Bruges open air museum

The historic centre of Bruges is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you walk through the city, you imagine yourself in an open air museum. Because there is so much to see and do, you need to make choices. A few tips:

Museum
Groeningemuseum gives a rich and fascinating overview of six centuries of Flemish and Belgian art. Works exhibited include those by Jan van Eyck and Marcel Broodthaers. In the Middle Ages, Het Huis van Gruuthuske belonged to the Van Brugghe-van der Aa family. The family had a monopoly on the sale of “gruut”, a herb mix from which beer was made. Gruuthusemuseum is now located in the house and has an interesting collection of art and antiques. At chocolate museum Choco-Story on Sint-Janssstraat, you learn all about chocolate. This starts with the history of the basic material: the cocoa bean. Epicurean Bruges even has its own Frietmuseum. This museum is located in the Saalhalle, one of the oldest buildings in Bruges, and explains the birth and history of friet (chips). And you get to taste them at the end of the tour.

Places of interest
Het Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaard with whitewashed façades, tranquil abbey garden and Begijnhofmuseum, was established in 1245. The Sisters of the Order of St.-Benedictus reside there now. Warning: the access gate to the Begijnhof closes at 6:30 p.m. without fail. In Onthaalkerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, you can admire many works of art including Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child and the mausoleums of Karel de Stoute and Maria van Bourgondië.

Children
De Toverplaneet is a beautiful, large indoor playground in a former vegetable warehouse, with playground equipment of some 10 metres high. Another fun indoor playground is Speeldorp Brugge, with bouncy castles, obstacle courses, ball pit and slides. Het Boudewijn Seapark has fun attractions such as a water slide, roller coaster and bumper cars. There are also live shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions taking the leading role.

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Barazar
When it’s time for afternoon drinks, you can start in the sociable hotel bar, Barazar. Because of course there’s nothing nicer than a fresh Stella or sparkling wine. The bar is open from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. There’s traditional beer, crystal clear Stella and Brugse Zot on tap, but the bar also has delicious cocktails and a wide range of quality wines and various spirits. You can sit on the patio in the enclosed garden when the weather’s fine with a delicious sparkling wine.

Great start to the day
In Flanders Hotel Brugge - Hampshire Classic, they know what a good breakfast is: something you’ll be pleased to get out of your comfy hotel bed for. There are freshly-pressed fruit juices, freshly-baked bread, tasty coffee and crispy bacon with scrambled eggs. Exactly that and much more is ready here every morning in the breakfast restaurant from 08:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and until 10:30 a.m. in the weekend. Enjoy the most important meal of the day with a view across the enclosed garden.

“Quiet, clean and comfortable!”

We drove to Bruges, our first visit and The Flanders was very easy to find and the parking at the back was convenient. It didn't have the flashiness of some local four star hotels but it was very good value, it was clean and comfortable- nice pillows, and bedding and the bathroom was modern and probably recently refurbished. The staff were all lovely, friendly and helpful. And the brekkie was fab too, full cooked plus all continental options, endless tea/coffee, juice etc etc. It was the quietest hotel stay I have ever had even though they were apparently 80% full. Great location too with a pleasant short walk into the very centre of Bruges.

“Fab stylish hotel”

Belated Valentines weekend with Mr De V ,and despite torrential rain most of the time we had a fab visit .Tthe hotel is centrally located in a street with quirky vintage and antique shops . Our room was overlooking an outside garden area ,great sized room and large bathroom .Pool though small was good. Breakfast was really impressive, staff pleasant and efficient. Only couple of niggles - no body lotions etc in bathroom - just a small dispenser of bath / body wash and leaning over the basins for make up - a shaving mirror would be so much nicer - expect a bit more from a 4 star !But really just minor niggles - lovey stay and would definitely book again when returning to Brugges !

Good location about 10 mins stroll to centre and Parking. Only flaw was sound proofing from room above unless there was a troupe of tap dancers staying. “Lovely hotel in bruge”

1st time in bruge and it definitely won't be our last. The flanders is located within easy walking distance of the town centre, the hotel is very clean and rooms are fantastically set out. You have a good selection of food for breakfast and where ever you are within the hotel the staff are brilliant and make you feel very welcome. The bar area I'd definitely worth a visit especially at happy hour 😆 We will be booking again during the year for an extra long stay, enjoyed our stay so much. Congratulations to all the staff and team behind the flanders, thank you for a lovely stay. Adam and Tina ☺

“great valentines weekend stay”

Stayed here for the weekend and really enjoyed ourselves. The hotel staff were great, the breakfast was good with a good range of food. We paid a little more for the club room and from the pictures we think it was worth ever penny. Parking is limited and you have to pay €14 a night but defiantly worth reserving a space. Once parked we didn't move the car and walked everywhere which was easy enough about 10-15mins from most of the city centre. Would really recommend this hotel to anyone.
