Bruges open air museum

The historic centre of Bruges is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you walk through the city, you imagine yourself in an open air museum. Because there is so much to see and do, you need to make choices. A few tips:

Museum
Groeningemuseum gives a rich and fascinating overview of six centuries of Flemish and Belgian art. Works exhibited include those by Jan van Eyck and Marcel Broodthaers. In the Middle Ages, Het Huis van Gruuthuske belonged to the Van Brugghe-van der Aa family. The family had a monopoly on the sale of “gruut”, a herb mix from which beer was made. Gruuthusemuseum is now located in the house and has an interesting collection of art and antiques. At chocolate museum Choco-Story on Sint-Janssstraat, you learn all about chocolate. This starts with the history of the basic material: the cocoa bean. Epicurean Bruges even has its own Frietmuseum. This museum is located in the Saalhalle, one of the oldest buildings in Bruges, and explains the birth and history of friet (chips). And you get to taste them at the end of the tour.

Places of interest
Het Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaard with whitewashed façades, tranquil abbey garden and Begijnhofmuseum, was established in 1245. The Sisters of the Order of St.-Benedictus reside there now. Warning: the access gate to the Begijnhof closes at 6:30 p.m. without fail. In Onthaalkerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, you can admire many works of art including Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child and the mausoleums of Karel de Stoute and Maria van Bourgondië.

Children
De Toverplaneet is a beautiful, large indoor playground in a former vegetable warehouse, with playground equipment of some 10 metres high. Another fun indoor playground is Speeldorp Brugge, with bouncy castles, obstacle courses, ball pit and slides. Het Boudewijn Seapark has fun attractions such as a water slide, roller coaster and bumper cars. There are also live shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions taking the leading role.

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Barazar
When it’s time for afternoon drinks, you can start in the sociable hotel bar, Barazar. Because of course there’s nothing nicer than a fresh Stella or sparkling wine. The bar is open from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. There’s traditional beer, crystal clear Stella and Brugse Zot on tap, but the bar also has delicious cocktails and a wide range of quality wines and various spirits. You can sit on the patio in the enclosed garden when the weather’s fine with a delicious sparkling wine.

Great start to the day
In Flanders Hotel Brugge - Hampshire Classic, they know what a good breakfast is: something you’ll be pleased to get out of your comfy hotel bed for. There are freshly-pressed fruit juices, freshly-baked bread, tasty coffee and crispy bacon with scrambled eggs. Exactly that and much more is ready here every morning in the breakfast restaurant from 08:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and until 10:30 a.m. in the weekend. Enjoy the most important meal of the day with a view across the enclosed garden.

“Nice Hotel in a good location”

We stayed here for a week as a family in August from a recommendation of my brother in law. Nice and easy to find, and in a great location. Parking at rear of Hotel which was a real bonus as we left the car there all week and walked, cycled, caught boats, horses and carriages and tour buses to enjoy getting around!

“A great time in a lovely hotel and city!”

Stayed two nights but didn't feel like leaving. Had one of the spacious and modern Club rooms and the air-con was most welcome during the warm weather! Breakfast varied and fresh, staff most attentive with helping us avoid the tourist traps and the onsite parking seemingly rare for Bruges. Though we'd been before, Bruges never fails to entertain and the Flanders Hotel made it that much more enjoyable still!

“Expensive rubbish”

Bedrooms have no aircon. Beds split in the middle so if you are a couple newly married avoid this place otherwise you'll end up sleeping on the floor. Breakfasts not included, not very impressed at all... we were given a back room with steep stairs and no help getting to our room. Staff are friendly but for the price I will not be staying here again.... VERY DISAPPOINTED!
Owner Response of Flanders Hotel Brugge - Hampshire Classic
We're once again humbled by recent feedback and are obviously very dissappointed that we weren't equally able to please 'Karlc12karl' when staying with us during what was a rare spell of tropical weather in Bruges. It is however important to point out that 1. a preference for a double or twin bedded room can be selected/submitted at the time of booking (doubles ARE available for both room types), which didn't happen in this case 2. as clearly indicated with all booking channels, our Club room type is in all cases equipped with air-conditioning (as well as some 'Classic'-rooms, available on a first-come, first serve request basis) 3. the room that guests stayed is indeed located away from the street side of the hotel, it also overlooks the pond and was fully refurbished late last year 4. though clearly indicated with all booking channels, breakfast may or may not be included with the particular rate booked, where pre-booking it (at € 11,90 instead of € 15,90) is advantageous. Finally and with no complaints lodged with us during the course of this one-night stay, we would like to invite 'Karlc12karl' to contact the hotel management if and when ever returning to Bruges, so we can make extra sure that a stay with us meets expectations!

“Great service but accommodation lacking”

We found the staff to be very helpful, they knew the city and provided good restaurant recommendations and managed to get us a table at sought after restaurant at the last minute. The room however was not good - noisy and hot. There was no aircon and although the weather wasn't hot outside the room was stuffy and located by the main back door so we heard this opening and closing. The children loved the swimming pool but it is tiny - okay if you are the only family there! Breakfast was very overpriced with no reduction for children. Good location, close to centre but I probably wouldn't recommend unless a different room is guaranteed!
