On Amsterdam’s most beautiful avenue

Step out of Apollofirst - Hampshire Classic and you’re immediately on Amsterdam’s most beautiful avenue: Apollolaan. In whatever direction you walk in this chique area of Amsterdam you’ll come across great restaurants, lunch rooms, cafes, shops and museums. But of course you can also go to a specific destination. We’re delighted to help you with this:

Art and culture
Take the tram towards the city centre and step out at the Nationaal Monument on the Dam. Various places of interest and museums are within walking distance from here. Madame Tussauds is close by, as is Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam and De Nieuwe Kerk with its interesting exhibitions. If you walk on further, towards Westerkerk, you’ll arrive at the world-renowned Anne Frank Huis.

Theatre
Leidseplein is just 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel. A Valhalla for music and theatre. Choose from the varied programmes available at different theatre and music venues: DeLaMar Theater, Theater Bellevue, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, Paradiso and Melkweg. You can also visit the theatre around the corner, literally in this case: Apollofirst Theater also has a surprising programme of performances.

Children
There are a number of great attractions for the children along the way to central station. They can make interesting discoveries about science and technology in Science Center NEMO. The Scheepvaartmuseum is close to NEMO, where children can see and experience how the Netherlands is formed by the sea. They can also walk around the East India Company ship, De Amsterdam, berthed next to the museum.

Parking and forest
The city’s largest park, Vondelpark, is not far from the hotel. Free concerts and performances are given in Vondelpark Openluchttheater throughout the summer. Amsterdamse Bos (forest) is just a few kilometres drive from the hotel and in the summer months you can enjoy large-scale theatre events in Bos Theater.

“Just a few words about the Hotel Apollofirst ”

It is situated not far from the Museum square in a quiet place. Rooms are rather small but clean. Breakfasts are usual. The only problem I have met with is a theft. After cleaning the room my shampoo L'Occitane has been stolen. I can't get any reasonable explanation from the Receiption. Making a decision to stay in the Hotel be careful and attentive and keep your values in a safe or at least in the wardrobe which can be locked.

“Exellent Hotel”

In the south of the city, near to the museum and exhibition areas and within easy reach of the centre using public transport. A very pleasant hotel which does breakfast, but no dinner. This is not really a problem, as there is a shopping district just around the corner, with several restaurants offering a diversity of cuisines. The rooms are well furnished, if a tad bijou, and spotlessly clean - which you'd expect in Holland. Sleep quality was excellent - no noise at all. Free Wi-Fi is a touch variable on the top floor, but just about adequate. You can pay for more bandwidth if you want it. Friendly and helpful staff. Price was 390 Euros for 3 nights, with breakfast extra. Would visit again, and probably will again in January for my wife's 50th.

“Well priced hotel for the area, but a little old and tired”

I stayed in this hotel as it was close to an event I was attending at the Hilton Hotel. The Hilton is ridiculously expensive and I usually stay in the Bilderberg Garden Hotel, but unfortunately that was fully booked well in advance of my stay. This was a lot cheaper, but at well over £100 per night is not cheap. My flight was delayed by 3 hours so I missed my dinner appointment. Unfortunately this hotel does not seem to offer anything other than sandwiches. The staff at reception and in the bar were very friendly, but my goats cheese and salami sandwich on brown bread was actually a plain edam and salami on dried up white bread. Not very nice at all, but fortunately there were free olives and nuts which were much nicer. The bar only serves lager - no real beer at all, no cider, and in fact only one type of lager. No bottles of beer either so really worth a miss. The hotel room was well sized with a double bed and a single bed. The bathroom was well past it, there was a bath and a shower attachment but no shower curtain. There was not even a plug for the bathroom sink and it was really a bit shoddy. The room was quiet, but other guests unfortunately were not!. The TV had only a few UK channels free of charge - BBC1 and some other rubbish, but ITV was chargeable. There was free wifi provided but it rarely worked, and when it did, it was far too slow to even read email. There is a chargeable option available which is why the free one is so bad I guess. To sum it up - an OK hotel, nice friendly staff, but the lack of proper food, poor bar and tired rooms mean it only gets 3 stars from me. Nowhere near as good at the Bilderberg which is just across the road.

“Quirky but good”

The hotel is some way outside the main centre of the city but a couple minutes from a tram line that takes you straight to Central Station and stops at Museumplein, Leidesplein and Dam, all key stops or interchanges for the tourist. The staff are welcoming and friendly and the hotel has a somewhat quirky, boutique-esque look and feel, with all that comes a few oddities, the stairs are very steep for a hotel and the lift is very small, if you are traveling in a group expect to take turns, however I never found it to be too busy or anything. I did find in the early evening and the mornings there was a lot of internal noise within the hotel but perhaps by nature of the people who choose the location this all quietened down in time for a decent nights sleep. My room was a slightly odd shape but there was more than enough space for the beds, a small table, a sensibly sized and equipped bathroom and the wardrobe off in one corner with again a sensibly sized room safe to store your valuables. If you are here during the warmer months you may also find, as I did, you get a small balcony which is a nice bonus. Inside the room all is functional and fits the style of the place. Everything worked. I was primarily here for work and the couple of non-work days I wanted to cram all I could in and consequently never took breakfast in the hotel as it wasn't included in my room anyway so can't comment on the food. Overall this isn't a superstar hotel but it is comfortable and convenient for those who want a relaxed stay. I would have no problems staying here again.

“Nice hotel in a Quiet Area”

Very nice small hotel in a quiet neighbourhood. The staff is amazing always helpful and smiling. The hotel is not really in the Downtown but it's not far from it and on the other hand you get some piece during a night :-) You can also rent a bike from the hotel (that's actually a thing you should do in Amsterdam) and it takes about 15 minutes to the center. The only unpleasant thing is that the rooms are not really isolated so you'll hear what's going on in the hallway. Other than that we've been satisfied as always before.
