A hotel with a rich history

Amsterdam American Hotel – Hampshire Eden has a rich history. In 1882, the first hotel guests stayed at this unique location on Leidseplein. The current building dates from 1902 and is a wonderful example of Jugenstil. Right at the centre of this national monument is Café Americain, the hotspot where (hotel) guests and Amsterdam residents enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Step outside the Amsterdam American Hotel - Hampshire Eden and you find yourself at the heart of cultural life in Amsterdam. On and around Leidseplein, there are numerous cafés and restaurants, clubs and theatres. The three most important museums in the city are also within walking distance: the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum.

Prime pieces are The Beanery by Edward Kienholz and works by Kazimir Malevitsj, Matisse, Het Bauhaus and De Stijl. Besides Rembrandt's Nightwatch, the Rijksmuseum also has masterpieces by Johannes Vermeer and Frans Hals.

See a show at the DeLaMar Theatre, the Stadsschouwburg or Theater Bellevue. During the summer from June to September, you can see free shows - cabaret, music and dance - in the Vondelpark Openluchttheater.

The famous Café and Bar Americain

The famous Café and Bar Americain

Café Americain
A phenomenon in Amsterdam and far beyond. Café Americain is a well known meeting place for writers, artists, performers and locals. In the beautiful art deco interior, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner. In fine weather, the spacious terrace is a beautifully sheltered spot.
Every Saturday, you can enjoy Afternoon Tea with sandwiches, scones, bonbons, biscuits and a pot of special tea. Every Sunday, there is a Jazz Brunch with live music, good food and a relaxed lazy Sunday feel.

Bar Americain
No hotel bar in Amsterdam has welcomed such an eclectic mix of international stars as Bar Americain. Many famous guests have ordered a Lemon Jack or Sunset Amore here. Because cocktails are a house speciality. Not surprisingly, the bar is a hot spot for cocktail loving Amsterdam. Shaken or stirred, it's your call.

“Great location, great staff, good value”

Had a 4night city break. This hotel is well placed. The rooms are a little small, the furniture a little large. The staff are helpful. The wifi is excellent, though the instructions were wrong - just ask reception for the password. Didn't use the cafe, too expensive and you're surrounded by other options. Really enjoyed my stay and would use this hotel again.

“Great in all aspects!”

Great location, new rooms, perfect size hotel, wonderful atmosphere. The entire staff (including trainees) is very professional and happy. Amsterdam is a touristic city, and it is nice to feel so welcomed in a hotel. I have visited Amsterdam before, staying in different properties. This is definitely my favorite place to stay! APP

“Great location, excellent hotel”

Great location - can walk to everything in central Amsterdam. Tram stop outside - as well as airport bus. Also well-located for canal trips etc. Room was a little basic - but did the job. Very helpful and pleasant staff.

“Expensive but central”

From the airport Jump on the 197 bus, it's €5 each, buy tickets before you board at the cabin at the bus stops or pay the driver, a hint make sure you go to the right bus stop as one goes to the city and one goes away from it, also get a ticket as inspectors get on the bus and 5 people had not bought tickets they had to pay €25 each!!!! Bus stops outside the hotel at Leidsekade, the hotel has small fountain at the front to look out for. The hotel is lovely, we where on the 5th floor, the lifts where very small so quite a trek up the beautiful staircases. Check-in was quick and easy, (don't forget city tax on check out, we paid €26 for 3 nights). The room was clean, modern and ok size, the bathroom was a good size and spotless, although one of our hand towels had lipstick marks on it! no view from the room, we looked out onto other windows. Free safe in room, free wifi and free use of desk tops to print boarding passes etc. hotel bar quite expensive. We did not pay for breakfast at the hotel, and went across the square to the Sports Cafe, it's small and a little crammed in but food was good and cheaper than hotel. There is plenty of other places nearby to get food. There is streets and streets of restaurants, and lots of choice. Other than getting the bus from the airport we walked everywhere, the hotel is very central. Advice: book museum tickets in advance, we pre booked Van Gogh and got the audio as well, enjoyed this and learnt a lot. Ann Frank was fully book for weeks in advance, and queue was hours long so gave that a miss. We got a boat tour from a one of the stops near the central station, headphones included for the audio information. Avoid buying drinks and food in Dam Square at €17 for 2 pints, very over priced. The hotel is lovely, quite expensive to stay at, but very central.
