Bruges open air museum

The historic centre of Bruges is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you walk through the city, you imagine yourself in an open air museum. Because there is so much to see and do, you need to make choices. A few tips:

Museum
Groeningemuseum gives a rich and fascinating overview of six centuries of Flemish and Belgian art. Works exhibited include those by Jan van Eyck and Marcel Broodthaers. In the Middle Ages, Het Huis van Gruuthuske belonged to the Van Brugghe-van der Aa family. The family had a monopoly on the sale of “gruut”, a herb mix from which beer was made. Gruuthusemuseum is now located in the house and has an interesting collection of art and antiques. At chocolate museum Choco-Story on Sint-Janssstraat, you learn all about chocolate. This starts with the history of the basic material: the cocoa bean. Epicurean Bruges even has its own Frietmuseum. This museum is located in the Saalhalle, one of the oldest buildings in Bruges, and explains the birth and history of friet (chips). And you get to taste them at the end of the tour.

Places of interest
Het Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaard with whitewashed façades, tranquil abbey garden and Begijnhofmuseum, was established in 1245. The Sisters of the Order of St.-Benedictus reside there now. Warning: the access gate to the Begijnhof closes at 6:30 p.m. without fail. In Onthaalkerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, you can admire many works of art including Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child and the mausoleums of Karel de Stoute and Maria van Bourgondië.

Children
De Toverplaneet is a beautiful, large indoor playground in a former vegetable warehouse, with playground equipment of some 10 metres high. Another fun indoor playground is Speeldorp Brugge, with bouncy castles, obstacle courses, ball pit and slides. Het Boudewijn Seapark has fun attractions such as a water slide, roller coaster and bumper cars. There are also live shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions taking the leading role.

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Barazar
When it’s time for afternoon drinks, you can start in the sociable hotel bar, Barazar. Because of course there’s nothing nicer than a fresh Stella or sparkling wine. The bar is open from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. There’s traditional beer, crystal clear Stella and Brugse Zot on tap, but the bar also has delicious cocktails and a wide range of quality wines and various spirits. You can sit on the patio in the enclosed garden when the weather’s fine with a delicious sparkling wine.

Great start to the day
In Flanders Hotel Brugge - Hampshire Classic, they know what a good breakfast is: something you’ll be pleased to get out of your comfy hotel bed for. There are freshly-pressed fruit juices, freshly-baked bread, tasty coffee and crispy bacon with scrambled eggs. Exactly that and much more is ready here every morning in the breakfast restaurant from 08:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and until 10:30 a.m. in the weekend. Enjoy the most important meal of the day with a view across the enclosed garden.

“Very nice hotel in a fantastic location”

Spent a night at the Flanders hotel and found it extremely satisfying and relaxing. Its location is central and few minutes of walking from all main attractions in Bruges. Breakfast was nice with good variety. The limited parking spaces outside were quite handy. Definitely would recommend this hotel.

“Worst room ever at highest price ever.”

We had room 14. The worst room I have ever seen in a hotel of this category, maybe in a 2* or 3*. The only one in -1, with small windows looking at the garden of the bar. The carpet was old, dirty and smelly. Not confortable matress.I must say I loved breakfast. But I will never go back there or recommend to anybody.

“Nice hotel in a great location.”

Stayed here earlier in the year. We had a very nice room, clean and modern with a big bathroom and lots of space. The whole hotel is modern, nicely decorated and very clean. It's in a great location. Just a few minutes walk from the main square in Bruges and easy walking distance from all the main attractions.

“A nice break”

Decided to take my wife to Bruges for a few days. Booked room directly with hotel after reviewing on Trip advisor. Requested non-smoking room, ideally at the rear of hotel (advised quieter) and not on the ground floor- which was provided (room 112). We paid a little more for a slightly larger room with air conditioning. I suppose a little disappointed with the room if being honest (no carpet on the floor) and did think about seeing if any other rooms were available however this was our only criticism and as everything else was ok decided to stick with what we had requested. Service levels provided were very good and friendly throughout (although a minor mix up with the final bill presented was for the wrong room, followed by a bill for the right room but which included two breakfasts which were not ordered or taken). The problem was quickly and politely rectified and we were offered free coffee whilst waiting for the right person to arrive and sort it out a few minutes later. The cleaning of our room each day was excellent, the room was always spotlessly clean. The breakfast provided (we prepaid at Euros 9.50 per day) was of good quality and considering the prices charged by local cafes/restaurants excellent value. Excellent friendly barman and attentive breakfast staff. Overall a nice experience and would stay here again. Thanks to all at the hotel staff for their hard work.

“Great location, clean, friendly staff with parking”

We stayed at the hotel for a couple of nights and had a fantastic time. Parking is available via the hotel for about 14 euros per 24 hours. We were greeted by very friendly helpful staff. The room was large, modern and very clean. We booked last minute and found the rate very reasonable. The hotel is very close to the main attractions but not on top of it all so it's nice and quiet. The only slight downsides were our shower absolutely flooded our bathroom each time we used it and the towels are getting a bit thin! We would absolutely stay here again.
