This is an absolute top location in Amsterdam: immediately on Prinsengracht and not far from the Amstel. The hotel couldn’t be better or more central. Hampshire Hotel – Prinsengracht is located in two 17th Century canal buildings and has 34 comfortable rooms. All rooms have views across the canal or the beautiful enclosed garden. Although the hotel is in the middle of the old centre, you’ll find an oasis of peace here.
From Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht you can go literally in any direction and you’re guaranteed to come across a museum, theatre or other cultural hotspot. If you’re heading towards the Amstel, you can choose from Hermitage Amsterdam and Koninklijk Theater Carré. Towards Muntplein, you’ll come across Foam photography museum. And towards Leidseplein you’ll come across the DeLaMar Theater, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, pop temple Paradiso and pop stage Melkweg.
Amsterdam’s canal district has been on Unesco’s World Heritage List since August 2010. An international recognition of this part of the historic inner city’s special character, and Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht is right in the middle! Many special attractions and museums are close to this unique place and you can already purchase entrance tickets to many of these in the hotel. A few tips in the area:
Museums
At Museumplein you’ll find three top locations together: Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Van Gogh Museum. All three have a fantastic collection of world-famous works of art. In the other direction towards the Dam, you can visit De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam, famous for its much-discussed exhibitions. H.M. the Queen’s official reception palace is also on the Dam: Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam. Not far from here, towards Jordaan, there’s Anne Frank Huis, where Anne Frank stayed in hiding for more than two years during the Second World War. Hermitage Amsterdam has been in the former Amstelhof on the Amstel since 2009, an annex of the famous Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, On Stadhouderskade you’ll find the Heineken Experience, a museum “new style” about the world famous beer.
Children
You can visit The Amsterdam Dungeon for a creepy day out. Madame Tussauds is also great for slightly older children. It’s a place to “meet” their heroes and celebrities. For young scientists and researchers, Science Center Nemo is highly-recommended. Be a pirate on a East India Company ship? That’s possible at Het Scheepvaartmuseum, where the replica of the ship De Amsterdam is berthed. Towards the east of the city there’s the Tropenmuseum. In this museum they’re expert in getting the children interested in the culture of other nations. Check the programme for special activities.
Theatre and music
There’s more than enough to choose from in the area. For example visit a show in the beautiful Koninklijk Theater Carré. At Leidseplein there are no fewer than three theatres with attractive programmes: Stadschouwburg Amsterdam, DeLaMar Theater and Theater Bellevue. For pop concerts there’s the atmospheric pop temple Paradiso and a little further on is Melkweg, where many a celebrity has stood on the stage.
Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht doesn’t have it’s own restaurant, but does have a bar and a space in which you can enjoy an extensive breakfast every morning. When the weather’s fine, you can also enjoy breakfast outside on the terrace in the beautiful inner garden. Or enjoy drinks there later in the day. Drinks and dishes from our snack menu, such as various toasted sandwiches, can be ordered at the bar throughout the day.
