Imposing 17th Century castle close to Harderwijk

Step back in time in this imposing, 17th Century castle in a beautiful location in Hierden, close to Harderwijk. You’ll find an oasis of calm here in the green heart of the Veluwe. Kasteel de Essenburgh – Hampshire Classic has forty rooms, including several castle rooms, with views across the rustic, English landscape garden and pond. If you’re lucky you’ll even spot deer from your room. 

Kasteel de Essenburgh – Hampshire Classic is situated midway between Harderwijk and Apeldoorn. This offers various possibilities for fun trips with the entire family, such as the Dolfinarium in Harderwijk or Palace Het Loo and the Apenheul in Apeldoorn. But you can of course also make fantastic cycle trips and walks in the countryside. Around the hotel you’ll find forests and expansive heathland where you can enjoy a wonderful day out in the fresh air.

Art and culture
Hanseatic town Harderwijk is just 5 kilometres from the hotel and has fun places of interest. To make sure you don’t miss anything, make a guided or unguided tour through the historic city centre. The Harderwijk City Guides Guild organises a number of city walks, such as the churches and monastery route and the delicious culinary route. Apeldoorn is also not too far from the hotel. On the outskirts of this city, you’ll find Palace Het Loo: the more than three-hundred-year-old Royal Palace that’s open to the public. The richly-designed quarters give a beautiful image of three centuries of royal residence by the House of Orange. In addition to the permanent collection, you can see changing exhibitions and visit the baroque gardens and palace park.

Children
You dive into a magical underwater world in the Dolfinarium in Harderwijk. You can meet dolphins, walruses, sea lions, seals and other sea creatures. And the largest dolphin show in Europe is held here. You’ll make the children really happy with a trip to Walibi Holland. That is at least, if they like a bit of action. Because there are fantastic rides here in spectacular roller coasters, such as Speed of Sound. In the Apenheul in Apeldoorn you can watch lots of monkeys roaming free, either from a distance from very close quarters. And also in Apeldoorn there’s the nostalgic Family amusement park ‘Koningin Juliana Toren’ with more than sixty attractions.

Walking and cycling
In the hotel’s immediate vicinity there’s so much countryside for fantastic walking and cycling. We’d also recommend the slightly more distant Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve. In this marshland with reed beds, rough grassland and lakes in South Flevoland you can get acquainted with the Netherlands as it was a thousand years ago.

Home-made dishes such as the “castle muffin”

Vaulted cellar “De Oude Mheen”
The kitchen in the vaulted cellar’s restaurant uses only fresh and as far as possible, organic, produce. From chocolate “castle muffin” to sorbet, it’s all home-made. The restaurant can seat sixty guests who can enjoy an evening three-course dinner. You can also choose from the seasonal menu. If you are with a large group, you can discuss with the Head Chef about organising something different or composing a special menu. From a walking dinner to a barbecue: everything is possible.
In the breakfast room next to the restaurant you can enjoy an extensive breakfast buffet every morning from 8.00 a.m., including home-made bread, sugar bread, croissants and home-made raspberry jam. The castle’s vaulted cellar also houses the stylish hotel bar. The bar is open every evening and also has an outside patio with views across the country estate.
