Bruges open air museum

The historic centre of Bruges is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you walk through the city, you imagine yourself in an open air museum. Because there is so much to see and do, you need to make choices. A few tips:

Museum
Groeningemuseum gives a rich and fascinating overview of six centuries of Flemish and Belgian art. Works exhibited include those by Jan van Eyck and Marcel Broodthaers. In the Middle Ages, Het Huis van Gruuthuske belonged to the Van Brugghe-van der Aa family. The family had a monopoly on the sale of “gruut”, a herb mix from which beer was made. Gruuthusemuseum is now located in the house and has an interesting collection of art and antiques. At chocolate museum Choco-Story on Sint-Janssstraat, you learn all about chocolate. This starts with the history of the basic material: the cocoa bean. Epicurean Bruges even has its own Frietmuseum. This museum is located in the Saalhalle, one of the oldest buildings in Bruges, and explains the birth and history of friet (chips). And you get to taste them at the end of the tour.

Places of interest
Het Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaard with whitewashed façades, tranquil abbey garden and Begijnhofmuseum, was established in 1245. The Sisters of the Order of St.-Benedictus reside there now. Warning: the access gate to the Begijnhof closes at 6:30 p.m. without fail. In Onthaalkerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, you can admire many works of art including Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child and the mausoleums of Karel de Stoute and Maria van Bourgondië.

Children
De Toverplaneet is a beautiful, large indoor playground in a former vegetable warehouse, with playground equipment of some 10 metres high. Another fun indoor playground is Speeldorp Brugge, with bouncy castles, obstacle courses, ball pit and slides. Het Boudewijn Seapark has fun attractions such as a water slide, roller coaster and bumper cars. There are also live shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions taking the leading role.

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Barazar
When it’s time for afternoon drinks, you can start in the sociable hotel bar, Barazar. Because of course there’s nothing nicer than a fresh Stella or sparkling wine. The bar is open from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. There’s traditional beer, crystal clear Stella and Brugse Zot on tap, but the bar also has delicious cocktails and a wide range of quality wines and various spirits. You can sit on the patio in the enclosed garden when the weather’s fine with a delicious sparkling wine.

Great start to the day
In Flanders Hotel Brugge - Hampshire Classic, they know what a good breakfast is: something you’ll be pleased to get out of your comfy hotel bed for. There are freshly-pressed fruit juices, freshly-baked bread, tasty coffee and crispy bacon with scrambled eggs. Exactly that and much more is ready here every morning in the breakfast restaurant from 08:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and until 10:30 a.m. in the weekend. Enjoy the most important meal of the day with a view across the enclosed garden.

“Christmas stay”

We stayed at the Flanders hotel for one night whilst visiting Bruges Christmas markets. The receptionist on check in was very friendly and helpful and gave us a city map and pointed out the main sites and where and where not to eat. Our room was on the first floor and whilst the decor was a bit dated the room was comfortable and clean and we even had a large balcony. Shame it was December and a bit too cold to use it! We made the most of the half price drinks at Happy Hour in the bar before going out for a meal. Location of the hotel was excellent, close to the main squares and shops. Bit of a long way from the train station we had quite a trek with our wheelie cases over all the cobbled streets!! We didn't have breakfast in the hotel as it seemed quite expensive. Would definitely stay again if we were back in Bruges.

“Great location”

We stayed here for 2 nights, we had a room with a shared terrace which was a nice added extra. I thought the room was well equipped and bathroom was adequate. The reception staff were really friendly and we loved the bar serving half price drinks between 16.30-17.30 I especially loved the cherry beer. The half price drinks were a lovely touch as we found Bruge itself to be fairly expensive for drinks and food. We found a car pack which was underground behind the hotel, it was really cheap compared to the prices I've heard people have paid. I think it around 8E for 24hrs. (Don't quote me though!) Very nice and safe, secure, car park. We didn't try breakfast at the hotel, so cannot comment, but again, most restaurants seemed expensive, from memory we seen a toastie for 17.50E so do your research before you get here. The location of this hotel is perfect, few minutes from Market Square. I'd definitely recommend the boat trip and would stay at this hotel again if in Bruge.

“Nice destination, staff very helpful”

I really appreciate my stay there. The hotel is very close to the center, 5 minutes from Grand Place. The staff is very helpful. They provide us nice places and restaurants with a good value for money. The breakfast was copious. We enjoyed the swimming pool before a day of visiting.

“Great location & friendly staff”

Our room was really spacious compared to other hotels we have stayed at. The location is perfect for getting around Brugge and is walking distance to almost everything. The staff were really friendly, helping us book restaurants, taxis, trains and hiring bikes. The wifi in the room could be better. It was OK for surfing the internet, but we had to go downstairs to the lobby to make a call. The price of our room included breakfast which had everything you could want and available until 11am. I would definitely stay here again.
