Bruges open air museum

The historic centre of Bruges is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. When you walk through the city, you imagine yourself in an open air museum. Because there is so much to see and do, you need to make choices. A few tips:

Museum
Groeningemuseum gives a rich and fascinating overview of six centuries of Flemish and Belgian art. Works exhibited include those by Jan van Eyck and Marcel Broodthaers. In the Middle Ages, Het Huis van Gruuthuske belonged to the Van Brugghe-van der Aa family. The family had a monopoly on the sale of “gruut”, a herb mix from which beer was made. Gruuthusemuseum is now located in the house and has an interesting collection of art and antiques. At chocolate museum Choco-Story on Sint-Janssstraat, you learn all about chocolate. This starts with the history of the basic material: the cocoa bean. Epicurean Bruges even has its own Frietmuseum. This museum is located in the Saalhalle, one of the oldest buildings in Bruges, and explains the birth and history of friet (chips). And you get to taste them at the end of the tour.

Places of interest
Het Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaard with whitewashed façades, tranquil abbey garden and Begijnhofmuseum, was established in 1245. The Sisters of the Order of St.-Benedictus reside there now. Warning: the access gate to the Begijnhof closes at 6:30 p.m. without fail. In Onthaalkerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw, you can admire many works of art including Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child and the mausoleums of Karel de Stoute and Maria van Bourgondië.

Children
De Toverplaneet is a beautiful, large indoor playground in a former vegetable warehouse, with playground equipment of some 10 metres high. Another fun indoor playground is Speeldorp Brugge, with bouncy castles, obstacle courses, ball pit and slides. Het Boudewijn Seapark has fun attractions such as a water slide, roller coaster and bumper cars. There are also live shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions taking the leading role.

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Delicious breakfast and a convivial drink

Barazar
When it’s time for afternoon drinks, you can start in the sociable hotel bar, Barazar. Because of course there’s nothing nicer than a fresh Stella or sparkling wine. The bar is open from 4:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. There’s traditional beer, crystal clear Stella and Brugse Zot on tap, but the bar also has delicious cocktails and a wide range of quality wines and various spirits. You can sit on the patio in the enclosed garden when the weather’s fine with a delicious sparkling wine.

Great start to the day
In Flanders Hotel Brugge - Hampshire Classic, they know what a good breakfast is: something you’ll be pleased to get out of your comfy hotel bed for. There are freshly-pressed fruit juices, freshly-baked bread, tasty coffee and crispy bacon with scrambled eggs. Exactly that and much more is ready here every morning in the breakfast restaurant from 08:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and until 10:30 a.m. in the weekend. Enjoy the most important meal of the day with a view across the enclosed garden.

“Great Hotel with very nice staff in a great location.”

My wife and I stayed one night at the Hotel in July. The room was very nice and we booked one with an air conditioner which made the 30º+ heat outside much more bareable. The staff was very nice and could speak multiple languages very well. We loved it and will be back again.

“Would recommend”

Location is great, about 7-8 minutes away from the center. There were other hotels directly in the center, but it might be louder and from what I saw, they will not be quite as nice and likely significantly more pricey. You're more likely to get a much nicer room by going just a few minutes away from the center. Room was very clean and comfortable. Free Wifi (could have a stronger signal though). Hotel staff are very helpful. Check in time is at 2pm, but when i arrived at 12, my room happened to be ready. Breakfast was nice. Would recommend.

“Excellent!”

Our experience in Bruges was certainly better due to this hotel. Very good and calm location, near the center but not inside of the touristic area. Kind and helpful staff, indicated us good restaurants nearby. Wonderful breakfast!

“Great value, gem of a hotel in Bruges.”

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights in June. When we booked our weekend, we didn't realize that it was Pentecost, and Bruges would be packed with tourists and most establishments would be closed. Location: It's not in the middle of the Markt, but it's only a short walk away. Absolutely worth it to be away from the tourist crowds, noise, and overpriced restaurants. Room: We originally booked the Suite, but upon arrival, we were told there was a leak in the room above and our Suite room was not available. It would have been appreciated if we were notified about the room change in advance by cell or email, but at least we had a replacement room. We were put in a very nice Club room. The Club room had central air conditioning, a clean bathroom, and a comfortable bed. We could not hear the street or other guests from our room. The only complaint I have about the bathroom is the odd positioning of the shower head. Instead of being mounted on the wall to spray down the length of the shower/tub, it is mounted on the adjacent wall to spray across the short width. It makes it a bit tricky for couples to enjoy the shower together and more likely for you to get water on the floor. Bar: The bar is really cozy as well. My boyfriend and I spent the evening down at the bar after dinner one night. I ordered a latte, and my latte was delivered with some chocolates and a small cookie. They have a decent and affordable beer selection too. Staff: Everyone we spoke with was very helpful and polite.

“Nice location, good hotel”

The hotel is well situated, staff friendly. The rooms were clean, but a bit too dark (dark beige walls and not enough lamps). Maybe it is trendy but made reading difficult. Clean. Breakfast OK and they provided gluteinfree bread too, when asked for. The wifi connections was very poor.
