Culture
The history of Kasteelruïne van Valkenburg goes back to the eleventh century. You can visit the former quarters of knights such as Walram de Rosse and Gosewijn and view the knight’s hall, weapon room and underground escape routes. The escape routes eventually lead to the Fluweelengrot. Together with a guide you can take a cave trip past wall paintings, inscriptions and a chapel dating from the French period (18th Century). Another cave in the area is Gemeentegrot. Tours are given here too. The fantastic Openluchttheater Valkenburg offers an exciting annual summer programme of music, theatre and dance.
Children
At the Drielandenpunt in Vaals you’re in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany simultaneously. The playground and maze are extra attractions for the children. At AGoGo Valkenburg the kids can zoom 375 metres down the toboggan run.
Golf
There are various beautiful golf courses in the area of the hotel, such as Golf & Countryclub Hoenshuis, Zuid Limburgse Golf & Countryclub Wittem and Het Rijk van Margraten.
Events
Valkenburg has a rich cycling history. The World Cycling Championships has been held five times on the roads in Valkenburg and surroundings, the last time in 2012. Other cycling competitions also frequently race up the renowned Cauberg, such as the annual Amstel Gold Race.
Christmas
Valkenburg Christmas markets are legendary. In the dark days before Christmas, Valkenburg is transformed into an attractive Christmas town. Enjoy the countless lights, Christmas trees, the culinary Route d’Amuse walk and the underground Christmas markets in Fluweelengrot and Gemeentegrot.
Restaurant Voncken
Visitors from across the country praise the kitchen of this hospitable restaurant. Simply because here they know what good cooking is here. Just how good can be seen from the guests who come here. Celebrity chefs Margo Reuten from Da Vinci and Erik van Loo from Parkheuvel are spotted here regularly. The kitchen is the domain of Head Chef Hans Pijls, who has more than 40 years’ cooking experience. He cooks pure food and with a feeling for French cooking history. This results in delicious, epicurean dishes that also match the season perfectly. What about fried goose liver with black pudding and caramelised apple, followed by partridge with sauerkraut? And of course with a delicious and fitting wine from the extensive wine menu, such as Elzasser Pinot Gris.
