Places of interest
Kasteel Bentheim in the centre of Bad Bentheim is open to the public all year. You can take a guided tour through the impressive castle complex and discover everything about the almost thousand year history of the castle. Freilichtbühne Bad Bentheim, Bad Bentheim’s unique open air theatre on rocks, has staged theatre performances since 1925, from musicals and fairy tales to operas and operettas. In Sandstein Museum Bad Bentheim you’ll learn everything about Bentheimer sandstone, the basic material used to construct buildings such as Kasteel Bentheim. And the Bad Bentheim Christmas market has to be mentioned. This is organised annually in the first weekend in December and is a good reason to visit the fortress town.
Walking and cycling
A huge walking network of no fewer than 2,400 kilometres awaits you in Münsterland. The routes run through parkland, over ancient lanes, through hilly landscapes and past castles and fortresses. For cyclists there are ten signposted cycle routes, all starting in Bad Bentheim and varying from 20 to 50 kilometres. The cycle paths take you along the most beautiful places from Graafschap Bentheim to Münsterland. The “Queen of cycle routes” is the 100 Castles route, which totals 2,000 kilometres past a hundred castles in Münsterland.
Be a knight or maiden: that’s possible in Kasteel Bentheim. On special afternoons, the children make knight’s helmets and pointed hats and test their strength in a real knight’s tournament. Not far from Bad Bentheim, there’s Dierenpark Nordhorn, home to more than a thousand large and small animals. Figurehead of the zoo is a rare bison from North America.
In Hampshire Hotel – Bad Bentheim’s bistro-restaurant you can enjoy a delicious lunch from 12:00 noon and have dinner in the evening. And because children are more than welcome here, you can visit with the entire family. You may even suddenly find a magician at your table who’ll amuse the children with magic tricks. This bistro-restaurant’s great service and excellent kitchen will certainly surprise you. Only seasonal dishes are found on the menu. Worth a special mention is the particularly tender Wagyu meat that’s served here, the best beef in the world.
