Discover the wonderful world of caves

Those who think of Valkenburg immediately think of the marl quarry caves. Things would have to take an unusual turn if you didn’t end up in the wonderful world of caves in Valkenburg when you stay for a weekend in Grand Hotel Voncken - Hampshire Classic. But there's lots more to do nearby!

The history of Kasteelruïne van Valkenburg goes back to the eleventh century. You can visit the former quarters of knights such as Walram de Rosse and Gosewijn and view the knight’s hall, weapon room and underground escape routes. The escape routes eventually lead to the Fluweelengrot. Together with a guide you can take a cave trip past wall paintings, inscriptions and a chapel dating from the French period (18th Century). Another cave in the area is Gemeentegrot. Tours are given here too. The fantastic Openluchttheater Valkenburg offers an exciting annual summer programme of music, theatre and dance.

At the Drielandenpunt in Vaals you’re in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany simultaneously. The playground and maze are extra attractions for the children. At AGoGo Valkenburg the kids can zoom 375 metres down the toboggan run.

There are various beautiful golf courses in the area of the hotel, such as Golf & Countryclub Hoenshuis, Zuid Limburgse Golf & Countryclub Wittem and Het Rijk van Margraten.

Valkenburg has a rich cycling history. The World Cycling Championships has been held five times on the roads in Valkenburg and surroundings, the last time in 2012. Other cycling competitions also frequently race up the renowned Cauberg, such as the annual Amstel Gold Race.

Valkenburg Christmas markets are legendary. In the dark days before Christmas, Valkenburg is transformed into an attractive Christmas town. Enjoy the countless lights, Christmas trees, the culinary Route d’Amuse walk and the underground Christmas markets in Fluweelengrot and Gemeentegrot.

Restaurant with fans from across the country

Restaurant with fans from across the country

Restaurant Voncken
Visitors from across the country praise the kitchen of this hospitable restaurant. Simply because here they know what good cooking is here. Just how good can be seen from the guests who come here. Celebrity chefs Margo Reuten from Da Vinci and Erik van Loo from Parkheuvel are spotted here regularly. The kitchen is the domain of Head Chef Hans Pijls, who has more than 40 years’ cooking experience. He cooks pure food and with a feeling for French cooking history. This results in delicious, epicurean dishes that also match the season perfectly. What about fried goose liver with black pudding and caramelised apple, followed by partridge with sauerkraut? And of course with a delicious and fitting wine from the extensive wine menu, such as Elzasser Pinot Gris.

“Only for one night”

This hotel is overpriced and dated. Felt like a hospital... Really poor breakfast. Parking near by is good. On the other side, why visit this boring village anyway? We didn't get it. We hit the road after one night.

“Very nice hotel @ the Castle Ruins & walking mall.”

Reservations a must for this location; Staff & Service outstanding. While not a new and modern facility, it is very well maintained. Rooms are large and have modern updates, for a European Hotel. Request parking when making your reservation as parking is limited but it's in a secure area. Public parking is nearby, not free. Free Wi-Fi in rooms. A 1st Class French restaurant is located off the entrance area on the ground floor. Very nice 3-course Dinner & 2 drinks in the 50 Euro range, but well worth the price.

“Weekend Valkenburg”

To visit Valkenburg, we booked this hotel for the weekend. The hotel is situated just near the centre of the city. Parking is difficult in Valkenburg, but in the weekend the hotel has an option on parking places nearby (not for free). You can drive and go as you like. We preferred walking to all the interesting place, everything is rather nearby. The people at the reception were very friendly. We got a room on the second floor. Most of the time we took the stair, but there is a small elevator. The room was well sized, very clean and a bathroom with a bath. The hotel and the rooms are somewhat dated, but that also has its charms. The beds are rather soft but comfortable. Together with the room we had made a diner reservation. You can have diner everywhere in the centre, there are a lot of restaurants in the neighborhood. But we have no regrets that we had diner in the hotel. The kitchen of this hotel is really very good. Breakfast in the morning was included and we had a good continental selection. Internet in the hotel was fast and it was for free. When returning to Valkenburg it is likely to visit this hotel again.

“Mix up landed in our favour!”

We arrived in Valkenburg having booked a room at another hotel, only to find that they had overbooked and had moved us to a hotel down the road - Hotel Voncken. The hotel was lovely with a beautifully decorated foyer, bar and dining room. The room, on the third floor (but accessible by lift), was clean and spacious with wardrobes, a fridge, seating area and lovely clean bathroom. The decor was a little 70's but obviously done properly in the first place as nothing was overly tired or Breakfast was extensive and delicious (first time we found boiled eggs on a continental buffet) and we left feeling very satisfied. The staff were friendly and helpful and let us leave our bags after checkout to allow us to explore the town. We loved Valkenburg generally and had a lovely meal out and a fab time exploring the castle - we would definitely visit again and book this hotel again!

“No Frills but Okay”

My girlfriend and I spent two nights at this hotel over the Hemelvaart weekend. The hotel is easy to find: don't be discouraged, the town gets interesting just behind this square; the walk from the station can be a tad discouraging. The hotel was a basic older, family-run hotel: friendly staff and slightly outdated everything. The room was clean and had a renovated bathroom. The bed was a bit disappointing: one mattress too hard, the other too soft. The most concerning part was that there's no deadbolt on the door. This door and the walls are paper-thin, a noise curfew sign would have helped remind people that other guests are sleeping. Breakfast was classic continental, and very nice. The hotel is one block away from dozens of restaurants and shops. While we would probably choose to stay in Maastricht the next time we return to Limburg, the Voncken was a fine (if not Grand) hotel that seems par for the course in Valkenburg.
