The hospitable Hampshire Hotel - Bieze is surrounded by the beautiful Drenthe countryside and special places of interest. The Hunebedcentrum in Borger is just a stone’s throw away, a museum that’s well worth a visit. It explains precisely who erected the dolmens everywhere in Drenthe and why. Other highlights in the area of the hotel include the glass-blowing studio and large sheep-fold with flock of sheep in Exloo village. Kabouterland in Exloo is a charming attraction for families.
Drenthe is the destination for peace, space and a varied landscape with many walking and cycling routes. Well-known are the Hunebedwandeling (Dolmen walk), Hondsrugwandeling (Hondsrug walk), Boerderijenfietsroute (Farm cycling route) and the Rondje Borger en Omgeving (Around Borger and surroundings. After an active day in the fresh air, you can recover in the cosy bar/lounge of Hampshire Hotel - Bieze or enjoy dinner in Bieze’s Restaurant. This stylish restaurant offers a huge selection of culinary dishes à la carte, together with the most delicious wines in your glass.
The area surrounding Hampshire Hotel - Bieze can be summed up in one word: beautiful. Immediately around the hotel there are five forestries and numerous cycling and walking routes. Should you prefer to check out the culture or do something fun with the children, here are a few tips:
Museums
In Borger you shouldn’t leave out a visit to the Hunebedcentrum (Dolmen Centre). This museum explains the story of the dolmen builders: who they were and why they constructed the dolmens. The largest dolmen in the Netherlands is located close to the museum. In Assen you can visit the Drents Museum for information about pre-historic times and interesting exhibitions. You’d probably not quickly make a link between Vincent van Gogh and Drenthe. But there is one. In the Van Gogh Huis in Nieuw Amsterdam you can see how Vincent lived and worked during his “Drentse periode” (1883).
Children
The lovely zoo Dierenpark Emmen is a must see. Speelstad Oranje, in the village Oranje in Drenthe is the Mecca of play: it has a big wheel, roller coaster, bumper cars and giant slides. No driving licence? It doesn’t matter in Verkeerspark Assen, where all children can “just” drive a car. You can see gnomes, dwarves and trolls in the charming attraction park, Kabouterland in Exloo.
Golf
Just a few kilometres from the hotel you’ll find the 18-hole golf course from Country Golf Ees. This certainly isn’t the only golf course in the area: in a 30-kilometre radius there are no fewer than five! The Golfbaan de Semslanden in Gasseternijveen is a great course.
Bieze's Restaurant
This stylish restaurant serves the most fantastic, culinary innovations. Do you fancy Drents “hoogveen” lamb fillet, tame duck or a trio of veal? And for dessert, marinated rhubarb with a strawberry soup, vanilla mascarpone and pistachio crumble? And by no means unimportant: the extensive wine menu. The more than fifty, mainly French wines offer a true adventure for the wine lover. Our waiters will be pleased to inform you about wine-food combinations.
Grand Café
You’ll feel comfortable in the Grand Café: you can order thirteen different wines by the glass here, together with delicious appetizers. And you have a beautiful view of the Borger village centre. Earlier in the day, you can come here to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee or tea with cake. In the evening, you can just stay put and order bistro dishes from the bistro menu.
