Hampshire City Hotel – Groningen is the ideal base for a weekend exploring Groningen and its surroundings. It is located close to the central station, so easily accessible with all the city's hotspots nearby. You can hire a bicycle at the hotel and explore the city. Cycle through the centre with its historic warehouses, courtyards and buildings, past the Martini Tower towards the Grote Markt and see Groningen at its best.
The Groninger Museum is an absolute must. The museum has a wonderful collection of its own and also hosts special touring exhibitions. The building is an artwork in itself. It was designed by several well-known architects, including Allessandro Mendini.
There is also lots to see outside the city. You could go to Pieterburen, for example, to visit the seal nursery, or spend an afternoon walking on the tidal marshes. Bommel and Jan, Jans en de kinderen The Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum is not only a wonderful building to look at, it also has an interesting collection about the history of shipping in the northern provinces of the Netherlands. At the Groninger Museum, the Museum Shop and Mendini Restaurant are worth a visit in their own right.
The city has a lot of wonderful architecture. The central station or Hoofdstation, for example, was designed by Isaac Gosschalk in 1896 In the centre, the Goudkantoor, a renaissance building dating from 1635, and the many historic warehouses on the Noorderhaven are also worth a visit. Examples of modern architecture in the city include the famous Gasunie building and the urinal by Rem Koolhaas.
Not far from the city is the village of Pieterburen. This is home to the world famous seal nursery founded by Lenie 't Hart who takes care of ill seals. The visitor centre has an exhibition and a film. And if you're in Pieterburen anyway, why not take the family walking on the tidal marshes?
Groningen is surrounded by and connected to water. Take a boat tour and experience the city from another angle.
