Cosy hotel close to the big theatres

Hampshire Hotel - Theatre District Amsterdam is the ideal place for culture vultures. The hotel is located right in the centre, just behind Leidseplein and close to the city’s large theatres: DeLaMar Theater and Stadsschouwburg. Famous music venues Paradiso and Melkweg are also around the corner. Various internationally-renowned museums are just a few minutes walk away, such as Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum.

In addition to all the art and culture, there are many other things to do around Hampshire Hotel - Theatre District Amsterdam. You can be in the Vondelpark in no time where you can enjoy a relaxing walk, find an outdoor café or picnic on the grass. Or step on a tour boat for a trip on the canals and afterwards go shopping in the famous P.C. Hooftstraat, the street full of shops from well-known luxury brands.

From Vondelpark to Leidseplein

The range of art and culture on offer in the immediate vicinity of Hampshire Hotel - Theatre District Amsterdam is tremendous. Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Rijksmuseum are all within walking distance. To help you relax, you can take a nice walk through Vondelpark or take in an outdoor café on Leidseplein. Tips for other great things in the area:

As well as the large, internationally-renowned museums, the area houses many interesting smaller museums. A good example is Museum Van Loon, located in a 17th Century building on Keizersgracht. This is home to the art collection from the Willem van Loon family, one of the founders of the East India Company. Tassenmuseum Hendrikje is in a monumental building on Herengracht, dating from 1664. As the largest bag museum in the world, it brings 500 years of bag history to life. The Bijbels Museum on Herengracht is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. The enormous collection comprises not only biblical but also Jewish and Egyptian religious objects. In 1805, Mrs Willet-Holthuysen left her 17th Century canal house to the city of Amsterdam, including furniture and art collection. The house is now a museum: Museum Willet-Holthuysen.

Foam Fotografiemuseum on Keizersgracht has large exhibitions featuring the work of famous photographers, but also smaller expositions by young talented professionals and amateurs.

Various theatres are within walking distance of the hotel. DeLaMar Theater has international performances, theatre, cabaret, musicals and family theatre on the programme. Stadschouwburg on Leidseplein offers evening theatre performances including those by Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

Jeugdtheater De Krakeling has beautiful performances for children of various ages throughout the year. Anne Frank Huis is suitable for children from 10 years. For climbing, gliding, football and running, children up to 13 can enjoy the indoor play park, TunFun.

The park in Amsterdam is of course Vondelpark, where you can enjoy a picnic on the grass together with all the locals. There are great, free performances in Vondelpark Openluchttheater in the summer.

Public transport
The Location offers an easy access to the public transportation. The airport bus 197 stops right at the doorstep of the hotel, which makes it easy to make your way from Schiphol for about €5,-.

“Amsterdam Visit”

From the 14 April to 18 April. We paid Amsterdam a Visit. Because we have a plan to visit all Capitols in Europe. Last year it was Rome. We stayed at Hampshire Hotel in Theatre District. Staying there meant all the major things Amsterdam has to offer is in close vicinity. First the Hotel. Nice clean rooms and good service. Rooms okay in size, for us they are meant for sleeping. The bed was nice and had no trouble at all sleeping. Good size bathroom with a hairdryer.Elevator is also there. breakfast is okay. The same every day. But it makes you full. FREE coffee and tea together with hot chocolate is very nice. The location of this Hotel is simply perfect. Everything is so close. 7- 10 min walks ( if you are up to 48 years as i am) to ReijksMuseum where Van gogh and 2 other museums are in a huge park where you can sit and drink and eat. If the budget is not that big and want to enjoy the park. There is a Supermarket at the end of the park Next to the end of their Architect and Design Museum ( think it is called) on a Grey building with has a grass slope where you can sit. In the bottom of that, you can buy sandwich beer softdrinks and so on. On the other side of the Hotel is one of their Chanel where you can take a tour on one of their many boats. Walking down the Chanel around 5 min to Hard Rock Cafe. Which is situated in a square with many other places to sit and drink. Lovely at nighttime. There is a both, where they are selling tickets to the boat ride. In this company you can buy a night trip with dinner. We did that, a little costly 77 euro per person. But it last around 2,5 hours and there is a small appetizer and then a 4 meal course, with vine ad libitum. Very good experience. Was so nice. 5 min walk from the Hotel. Leidzeplatz is there a huge area where you can sit and eat drink have fun. The main train station is 4,9 km away. Giving tourist good value for money, if they want to walk to the inner city, since the shopping roads start from Leidzeplatz all the way to central staion. Was a absolutely joy to be there.

“General observations”

I have to say that although this hotel is well situated its - well.. in need of a refreshment! the rooms are small - the lift is almost impossible to navigate with large suitcases - 1-1. there is no luggage rack in the room, no bath, no chair! But it was quiet and comfortable although you could only walk to the side of the bed from one side!! Breakfast is basic (very basic) and if everyone turn up at the same time - well there is no room at all. Not sure its value for money

“Good location, basic hotel.”

The Hampshire hotel is a good base to explore Amsterdam. Short walk to the old town and various other districts. The rooms themselves were small and out dated, however they were clean (and how much time do you spend in the rooms anyway). The staff were helpful and the wifi was a good plus. We caught the 197 bus from and to the airport which was very convenient. Our tip would be get out in front of the Marriott hotel (and you can see Bellevue theatre). We missed the right stop and ended up at the depot and had to walk back.

“Great Location and Coffee”

We had a very small room with a tiny balcony (which we loved) which had a huge bathroom - 109. Although you think you have paid for your trip fully on line; you will pay city tax, with no benefits. (We paid city/tourist taxes in Germany and got free transit; public swimming, discounts ...) Seems that good old Amsterdam really has turned into a tourist money grab. The location is excellent, easy walking distance to main tourist areas - museums, buildings, Vondel park, Red Light District, canal trips, grocery store. The customer service at the front desk was hit and miss - most were less than welcoming/friendly. The exception is EDWARD - I think this is the right name, tall, lovely fellow; he has terrific customer service skills, knowledge of the area and a genuine interest in providing information and service in an efficient manner. Thank you Edward. The free coffee and tea were a nice perk. The area is quite noisy at all times of the day and night, we were at the front of the building. I had one elevator ride then opted to take the stairs. Good luck with the bed that caves in the middle. Nice black out curtains. The other curtain had a smear of something on it ... otherwise the room was clean with the exception of someone else's sequens on the bed and carpet. Don't get run over by the serious bikers.

“Short birthday break”

I booked last minute through with a fantastic rate. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a Receptionist who gave us all the necessary information about the area and how to get places. Once we got to our room, we found a birthday card & chocolates for my boyfriend. How thoughtful! The double room was basic but with everything we needed. We had air conditioning, a wardrobe, desk and the en-suite was suitable with fresh towels provided throughout our stay. The breakfast was nice and filling, with plenty of food available. We also took advantage of complimentary hot drinks facility in the bar area, where we could help ourselves 24/7 to tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc. I am returning to Amsterdam in July and would love to stay here again, however I have been unable to locate a way of booking! Overall an extremely pleasant stay, would recommend!
