Discover the many faces of Groningen and its surroundings.

Hampshire City Hotel – Groningen is the ideal base for a weekend exploring Groningen and its surroundings. It is located close to the central station, so easily accessible with all the city's hotspots nearby. You can hire a bicycle at the hotel and explore the city. Cycle through the centre with its historic warehouses, courtyards and buildings, past the Martini Tower towards the Grote Markt and see Groningen at its best.

The Groninger Museum is an absolute must. The museum has a wonderful collection of its own and also hosts special touring exhibitions. The building is an artwork in itself. It was designed by several well-known architects, including Allessandro Mendini.

There is also lots to see outside the city. You could go to Pieterburen, for example, to visit the seal nursery, or spend an afternoon walking on the tidal marshes. Back at the Hampshire City Hotel – Groningen, it's time to relax in the sauna followed by a lovely meal in one of the local restaurants.

The bicycle city of the Netherlands.

The city of Groningen has won numerous awards. Such as ‘Best City Centre’ and ‘Bicycle City of the Netherlands’. You can experience the latter at Hampshire City Hotel – Groningen by hiring a solid Johnny Loco bicycle and going exploring. Visit the historic buildings and pretty courtyards in the centre of Groningen or cycle into the lively night life on the Grote Markt and Poelestraat. What other activities are there?

Museums
A really fun museum is the Dutch Comics Museum (Nederlands Stripmuseum). Here you will meet comic book heroes like Suske en Wiske, Olivier B. Bommel and Jan, Jans en de kinderen The Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum is not only a wonderful building to look at, it also has an interesting collection about the history of shipping in the northern provinces of the Netherlands. At the Groninger Museum, the Museum Shop and Mendini Restaurant are worth a visit in their own right.

Architecture
The city has a lot of wonderful architecture. The central station or Hoofdstation, for example, was designed by Isaac Gosschalk in 1896 In the centre, the Goudkantoor, a renaissance building dating from 1635, and the many historic warehouses on the Noorderhaven are also worth a visit. Examples of modern architecture in the city include the famous Gasunie building and the urinal by Rem Koolhaas.

Children
Not far from the city is the village of Pieterburen. This is home to the world famous seal nursery founded by Lenie 't Hart who takes care of ill seals. The visitor centre has an exhibition and a film. And if you're in Pieterburen anyway, why not take the family walking on the tidal marshes?

By water

View
The Martini Tower on the Grote Markt is the city's showpiece. You can also climb the 96.8 metre high tower.

“Shame about the mice”

On arrival it seemed nice and pleasant but while waiting for the lift I saw something move on the raised area of the breakfast area. On closer inspection I discovered it was a mouse. The mouse quickly went as I got closer but as soon as I moved away he was right back again. Very confident mouse in my view. It seemed clear there was a number of them. The room was on the fifth floor and I would say basic++. I was lucky as I was only there for work so spent limited time in the room. Had breakfast in the hotel but while the mouse was not seen I remained concerned. Would not want to stay again.
Owner Response of Hampshire City Hotel - Groningen
Dear Pat, First of all I apologize for the inconvenience during your most recent stay and appreciate you brought this to our attention. The hotel is extremely pro-active in its' pest management program for instance: we have a montly scan of our property by a specialized company to prevent any visits of " unwanted guests". However we have been informed by the local government of Groningen that the mice problem is a city wide problem. Due to the public works in the city and also because the temperature is going the mice are looking for a place to hide. Once again I apologize for the inconvenience caused. Please send me your private e-mail or contact details in case you prefer to get any more information. Sincere regards, Sjoukje Witkop Hotel Manager

“Small, good value”

Excellent staff, reasonably clean but TINY rooms - about 1/2 the size of the rooms at the other Hampshire Hotel located 2 blocks away. Don't get the two confused... they are different. This hotel has small, dark rooms, and the other has large airy rooms. This one is, of course, cheaper. Our room rate did not include breakfast, and we found the charge to be rather high, so we did not eat breakfast here. There is a sauna that can be booked for a private visit - needs to be booked ahead of time so it can be heated up. One member of our party used it and was pleased with it. Staff were excellent, very pleasant, and happily stored our luggage when we arrived early, and again when we checked out and wanted to go for lunch without the luggage.

“Cheap and cheerful!”

We found the Hampshire Hotel on the net whilst staying with family in the south of Holland and chose this one because of a special offer that they had at the time - 2 nights accom, 2 breakfasts and a meal at a nearby restaurant. We didn't expect much for the price, which was very cheap - won't mention it now as it may not be available still - but it exceeded our low expectations by quite a bit. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the rooms small but adequate with good bathroom facilities, air-con and there is free internet which worked fine. It is centrally located - walking distance to the Grote Markt for many restaurants, cafes, bars and off course shops. The meal that was included in our deal was from a restaurant practically next door and turned out to be tapas style - my favourite way of eating. A generous platter arrived which we thought was the meal, but then another platter of more substantial tit bits arrived - wonderful! A must to visit in Groningen is the Groningen Museum - fabulous building and good displays of art with a cafe to rest in inbetween cultural experiences. All in all our stay was great and I will stay here again when we visit in the future.

“Very good 3 star City Hotel”

Like others, I can't see why there are any reasons to fault this 3 Star hotel - I only stayed one night en route from Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport) to Delfzijl as it was a convenient stopoff allowing for the shot trip in the morning. The hotel is clean, staff friendly, and facilities good (bar etc.). As with most City centre hotels the rooms are not very spacious but functionally adequate but more importantly clean. I was in room 13 which is down in the basement which as you'd expect did not have a view - just a window looking out at a brickwall - as a result the rating has dropped a star. Also there's no GSM (Mobile Phone Service) in the basement rooms but free 'low speed Internet' was sufficient for Skype calls and to check emails. The bar in the lobby was quiet and as I'd arrived a bit late - 9 45 pm - the menu was very limited - a cheese and ham toastie was all that was on offer. Un be known to me the city centre is full of restaraunts and when I visit again, I will venture out and try a Thai or local one which there are many. A good Trip Advisor 4 stars but not enough to score 5.

“Comfortable Hotel in Center of Groningen”

We recently spent four days in the city of Groningen and needed a hotel in the center of the city that was accessible by car and had parking space. The Hampshire City Hotel met our needs; it is a short walk from the Grote Markt (center of town) and offers parking in a private garage within easy walking distance. The hotel is modern with an open reception area, the rooms are on the small side but well appointed (although the closet shelves are rather high!), the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the price was right. The hotel does not have a restaurant, but there are many "eetcafé's" in the area. The breakfast buffet offers good selections and was included in the room charge.
