Hotel in the historic heart of Antwerp

All 37 rooms at Hotel O – Kathedral have been designed by one of the best-known architects in Antwerp: Jo Peeters. The result is a unique, contemporary look with special colours and details. The hotel is in an ideal location for a weekend in Antwerp: on Handschoenmarkt in the heart of the historic centre. It is also directly opposite the majestic Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, where old art treasures can be seen.

There are various places of interest, great shopping streets, cosy cafés and hip restaurants all within walking distance of Hampshire Hotel O – Kathedral. The well-known Grote Markt is practically around the corner. After a day of walking, shopping and visiting museums, it’s great to come home to your modern hotel room, provided as standard with free Wi-Fi, flat screen TV and a queen-sized bed with down duvets and luxurious bedding. And then there’s the trendy BAR O, where you can enjoy drinks at the end of the day.

Discover the history of Antwerp

Many interesting places of interest and bustling areas in the historic city centre of Antwerp, are around the corner or opposite Hampshire Hotel O - Kathedral. These include Grote Markt, the 16th Century Antwerp town hall and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal. And there are also many beautiful museums, and great things to do with the children. A few tips:

ModeMuseum, or MoMu, is located (how fitting) in the heart of Antwerp’s shopping district. This dynamic museum has a collection of more than 25,000 items of clothing, shoes and accessories. Changing and themed exhibitions are composed here regularly. What story does a photograph tell with its images? You’ll learn about this in FotoMuseum Provincie Antwerpen, or FoMu. MAS | Museum aan de Stroom is located in an impressive building in the old port of Antwerp. With permanent and changing exhibitions, this museum tells the story of the city, the river, the port and the world. Famous baroque painter Rubens purchased a building in 1610 which he converted entirely into a home. This building is now a museum, Rubenshuis, that tells the story of his life and work.

One of Europe’s oldest zoos is located in the heart of the city: Antwerpen Zoo. A beautiful, historic place where around five thousand animals live and where there’s lots to see and experience. If the weather turns, you can let the children blow off steam in the indoor playground Pirateneiland. This indoor playground has a pirate ship, climbing and clambering places, slides and games. Aquatopia is also indoors, and is a top attraction with seven wonder water worlds: rain forest, swamp, mangrove, coral reefs, ocean, lab and diving boat. Ecohuis is to the east of Antwerp. In this interactive house you can learn with the whole family how to live in the most environmentally-friendly way possible. You can really take advantage of this.

Special places
Het Steen is a beautiful castle built around 1200. The monument is on the Schelde and is the oldest building in Antwerp. Begijnhof is certainly worth a visit, an oasis of peace in the city with historic small houses, the Sint-Catharinakerkje and a beautiful enclosed garden. The streets around Antwerp central station together form the diamond district, the heart of Antwerp’s diamond industry. You can find precious stones, gold and silver here.

“For those who like to stay in the centre of the entertainment area”

Small from the outside but the staff were very polite and helpful. My room was well equipped clean and tidy. Very dark room and you need to like the idea of having a bath tube almost in the middle of your room. And yes, you have the cathedral view, but that's it. It's in the middle of the entertainment area and hence lots of noise until early hours. For me not a problem, but if you sleep light you could have a problem. There must be a reason the hotel provides ear plugs. Great position for all the amenities in the centre of Antwerp. Close to the metro (4 stops away from Central Station)

“The Staff Made the Difference”

Wonderful location in the middle of the old town just opposite the Cathedral of Our Lady. From our first contact with the staff, they made all the difference. So, I am upgrading my rating from average to very good. The rooms are dark and small/quirky shapes, but very clean with comfortable beds and a good breakfast included. Every member of staff was helpful, accommodating, and one evening suggested an excellent restaurant. There is a cosy bar and here the staff suggested beers to try and offered nibbles. A very welcoming staff can make all the difference! Next door is an excellent chocolate shop with "tea room".

“Small and cozy hotel in a lovely location”

The hotel is quite small but has everything you need. We stayed in a Kathedral room with a lovely view over the plaza and Our Lady Cathedral. When we first checked in we were assigned to a room that didn't lived up to our expectations, the room was dark, cold and with a small window. However the front office staff was very helpful and offered us to swap room. The new room was bright, spacious and with large windows facing the plaza and the cathedral. The hotel offered complimentary Wi-Fi which sometimes didn't work out quite well, also you need to reconnect and enter user and password everything you're phone/computer/tablet were put in energy saving mode. The breakfast was nothing out of the ordinary, a continental breakfast buffet containing coffee/tea, juice, water, bread, pasteries and a selection of cheeses and cold cuts. We had a lovely stay and do recommend the hotel for travelers who doesn't want to spend a lot of time at the hotel, all you could ask for is just outside your door, so explore the city and enjoy your stay in Antwerp!

“Comfortable location, broken nights”

Hotel has a unique location in the heart of Antwerp facing the Cathedral. We stayed in one of the square rooms on the first floor in the front. The view on the athedral was stunning and the black/white contrast of the room was ok, not too dark. The layout of the room was functional. The beds were a bit worn out, not meeting my expectations from hotel beds. As you are in the centre of the city, we were woken up quite a number of times by loud talking people on the street during the night (we didn't use the earplugs provided by the hotel). There is little noise from other hotel guests as there are only a few rooms per floor.

“Baileys coffee and cake”

Went for light snacks and coffee. The baileys coffee is fantastic and topped it off with apple tart. Very good price, lovely staff. Nice surroundings. Right next to the infamous cathedral so abit of a hotshot for tourists. On your way to the WC the hotel next door has fantastic wall art of speakers and stereos, looked amazing!
