Meet a roe deer or badger in the forest!

From Hampshire Boshotel – Overberg you can just walk into the Nationaal Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug. This hilly area runs from the Grebbeberg near Rhenen to the Gooimeer near Huizen and contains woods, heathland, sand drifts and grassland. It’s very likely that you’ll come across roe deer, foxes, badgers, rare pine martins and unique birds during your walk. Prefer the city? You can be in Arnhem or Utrecht within a half hour drive. A few tips about the surroundings:

Kasteel Amerongen was built 700 years ago, commissioned by the brothers Henric and Diederic Borre. Today, the castle is a museum with its own collection of art and antiques. In the Militaire Luchtvaart Museum in Soesterberg there are interesting exhibitions about flying and aircraft throughout the year. Prefer trains? Then the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht is highly recommended. For a broader subject, namely the history of the Netherlands, you can visit the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem. The “inhabitants” of the museum tell you special stories about daily life in days gone by.

All big theatre performances that tour the country appear on the stage at Theater De Lampegiet in Veenendaal. Check the programme and book your seat in time.

In the Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen more is possible than just looking at special animals. Children can also take part in treasure hunts and experience adventures with real adventurers. To cool off when the mercury reaches high summer temperatures, try the Henschotermeer natural swimming pool. At Pyramide van Austerlitz the children can play in the playground, bump into each other in bumper cars and take a turn on the carousel.

The Golfclub Anderstein golf course in Maarsbergen offers more than enough challenges. There are no fewer than 27 holes to play on this beautiful course, situated partly in the Gelderse Vallei and partly on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

Restaurant Boshotel Overberg
The serenity of the immediate surroundings of Hampshire Boshotel – Overberg is also found in the restaurant. From here you have a view of the forest. The open kitchen and crackling open fire also give the restaurant a special ambiance. The kitchen has a French-Dutch orientation and uses only organic produce, including those from the “green” butcher, Ton Molenaar in Amersfoort. You can visit the restaurant the whole day for breakfast, lunch or dinner or for a a quick snack.

Brasserie De Holle Boom
Brasserie De Holle Boom is right next to the hotel. It’s highly recommended that you take a bite to eat here; the décor is truly unique. The brasserie is situated in a farm dating from 1886. And there’s a lot on offer: from an intimate à-la-carte dinner for two to a buffet or barbecue for a large group.

“Boshotel, Overberg”

Not spectacular, we rented the suite for 2 nights. Basic furniture, fake fireplace, nice bathroom and shower, the tub was in the room and the jacuzzi was not working, nor was the electronic key. Location is ok, middle of the "Utrechtse Heuvelrug" Hotel pretends to be "Green", and is using recycled water, heating and the (not spectacular) breakfast menu is predominanly with Bio products. Will we come back…….mmyeah…because it wasn't that bad for the special winter rate. The Restaurant, just outside the Hotel, wasn't bad as well.

“An eco-friendly hideout in the middle of nowhere!”

Boshotel Overberg is situated in the middle of farms and woods; in a typical Dutch village near Veenendaal. The building has a unique design, eco-friendly; the rooms are simple, but neat and convenient. Ample car parking and a restaurant with very nice surroundings. The menu is not very impressive. Very good facilities, and courteous staff. Stayed there many times. Quite near to a number of camping sites. Excellent place to spend a relaxing weekend; away from civilization ! Buffet breakfast menu is dull.

“Nice hotel”

Good solution if you live in Amerongen or nearby. It is located in the middle of a forest that has wi-fi ok but different players (perhaps all) have no phone signal so watch that if you are traveling on business. Design rooms, Motl nice, clean, quiet.

“Interesting building, lovely location”

After a long and difficult journey, the location of the hotel was relaxing, being on the edge of a small village in woodland. The building is very interesting, being built to be eco friendly and incorporatng a living roof amongst other features. Car parking is plentiful and about 50 metres from the hotel although there is a small area to park adjacent to the entrance ramp for dropping off/ picking up luggage. Reception was friendly and efficient. Our room was clean and tidy with windows and french balcony doors on two sides. It was a little too minimalist for our taste, not even having a rug on the floor. The bed was comfortable. One downside of the rooom was that the external woodern shutters would not lock closed. Luckily, the bedroom curtains were thick and provided a good level of blackout. We had a wetroom / disabled bathroom with rails alongside the toilet and a fold down seat in the shower area. A more powerful shower would have been welcome but as the water spread from the shower was quite extensive, a powerful shower might not be a good idea. Breakfast was excellent - one of the best we had in our tour of Holland and Germany. The buffet was comprehensive and attractively laid out and there was an obvious use of locally sourced products.

“A peaceful retreat”

Amongst farmland and woods the setting is very relaxing. The continues this relaxing feel inside with modern simple furnishing. I had heard that some of the rooms are a bit quirky with a bath tub in the middle of the room. My room was not so quirky but still nice and spacious with a large wet room and a large bedroom over looking the back lawn and giant chess board. As well as playing chess you can hire a bicycle to explore the local woods. There is free wifi in the hotel but signal is very poor. The restaurant next to the hotel has lovely food and I can highly recommend the steak for mains and the choc pud with lime sorbet for dessert. YUM!
