Many places of interest in the area

The location alone makes Hampshire Boutique Hotel - Sebastian's the place to be; especially when you’re on a city trip and want to get to know Amsterdam really well. The hotel is within the canal district, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2010. The Dam and the delightful Jordaan are within walking distance. Other activities include:

Art and culture
Westerkerk and Westertoren are not far from the hotel. Anne Frank Huis is close to Westerkerk. Every year, many visitors visit this historic house to see with their own eyes where Anne Frank stayed in hiding during the Second World War and wrote her world-famous diary. There are a number of fascinating places of interest on the Dam, just a few minutes walk from the hotel: Nieuwe Kerk, Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam and Nationaal Monument. At number 51 on the Amstel, there’s the annex of the famous Hermitage in Sint Petersburg: Hermitage Amsterdam. And Amsterdam Museum in the former Burgerweeshuis is very special. The museum is located between all the shops on Kalverstraat and has beautiful inner courtyards, a gallery full of schuttersstukken (paintings) and a well-stocked museum shop.

Children
A trip along the canals of Amsterdam is great to do all year round. There are lots of boat companies in the area, so you can easily step on a tour boat. But you can of course also hire a small boat or pedal boat and explore the canals yourself. TunFun is an indoor playground for children from 0 to 12 in a former car tunnel in the heart of the city. The history of shipping comes to life in children’s exhibitions in Het Scheepvaartmuseum, such as the fairy-tale underwater world of Matje & Roosje and Circus Zee for children up to 6 years.

Shopping
When it comes to shopping, there are possibilities enough. You can go to Magna Plaza shopping centre close to the Dam, to Haarlemmerstraat or Haarlemmerdijk or De 9 Straatjes, where you can find unique and original shops, lunch rooms and restaurants. Large, well-known shopping streets such as Kalverstraat, Leidsestraat and P.C. Hooftstraat are also not far from the hotel.

Markets
If you’re in Amsterdam over the weekend, the organic farmers’ market on the Noordermarkt from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. is highly recommended. You can visit the farmers’ market on Haarlemmerplein every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Every Monday, there’s the famous textile market and vintage and antique market on Westerstraat and Noordermarkt from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

“Superb hotel competes with Amsterdam sightseeing”

This is a very rare hotel -- one of the very few I've experienced where I would almost prefer to stay in the room that go out and see the city I'm visiting. The staff, the location, decor, wifi, ambience all made it an awesome experience. It's really nice to stay in a hotel that isn't a rip off. It is on a small typical Amsterdam street and canal. A much better location and experience than staying at a big chain such as the Hilton Doubletree near Centraal Station, which is a nice hotel, but without personality and overpriced. Also, I felt comfortable staying there alone as a woman, which I cannot say for all hotels.

“Clean, Friendly in great location”

We arrived by train and were easily able to walk to this hotel with our rolling suitcases away from the hustle & bustle of the Central Station area. Overlooks the lovely Keizersgracht and close by the Jordaan. The staff was friendly and helpful right from the start of our entrance to the front desk and throughout our 6 night stay. Rooms are spacious enough, bathroom small but adequate and view over the canal memorable. I would recommend walking as much as possible to really see the canals and their beautiful facades. We walked to the Rijks from here and easily walked to Central Station to catch trams all over the city.

“Opposing sentiments”

We stayed at Sebastian's for 3 nights, having stayed in the Museumplein district for our first 3. A well positioned hotel, with exceptionally friendly front of house staff who rightly deserve praise. First impressions are vital and we were welcomed as that unique and special guest by them. Such a good staff ethic would reflect the owners attitude of the importance of their guests, so all credit to the Toren owners who also address any feedback timeously. A great list of recommended restaurants etc in Amsterdam follows this ethos through, and those restaurants we did try from this list surpassed our expectations. As initially requested when booking, we were given a quiet room high up, with a lovely garden outlook to boot. From my experience on my travels, these requests are often ignored by reservation employees. So why only 3 out of the potential 5 then? The interior of the hotel is very dark in a 'burlesque nightclub' type theme and coming in from daylight, oppressive. This club theme runs throughout the hotel, from the 'booth' reception, to the dining/bar area, passageways and into the rooms. We found returning to this nightclub type interior after exploring the Jordaan an unappealing thought. From the previous reviews it does not appear to concern many people, although some do mention it. As the accommodation is important to me as part of my overall travel experience, it would be the reason I would not return to Sebastians.
Owner Response of Hampshire Boutique Hotel - Sebastian's
Dear Guest, As the owners of the Sebastian’s Hotel we find it important to address this review personally. Although we are glad to see that the guest was happy with the service and staff we are saddened that this guest didn’t feel happy with the décor resulting in a poor review in general. Usually our guests are properly informed about the style that we established which intentionally is a bit funky and different. At Sebastian’s we do indeed have a unique, warm and funky design which sets us apart from other hotels, this is usually the main reason guests find us and return to stay with us. We only wish to be completely clear with our guests in regard to all details of the hotel including the design at Sebastian’s, as it is by no means standard or ordinary. There are many hotels in Amsterdam that offer a more neutral colour scheme and we understand that we might not be the option for all of our guests. We hope that guests can see photos and impressions of our hotel on our website and on all booking engines before deciding to book Sebastian’s. If our design is ever portrayed incorrectly online in turn giving guests a surprised feeling we wish to update this immediately. We never wish for guests to feel uncomfortable or not be excited to return to the hotel because of the décor. Especially since we feel that this could have been prevented before and during the booking process. As we strive for guests to be in total comfort we hope that we can be in contact with this guest to find out how the design was not portrayed clearly. We want to be sure that all guests are aware of the unique design of Sebastian’s so that our guests will only feel happily with the ambiance , colours and the décor. With our warmest regards, Eric and Petra Toren

“One of the best”

As a base for 3 nights, my stay at Hotel Sebastian's ensured a wonderful time in Amsterdam. Not only was the location excellent with public transport spots and great shopping nearby, it was quiet and enchanting to be right next to the canal. And I can only underline what other reviewers have said about the staff - they really were so helpful and lovely; always a pleasure to go to breakfast or the reception. I didn't have a canal view but that was no problem. My room was large with a beautiful bathroom and blissful bed. They provided a kettle on request; perfect for a cup of tea in the morning and much needed after a day's exploration of this amazing city. Travelling on my own, I felt completely comfortable and at ease. I would certainly go back and highly recommend this delightful hotel.

“Good”

The hotel is in a nice location. Amsterdam is very small, so you get everywhere walking or biking. Our room was big, but a little dark, and also it has stairs at the entrance of the hotel and to get to the room, so be aware of that if you have a heavy luggage or a physic problem. The decoration was nice, special. The breakfast was a typical continental freaskfast. The service was ok.

An oasis of peace in the middle of the city centre

Hampshire Boutique Hotel - Sebastian's is just 10 minutes’ walk from central station. Although you’re in the middle of the city centre, you’ll find an oasis of peace on Keizersgracht. Ideal for you to entirely concentrate on your business. There are also innumerable great, trendy and fine restaurants, lunch rooms and cafés within walking distance of the hotel. The employees’ personal service is fantastic - nothing is too much to ask here. There are also various extra facilities for business guests, such as free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, 24-hour reception, laundry service, own Nespresso appliance in the hotel room and cycle hire.
