Bruges open air museum

The historic centre of Bruges is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you walk through the city, you imagine yourself in an open air museum. Because there is so much to see and do, you need to make choices. A few tips:

Groeningemuseum gives a rich and fascinating overview of six centuries of Flemish and Belgian art. Works exhibited include those by Jan van Eyck and Marcel Broodthaers. In the Middle Ages, Het Huis van Gruuthuske belonged to the Van Brugghe-van der Aa family. The family had a monopoly on the sale of “gruut”, a herb mix from which beer was made. Gruuthusemuseum is now located in the house and has an interesting collection of art and antiques. At chocolate museum Choco-Story on Sint-Janssstraat, you learn all about chocolate. This starts with the history of the basic material: the cocoa bean. Epicurean Bruges even has its own Frietmuseum. This museum is located in the Saalhalle, one of the oldest buildings in Bruges, and explains the birth and history of friet (chips). And you get to taste them at the end of the tour.

Places of interest
Het Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaard with whitewashed façades, tranquil abbey garden and Begijnhofmuseum, was established in 1245. The Sisters of the Order of St.-Benedictus reside there now. Warning: the access gate to the Begijnhof closes at 6:30 p.m. without fail. In Onthaalkerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, you can admire many works of art including Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child and the mausoleums of Karel de Stoute and Maria van Bourgondië.

De Toverplaneet is a beautiful, large indoor playground in a former vegetable warehouse, with playground equipment of some 10 metres high. Another fun indoor playground is Speeldorp Brugge, with bouncy castles, obstacle courses, ball pit and slides. Het Boudewijn Seapark has fun attractions such as a water slide, roller coaster and bumper cars. There are also live shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions taking the leading role.

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

When it’s time for afternoon drinks, you can start in the sociable hotel bar, Barazar. Because of course there’s nothing nicer than a fresh Stella or sparkling wine. The bar is open from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. There’s traditional beer, crystal clear Stella and Brugse Zot on tap, but the bar also has delicious cocktails and a wide range of quality wines and various spirits. You can sit on the patio in the enclosed garden when the weather’s fine with a delicious sparkling wine.

Great start to the day
In Flanders Hotel Brugge - Hampshire Classic, they know what a good breakfast is: something you’ll be pleased to get out of your comfy hotel bed for. There are freshly-pressed fruit juices, freshly-baked bread, tasty coffee and crispy bacon with scrambled eggs. Exactly that and much more is ready here every morning in the breakfast restaurant from 08:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and until 10:30 a.m. in the weekend. Enjoy the most important meal of the day with a view across the enclosed garden.

“A gem in the crown of Bruges !”

We stayed in this beautiful little hotel in the centre of Bruges in early May this year with some dear friends on a short trip to see Bruges. What an absolute delight this hotel is. Lovely and although typical for Bruges, it's location near to the two main squares is ideal as a central base for exploring what is a wonderful and historical town. The hotel itself is has parking at the rear, a rarity in Bruges if you are driving. It is clean and well maintained and has a homely and welcoming feel to it. When you check in you feel comfortable and at home even before you get to your room. The rooms are spacious and have all the facilities you might expect. Ours had a separate w/c to the bathroom and you had to use two doors before you could wash your hands afterwards. This was the only concern we had. Beds were very comfortable and although our room was at the front, the road noise was not too bad and did not disturb us. The breakfast was delightful and plentiful. Eat your heart out if you have a good appetite in the morning. Staff were very helpful, all English speaking and very polite. We are still embarrassed that we cannot speak other languages. Lazy of us we know. Location is close to the two mains squares where you can feast and enjoy a lively nightlife. The beers in Belgium have converted me, so varied and all delicious but beware of the strength of some. Thank you to all at Flanders Hotel, we would love to come back next time and probably will soon enough. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to explore the delights of Bruges.

“Lovely hotel in a great location”

My wife and I stayed here for a weekend break in May. The hotel is under 10 minutes walk from the centre attractions and in a great location for all places to visit or walk. Room was huge and we had quiet room overlooking the garden terrace. Bathroom was large and clean. Breakfast was basic but adequate but we don't worry about these things. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

“Clean, comfy, good location”

The B&B was pleasant, good location and the owners were friendly. The free breakfast was fantastic! Although we didn't realise that the check in time wasn't till 5pm. On a rainy day with 2 young jet lagged children this made our day a little tough but if you have a car or somewhere to leave luggage then this was a nice place to stay.

“Clean, good service and good location”

The hotel itself is good, within walking distance to the main attractions (10min walk to the main square) and inside the city gates of the old town. Has 20-25 parking spaces so easily convenient if you are driving. The rooms are OK, clean and spacious with all the amenities, the staff is very helpful and friendly. In general I would say good hotel to enjoy this beautiful city.
