If you like peace, space, comfort and a wonderful view, you are in the right place here in South Drenthe. Hampshire Hotel – Zuid Drenthe, situated in the natural surroundings of the Amsterdamsche Veld and not far from Emmen, has everything to make your weekend in Drenthe something special. This is largely to do with the excellent facilities of this super sustainable four-star hotel, such as a complete wellness centre and top restaurant.
Not only does Hampshire Hotel - Zuid Drenthe itself have lots to offer, so do the hotel's immediate surroundings. For example, you can go on fantastic walks and cycle tours in the nearby Bargerveen nature reserve. This area is part of Naturpark Bourtanger Moor, which to a large extent is situated in Germany. Golfers can play on the hotel's golf course: Green Meet*s Golf. This 9-hole golf course is situated on an embranchment of the Drentse Hondsrug, which makes the landscape slightly hilly and creates a challenging course.
Here in the south of Drenthe, close to the German border, it's all about the beautiful scenery with plenty of possibilities to go on fantastic walks and lovely bicycle rides. But you can also include a day of art and culture in a neighbouring town or do something fun with the children. A few tips:
Art and culture
What exactly is a 'hunebed' (chamber tomb) and why are there so many in Drenthe? Answers to these and other questions, about how people lived in ancient times, for example, can be found in the Hunebedcentrum in Borger. Delve into the history of peat moor in the Veenpark of Barger-Compascuum near Emmen. In this park, you can sail and drive through nostalgic villages and see real turf excavations. In the Drents Museum in Assen, you can see interesting exhibitions on archaeology, figurative art, art nouveau/art deco and the cultural history of Drenthe.
In Emmen Zoo, the animals are grouped according to the continent to which they belong. That turns a walk around this fantastic zoo into an exciting journey around the world. Kids' heroes such as Bumba, Mega Mindy and Kabouter Plop come to life in Plopsa Indoor Coevorden. The park with over twenty attractions such as Plops Speelboom, the Pirate rollercoaster, the Flying Bicycles and the K3 carrousel.
The hotel is on several lovely cycle routes, such as the Bruingoud route, the Runde route and the Pioniers route. Besides the normal cycle routes, there are also SmaakFietsRoutes. These are largely based on the cycle junctions of the ANWB, but (and this is why they are so enjoyable!), they sometimes deviate to discover special places where local products are grown, cultivated and produced. The routes also pass restaurants serving delicious local specialities.
The hotel has a complete wellness centre, including gym. Here you will find a Finnish sauna, hammam cabin, foot baths, shower with light therapy, beauty salon, various massages and a quiet room.
Not far from the hotel, the 9-hole golf course Green Meet*s Golf is situated. Here you can enjoy a game of golf itself as well as the beautiful surroundings.
Restaurant Green Meet*s
The kitchen of restaurant Green Meet*s has a European orientation with the occasional Asian foray. Chef Emile prefers to use organic produce and regional products, like the many types of bean for which the north of the Netherlands was once famous. The fresh herbs which give your meal that extra flavour are all grown in the chef's own herb garden. All these lovely fresh products result in fantastic dishes on the menu. And if you wish, the dishes are accompanied by a gorgeous wine, such as a lovely organic wine from France which is certainly worth trying. The restaurant is also the place where you can enjoy the most important meal of the day: breakfast.
