Bruges open air museum

The historic centre of Bruges is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you walk through the city, you imagine yourself in an open air museum. Because there is so much to see and do, you need to make choices. A few tips:

Museum
Groeningemuseum gives a rich and fascinating overview of six centuries of Flemish and Belgian art. Works exhibited include those by Jan van Eyck and Marcel Broodthaers. In the Middle Ages, Het Huis van Gruuthuske belonged to the Van Brugghe-van der Aa family. The family had a monopoly on the sale of “gruut”, a herb mix from which beer was made. Gruuthusemuseum is now located in the house and has an interesting collection of art and antiques. At chocolate museum Choco-Story on Sint-Janssstraat, you learn all about chocolate. This starts with the history of the basic material: the cocoa bean. Epicurean Bruges even has its own Frietmuseum. This museum is located in the Saalhalle, one of the oldest buildings in Bruges, and explains the birth and history of friet (chips). And you get to taste them at the end of the tour.

Places of interest
Het Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaard with whitewashed façades, tranquil abbey garden and Begijnhofmuseum, was established in 1245. The Sisters of the Order of St.-Benedictus reside there now. Warning: the access gate to the Begijnhof closes at 6:30 p.m. without fail. In Onthaalkerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, you can admire many works of art including Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child and the mausoleums of Karel de Stoute and Maria van Bourgondië.

Children
De Toverplaneet is a beautiful, large indoor playground in a former vegetable warehouse, with playground equipment of some 10 metres high. Another fun indoor playground is Speeldorp Brugge, with bouncy castles, obstacle courses, ball pit and slides. Het Boudewijn Seapark has fun attractions such as a water slide, roller coaster and bumper cars. There are also live shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions taking the leading role.

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Barazar
When it’s time for afternoon drinks, you can start in the sociable hotel bar, Barazar. Because of course there’s nothing nicer than a fresh Stella or sparkling wine. The bar is open from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. There’s traditional beer, crystal clear Stella and Brugse Zot on tap, but the bar also has delicious cocktails and a wide range of quality wines and various spirits. You can sit on the patio in the enclosed garden when the weather’s fine with a delicious sparkling wine.

Great start to the day
In Flanders Hotel Brugge - Hampshire Classic, they know what a good breakfast is: something you’ll be pleased to get out of your comfy hotel bed for. There are freshly-pressed fruit juices, freshly-baked bread, tasty coffee and crispy bacon with scrambled eggs. Exactly that and much more is ready here every morning in the breakfast restaurant from 08:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and until 10:30 a.m. in the weekend. Enjoy the most important meal of the day with a view across the enclosed garden.

“Liked some, a few grumbles”

We stayed here for two nights as the Novotel was full. Really enjoyed the indoor pool (smallish but we always had it to ourselves) and the excellent value happy hour at the hotel bar. Breakfast ok but have enjoyed better choice and quality at other Hampshire hotels (orange cordial!!!) and having to pay full price for our 4 year old daughter because the breakfast + room rate only covers two people a bit much. Also had to upgrade room and pay for an extra bed which made the extra breakfast extra cost even more unpalatable. We didn't have a bath and the 'trend' towards flooded bathroom floors (I'm sure the blurb would describe this as a wet room) ridiculous- who wants to wade through slippy pools of water to use the loo? Location fantastic for centre and local bars/ supermarkets / restaurants Would stay again as the staff are lovely and rooms clean but only if the Novotel not available and we would probably breakfast elsewhere

“Bike Tour Stop”

4 of us stopped here or one night while on a bike tour of Belgium. The family room was spacious and comfortable for 4 people. The staff were helpful and were more than willing to help. Great location in Bruges within walking distance of the centre.

“Cannot fault a thing!”

We stayed at this hotel in mid August for 3 nights as part of a self-drive holiday. We cannot fault anything about the place - the service was excellent, the room was excellent and the facilities were excellent...! We thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet of the small, indoor pool and had a terrific time in the bar. It is in a superb location to get to all the sights in Bruges and would highly recommend this hotel.

“A lovely hotel in a beautiful city!”

Booked this hotel to be able to visit the Flanders Battlefields. This is a gorgeous hotel in the old part of the city. Had a lovely room on the second floor, the only thing missing was a celing fan, as it was very warm during our visit! (Middle of the summer.) Hotel was central to the town, a five to ten minute walk to all the town attractions. Lots of Cafes and bars nearby. Good service every where from every one at the hotel and in the city. Good continental breakfast and coffee in the mornings, The only thing to watch out for are the cyclists, every one rides a bike.

“2 rainy days in Bruges”

Altough it rained 2 days, we had a very good time in the bar of the hotel. Our room was nice and cosy and the beds were comfortabel. Very kind and friendly personnel! We will return when the weather is better.
