Discover the many faces of Groningen and its surroundings.

Hampshire City Hotel – Groningen is the ideal base for a weekend exploring Groningen and its surroundings. It is located close to the central station, so easily accessible with all the city's hotspots nearby. You can hire a bicycle at the hotel and explore the city. Cycle through the centre with its historic warehouses, courtyards and buildings, past the Martini Tower towards the Grote Markt and see Groningen at its best.

The Groninger Museum is an absolute must. The museum has a wonderful collection of its own and also hosts special touring exhibitions. The building is an artwork in itself. It was designed by several well-known architects, including Allessandro Mendini.

There is also lots to see outside the city. You could go to Pieterburen, for example, to visit the seal nursery, or spend an afternoon walking on the tidal marshes. Back at the Hampshire City Hotel – Groningen, it's time to relax in the sauna followed by a lovely meal in one of the local restaurants.

Bommel and Jan, Jans en de kinderen The Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum is not only a wonderful building to look at, it also has an interesting collection about the history of shipping in the northern provinces of the Netherlands. At the Groninger Museum, the Museum Shop and Mendini Restaurant are worth a visit in their own right.

Architecture
The city has a lot of wonderful architecture. The central station or Hoofdstation, for example, was designed by Isaac Gosschalk in 1896 In the centre, the Goudkantoor, a renaissance building dating from 1635, and the many historic warehouses on the Noorderhaven are also worth a visit. Examples of modern architecture in the city include the famous Gasunie building and the urinal by Rem Koolhaas.

Children
Not far from the city is the village of Pieterburen. This is home to the world famous seal nursery founded by Lenie 't Hart who takes care of ill seals. The visitor centre has an exhibition and a film. And if you're in Pieterburen anyway, why not take the family walking on the tidal marshes?

“Ideal for purpose”

Stayed here for 2 nights recently. Close to centre of town (Ideal for where I was working). Check-in was quick & efficient, room was clean & tidy and had most of the things required for a business stay (inc free Wi-Fi and a safe box in the room). Bathroom also clean & tidy. Would have preferred a double bed, rather than the two singles pushed together, but this seems quite a common thing in Europe nowadays. Breakfast was continental buffet style, with a few hot options too. Good choice, well prepared and operated until quite late at weekends (also v. handy). Didn't eat in the restaurant at night, but there's a small bar snack menu available, which again works well if you're returning to the hotel late at night. Would certainly recommend.

“Convenient but not great”

Back for a second time and the saving grace of this hotel is the proximity to where I have to see a client. They do though have an arrangement with the very secure Holland Casino car park opposite which means it is cheaper to park. The sauna and Steam Room need to be booked before you can use them and they are not very hot. Next I'll stay in another Groningen hotel

Dear Chris, Thank you for your visit to our hotel, and taking the time to write this review. I'm sorry to read that the sauna wasn't warm enough at the moment that you have booked the sauna. Next time we will turn on the sauna earlier so it has more time to reach the proper temperature. We do hope to see you again sometime so we can do everything to make your stay as comfortable possible. Kind regards, Anita Bosgraaf Front Office Supervisor

“Hampshire Groningen a good value”

My partner and I were looking for a reasonably priced property located near the center, and found the Hampshire to be the perfect place. The staff was welcoming and professional, even asking in which language we preferred to speak. The hotel is well appointed and comfortable, and we especially enjoyed the spacious sauna/steam room, which can be used for free by reservation. Almost every attraction in Groningen proper can be reached within a 15-minute walk, and a bus stop is located 5-minutes away. We plan to visit again this year.

“Hampshire City Hotel - Groningen”

Groningen is beautiful Dutch city - a very bustling college town - Bike traffic has prime use of streets. Friendly town. Second 10 day stay with this property since December 2014, business travel. This hotel is situated at the end of a main very busy thru street across from Casino and within walking distance to just about everything including train station. Prior to first reservation took some time to review on TripAdvisor - colleague had made reservation so I followed suit. At this juncture Pros: Location Staff - made gracious attempts to rectify issues Starting some modest renovations Cons: Very true in previous posts - internet is insufficient for business use. Drops often, sometimes an hour or two. Experienced 30 hour outage due to weather. Rooms have some void areas. Rooms are old, dank, dark - outdated. Do Not use in room hot pot - incredible smell arises from water reservoir. Science experiment. Refrigerator (small, old) available only in "suite" not a true suite but a bit larger than standard room. Noise - in December students had mostly left - noise on street on Saturday nite only. Last visit January 2015 - lost of street noise, constantly thru night. From night life, casino, trucks, etc. Breakfast - not inclusive, does not start until 7 am (not possible for business hours) - overpriced but convenient if you have the time. Other breakfast options possible. At this juncture - would not stay at this property again for business travel.
