Bruges open air museum

The historic centre of Bruges is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you walk through the city, you imagine yourself in an open air museum. Because there is so much to see and do, you need to make choices. A few tips:

Groeningemuseum gives a rich and fascinating overview of six centuries of Flemish and Belgian art. Works exhibited include those by Jan van Eyck and Marcel Broodthaers. In the Middle Ages, Het Huis van Gruuthuske belonged to the Van Brugghe-van der Aa family. The family had a monopoly on the sale of “gruut”, a herb mix from which beer was made. Gruuthusemuseum is now located in the house and has an interesting collection of art and antiques. At chocolate museum Choco-Story on Sint-Janssstraat, you learn all about chocolate. This starts with the history of the basic material: the cocoa bean. Epicurean Bruges even has its own Frietmuseum. This museum is located in the Saalhalle, one of the oldest buildings in Bruges, and explains the birth and history of friet (chips). And you get to taste them at the end of the tour.

Places of interest
Het Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaard with whitewashed façades, tranquil abbey garden and Begijnhofmuseum, was established in 1245. The Sisters of the Order of St.-Benedictus reside there now. Warning: the access gate to the Begijnhof closes at 6:30 p.m. without fail. In Onthaalkerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, you can admire many works of art including Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child and the mausoleums of Karel de Stoute and Maria van Bourgondië.

De Toverplaneet is a beautiful, large indoor playground in a former vegetable warehouse, with playground equipment of some 10 metres high. Another fun indoor playground is Speeldorp Brugge, with bouncy castles, obstacle courses, ball pit and slides. Het Boudewijn Seapark has fun attractions such as a water slide, roller coaster and bumper cars. There are also live shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions taking the leading role.

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

When it’s time for afternoon drinks, you can start in the sociable hotel bar, Barazar. Because of course there’s nothing nicer than a fresh Stella or sparkling wine. The bar is open from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. There’s traditional beer, crystal clear Stella and Brugse Zot on tap, but the bar also has delicious cocktails and a wide range of quality wines and various spirits. You can sit on the patio in the enclosed garden when the weather’s fine with a delicious sparkling wine.

Great start to the day
In Flanders Hotel Brugge - Hampshire Classic, they know what a good breakfast is: something you’ll be pleased to get out of your comfy hotel bed for. There are freshly-pressed fruit juices, freshly-baked bread, tasty coffee and crispy bacon with scrambled eggs. We stayed in this hotel on Sunday the 27th July for one night. Location excellent. Really lovely hotel. We had room 102 which had air conditioning, patio area, superb shower and a really comfy bed, basically all you could ask for. Staff on reception was more than helpful with any query we had. Parking overnight was €14, it may be a good idea to book this in advance of your stay. Breakfast was nice, basic continental fare. Free WiFi in the room ,also a flat screen TV with oodles of English speaking channels. Good bar area, I believe it stays open until 1a.m. All in all a really excellent hotel.

“Good hotel with professional guest services”

Centrally located hotel - Booked 2 rooms - One room was refurnished and very contemporary and comfortable - The other room was not refurnished yet and was more old-fashioned, but known beforehand, so no surprises. Mind while booking if your room has got airconditioning or not. During the summer time it is recommended. I specifically mention the professional guest services even the after-sales: the hotel mgmt was very professional to resolve an issue we reported after we left. This proves that you're in good hands in this hotel!

“All good, but make sure you go for air-con”

Location about 5 minutes walk from Markt & Burg and you'll pass half a dozen hotels nearer both as you walk in, but it's a pleasant stroll. Triple room was a good size, as was the bathroom. Hot & cold buffet breakfast was excellent, as was the bar and the terrace area, perfect to wind down in after a hard day doing nothing. Take mozzy repellant for later on in the evening though. Staff were superb, would definitely stay again but would book a room with air-con (not all rooms have it, and even though the widows opened fully, it would have been a bit more comfortable.) Don't miss the Halve Maan brewery tour & don't be afraid to eat there afterwards, the food, especially the Flemish stew, is superb.

“Great Hotel with very nice staff in a great location.”

My wife and I stayed one night at the Hotel in July. The room was very nice and we booked one with an air conditioner which made the 30º+ heat outside much more bareable. The staff was very nice and could speak multiple languages very well. We loved it and will be back again.

“Would recommend”

Location is great, about 7-8 minutes away from the center. There were other hotels directly in the center, but it might be louder and from what I saw, they will not be quite as nice and likely significantly more pricey. You're more likely to get a much nicer room by going just a few minutes away from the center. Room was very clean and comfortable. Free Wifi (could have a stronger signal though). Hotel staff are very helpful. Check in time is at 2pm, but when i arrived at 12, my room happened to be ready. Breakfast was nice. Would recommend.
