Bruges open air museum

The historic centre of Bruges is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you walk through the city, you imagine yourself in an open air museum. Because there is so much to see and do, you need to make choices. A few tips:

Museum
Groeningemuseum gives a rich and fascinating overview of six centuries of Flemish and Belgian art. Works exhibited include those by Jan van Eyck and Marcel Broodthaers. In the Middle Ages, Het Huis van Gruuthuske belonged to the Van Brugghe-van der Aa family. The family had a monopoly on the sale of “gruut”, a herb mix from which beer was made. Gruuthusemuseum is now located in the house and has an interesting collection of art and antiques. At chocolate museum Choco-Story on Sint-Janssstraat, you learn all about chocolate. This starts with the history of the basic material: the cocoa bean. Epicurean Bruges even has its own Frietmuseum. This museum is located in the Saalhalle, one of the oldest buildings in Bruges, and explains the birth and history of friet (chips). And you get to taste them at the end of the tour.

Places of interest
Het Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaard with whitewashed façades, tranquil abbey garden and Begijnhofmuseum, was established in 1245. The Sisters of the Order of St.-Benedictus reside there now. Warning: the access gate to the Begijnhof closes at 6:30 p.m. without fail. In Onthaalkerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, you can admire many works of art including Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child and the mausoleums of Karel de Stoute and Maria van Bourgondië.

Children
De Toverplaneet is a beautiful, large indoor playground in a former vegetable warehouse, with playground equipment of some 10 metres high. Another fun indoor playground is Speeldorp Brugge, with bouncy castles, obstacle courses, ball pit and slides. Het Boudewijn Seapark has fun attractions such as a water slide, roller coaster and bumper cars. There are also live shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions taking the leading role.

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Barazar
When it’s time for afternoon drinks, you can start in the sociable hotel bar, Barazar. Because of course there’s nothing nicer than a fresh Stella or sparkling wine. The bar is open from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. There’s traditional beer, crystal clear Stella and Brugse Zot on tap, but the bar also has delicious cocktails and a wide range of quality wines and various spirits. You can sit on the patio in the enclosed garden when the weather’s fine with a delicious sparkling wine.

Great start to the day
In Flanders Hotel Brugge - Hampshire Classic, they know what a good breakfast is: something you’ll be pleased to get out of your comfy hotel bed for. There are freshly-pressed fruit juices, freshly-baked bread, tasty coffee and crispy bacon with scrambled eggs. Exactly that and much more is ready here every morning in the breakfast restaurant from 08:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and until 10:30 a.m. in the weekend. Enjoy the most important meal of the day with a view across the enclosed garden.

“Good”

Just recently stayed here for 2 nights . It was a standard room but large with an enormous bed. The decor was gold and red and reminiscent of the 70's but that was no problem. The downside was that it was way too hot to sleep on the 2nd night, even with the fan on. Parking was 14 euro a day for a motorbike which was excessive but at least it was safe. The breakfast was pretty poor - hard boiled eggs (rock hard), scrambled eggs, bread, croissants, pastries, cheese and hams and coffee from a machine. Fresh but not worth paying for. The bar was great, comfy armchairs, great music and very friendly staff. Also, if you ordered tea or coffee you always got a piece of cake, piece of chocolate and a biscuit - a very nice touch. Swimming pool looked minute so didn't bother with that. Overall, a nice hotel but too expensive at 270 euros for 2 days A couple of points about bruges: * the city is overrun with tourists and loses charm because of it * the horses pulling the carriages are overworked and not treated well at all. They were constantly on the go (fast trotting) and felt hot like they had been in a race. Broke my heart to see them being treated so bad and really put a downer on my holiday. * the city is hugely expensive. 40p to use any of the public toilets and most main courses are between 24-28 euros. Tourists get completely ripped off. Try using restaurants outside the main squares . A good choice in pilpil on langestraat.

“Value for money and walking distance to the centre”

We chose the Flanders based on the reviews on here and the price which was midrange for Bruges. The hotel itself is on the east side of Bruges which initially looked like it was a long way out but that was before I realised how small Bruges is and in reality it is less than 10 minutes was to the Berg and Markt. The hotel is clean and the staff friendly and extremely helpful-and all (like everyone working in the tourist industry in Bruges) spoke perfect English. We had a room on the top floor which was quiet and plenty big enough for the two of us. Unfortunately the double bed was two singles pushed together with a dip in the middle but as we only booked it a week before I'm guessing this was all that was left. Breakfast was a good continental selection which is served until 11am every day so perfect for those who want a lie in. The food continues to be topped up so we always had plenty of choices. If you book through a third party site that doesn't include breakfast, get in touch with the hotel direct after you've booked and you can have breakfast added to your room for €9.50 instead of paying €15 if you choose to have it when you get there. If you want to try the three Michelin star restaurant in Bruges this is almost opposite the hotel but be prepared-any money you save staying in the hotel you'll spend in the restaurant....it starts at €145 per head! Overall a good, clean mid range hotel that doesn't promise more than you expect for the price. It is close enough you don't need to spend more to stay more central.

“Lovely stay :)”

My partner, my parents and I stayed for one night. The reception and bar areas were modern and attractive. There was an indoor pool free to use for all guests, which I thought was a nice touch. The rooms were very pleasant with mini bar and doors out onto a roof terrace... The rooms were adjoining so we shared the outdoor area... It was a very pleasant surprise to be able to sit outdoors in private! The only downside was that the two rooms seemed to be of differing quality, though we paid the same for both. One room was a fair bit smaller, not as nicely decorated and had no air conditioning. It was thoughtful of them to give us the adjoining rooms however perhaps two rooms of the same value would have been preferable. Would definitely visit again though.

“The ideal location to explore Bruges.”

The hotel is excellent. Breakfast is all you would want and the staff are all very helpful and friendly. I can't recommend it enough. The location is 800m from the market square on lovely cobbled streets and the short walk helps to digest the breakfast before embarking on the chocolate.
