The three-star hotel Hampshire - ArcHotel Zeeland “Crown of Renesse” is within walking distance of the centre of Renesse. An ideal hotel for a long weekend of walking and cycling in Schouwen-Duivenland. This most northerly peninsula of Zeeland has beautiful beaches and special nature reserves, such as the varied area Vroongronden and Kop van Schouwen with Zeeland’s largest forest.
At Hampshire – ArcHotel Zeeland “Kroon op Renesse” there are no fewer than 27 free walking guides ready for you to pick up. Many of these routes take you through dunes and forests. During a walk along the coast, with a little bit of luck you’ll see seals relaxing on a sandbank. If you’re a member of Natuurmonumenten you can also go and have a look at the many protected nature reserves in the area.
Here on the coast, the Zeeland coast... it’s perfect for everyone who loves the beach. No village in Zeeland is situated more than 17 kilometres away from the sea or a former estuary. But the province has more to offer that just beautiful wide beaches: namely, beautiful nature reserves, museums and great attractions for children. A few tips:
Culture and nature
The Watersnoodmuseum at Ouwerkerk presents extensive information about what happened exactly during the big flooding of Zeeland, West Brabant and the Zuid-Hollandse islands in 1953. Museumhaven Zeeland is a museum on two locations at Zierikzee. At the Oude Haven outdoor location there’s a collection of historic ships. The second location is Stads- en Commerciewerf at Vissersdijk, where ships are being restored. At Brusea, Monumentale Visserswoning and Visserijmuseum in Bruinisse you’ll learn everything about the life of the Zeeland mussel: from the freedom in the sea to its end in the mussel pan. In Utropia tropical bird and nursery garden in Middelburg, there are numerous extraordinary birds flying free.
Children
The best water park in the Netherlands is without doubt Delta Park Neeltje Jans. Here you can whiz along the rapids with the family, watch a seal show and brave a hurricane. What’s life like as a pirate? The children can experience this in Het Arsenaal in Vlissingen, the largest pirate theme park in the Netherlands.
Golf
Close to Renesse, there are a number of beautiful golf courses with wonderful water features and fantastic views across the polders of Zeeland. These include De Goese Golf complex, Golfclub Grevenlingenhout in Bruinesse and Golfbaan Catharineburg in Melissant.
Beach
At Renesse there are great beaches with fantastic water sports possibilities, such as in Kijkduin, Watergat, ’t Klokje and Wilhelminahoeve. Ideal family seaside resorts are Burgh-Haamstede and Westenschouwen, where there’s also lots to do when the weather’s not so great.
Brasserie Arc en Blue
Brasserie Arc en Blue’s kitchen prepares Zeeland traditions with a Mediterranean twist. Of course there is typical Zeeland seasonal produce on the menu, such as mussels and the Oosterschelde lobster. But also tender grilled entrecôte, confit of tame duck and grilled dorado with creamy Zeeland mustard sauce and Dutch shrimps. Head Chef Raymond Broekhuis and hostess Anne Satter ensure that you feel at home the whole day here, from lunch and dinner to a drink on the terrace or in the bar. To make it even more cosy, when the weather’s cold and bleak, they light the open fire.
