Best City Boutique Hotel

If you want to relax for a weekend and also enjoy Amsterdam to the full, then a stay in the luxury The Toren - Hampshire Classic is highly-recommended. The hotel was proclaimed “Best City Boutique Hotel” during the 2012 Boutique Hotel Awards; a prize given for the unprecedented service that guests receive 24 hours a day: from a glass of champagne in the room to recommendations for good restaurants and places of interest in the area.

The Toren – Hampshire Classic is in an exceptionally good location. In a 17th Century canal building on Keizersgracht with Anne Frank Huis, Westerkerk, Jordaan and De 9 Straatjes around the corner. The Dam is also not far from the hotel. There are a number of interesting places of interest here: Nationaal Monument, De Nieuwe Kerk with its much-discussed exhibitions, and Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam.

On Keizersgracht with Jordaan around the corner

There is more than enough to see and do to fill an entire weekend in the immediate vicinity of The Toren - Hampshire Classic. The hotel is located on Keizersgracht, a stone’s throw from the convivial Jordaan, Wersterkerk and Westertoren, which features in many tear-jerking folksongs. Tips for great and interesting excursions in the area:

Museums
Anne Frank Huis is literally around the corner from the hotel. If you have never been in the Achterhuis, the place where Anne Frank wrote her diary during the Second World War, then this is the ultimate opportunity. Tassenmuseum Hendrikje on Herengracht is the largest bag museum in the world and has an impressive collection of more than four thousand bags, purses, cases and pouches.

Places of interest
Westerkerk with the world-famous Westertoren is very close to the hotel. You can go in all directions on the Dam for fascinating places of interest. There’s the Nationaal Monument where the Queen lays a wreath every four years on 4 May during the Nationale Dodenherdenking. Here too is De Nieuwe Kerk with its interesting exhibitions and Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam, the official reception palace of the Koninklijk Huis. You’ll find Felix Meritis on Keizersgracht. Apart from being a beautiful, historic building, you can join various lectures, debates, demonstrations and workshops here.

Shopping
De 9 Straatjes really shouldn’t be missed. In these nine small streets there are unique, beautiful shops and you can also enjoy delicious lunch and dinner here. Other great places for shopping in the area are Magna Plaza shopping centre and De Bijenkorf on the Dam.

Children
Towards Central Station on Oosterdok, you’ll find Science Center Nemo. This interactive museum is great for children who like science and who dare to conduct exciting experiments. In Madame Tussauds on the Dam, you can view celebrities from close quarters and even pose for a photograph with some of the stars.

Room service from a fantastic French Head Chef

The Toren – Hampshire Classic doesn’t have its own restaurant but does have extremely close connections with Christophe’ restaurant. The Head Chef of this renowned restaurant on Leliegracht, around the corner from the hotel, is Jean-Joël Bonsens. This Frenchman used to work in the kitchen of the French top restaurant, Les Templiers in Loiret, and worked for the world-famous Head Chef, Paul Bocuse in Lyon.
What’s special about this cooperation is that you don’t even need to leave the hotel to enjoy Jean-Joël’s cooking. You can place your order via the room service menu and have this served in your room. Should you prefer to dine in the stylish lounge, then that’s possible too. Or you can also book a table in Christophe’ Restaurant itself.

“Great Place”

Small rooms, but very cozy. Staff are excellent, always smiling and greeting you when you walk by. Currently staying for two nights in one room and 6 nights in another room due to last minute booking, which shows they are accommodating when possible! Free wifi, tv is 20 euro a day.

“Luxury meets comfort”

It was a cold, wet weekend in Amsterdam and with tours booked and sight seeing planned I wasn't much looking forward to traipsing around the damp streets of the city for two days. In fact I wanted romance and fun and a touch of decadence, but thankfully I had booked The Toren. Our weekend was one of celebration and my husband had explained this in advance when booking. We had the garden suite and as we battled through the driving rain to our outdoor private suite, past the gorgeous patio that we unfortunately never had the chance to use, we breathed a sigh of relief upon entering our room. A bottle of celebratory champagne awaited us, a beautiful personal letter from the hotel owners congratulating me and a room exuding such splendour that all thoughts of sight seeing in the rain were forgotten. We had a whirl pool bath, wonderful 'Rituals' bath products, a large comfortable bed, ample storage, two televisions and a dining corner overlooking the gardens. To be honest we would have been more than happy to stay in that room all weekend. The hotel is perfectly situated in the centre of town and a short walk from all the attractions and train station. The chic bar provides a huge choice of cocktails and fancy G&Ts and the staff were beyond helpful, warm and welcoming. Room service was quick and efficient and breakfast in bed the next day was ample enough to sustain any wet and weary sightseer for the rest of their journey. And as if those 48 hours of luxury were not enough, upon my return home I was greeted with a personal message from the hotel asking about my stay. This may be a family run hotel but it has the air of any prestigious five star establishment, without the hefty price or the indifferent air. Next time I go to Amsterdam I will ensure that I stay at The Toren...and I will pray for sunny skies so I can enjoy one of their amazing cocktails in their pretty garden.

“Best hotel the real meaning of a vacation ”

My husband and I were there for about 8days. It's was the best hotel I've been to. The room was amazing it felt really comfortable and relaxing. The service was amazing and very friendly. The staff are welling to help with anything as well as advise where to go from restaurants to museums. They have the best cheese burger I ordered it almost every day. And the hotels location was perfect for us almost everything was a walking distance.

“Superb service & great rooms! We'll never stay anywhere else in Amsterdam.”

Besides being an excellent, quite comfortable & beautiful hotel, with views of the canal, the staff was beyond amazing!! The airlines lost my husbands luggage with his winter clothes, coat & our cigarettes. Finally after 10 hours of flying and hours dealing with luggage issues, we headed off exhausted to the hotel. We arrived at the Toren around 7:00 am on a Sunday morning, way too early for regular check-in. We went to the front desk to let them know we had arrived and had reservations for that day. They offered to hold our luggage until the room was ready. We explained our situation, our experience at the airport and our worry the luggage wouldn’t arrive in time to catch the train to Paris on Tuesday at 1:00 pm. Immediately they took our paperwork for the luggage, showed us into the parlor and offered us refreshments. Very shortly, they had a room available for us, it wasn’t the one we had reserved but it was gorgeous, spacious and comfortable with a lovely view of the garden and we were just grateful to have a place to lie down. We were settling in when the front desk called, they had spoken to the airlines regarding our bag and were sending someone up to the room with food & cigarettes. After eating and napping, we went out to explore the city. We couldn’t go very far, it was the middle of winter, snow on the ground, John in only a t-shirt & me in a cast with a broken foot. The hotel is just blocks away from shopping (where John bought a jacket), the Anne Frank house, a canal boat dock and many other places of interest which was great since I couldn’t walk far in the cast. We had two wonderful days of sightseeing, the Rijks museum is spectacular! Tuesday morning as we were getting ready to go to the train station our luggage arrived at 11:00 am. We know it was because of the Toren staff working so diligently, calling day & night and using their connections to help us. Because of them we had a great time in Amsterdam and the location of the hotel afforded us easy access to the city’s treasures. When we go back to Amsterdam the Toren is the only place we’ll stay! We were there prior to 2015 but the trip advisor calendar wouldn’t let us choose our actual travel date.
