A hotel with a rich history

Hampshire Hotel - Amsterdam American has a rich history. In 1882, the first hotel guests stayed at this unique location on Leidseplein. The current building dates from 1902 and is a wonderful example of Jugenstil. Right at the centre of this national monument is Café Americain, the hotspot where (hotel) guests and Amsterdam residents enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Step outside the Hampshire Hotel - Amsterdam American and you find yourself at the heart of cultural life in Amsterdam. On and around Leidseplein, there are numerous cafés and restaurants, clubs and theatres. The three most important museums in the city are also within walking distance: the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum.

The famous Café and Bar Americain

The famous Café and Bar Americain

Café Americain
A phenomenon in Amsterdam and far beyond. Café Americain is a well known meeting place for writers, artists, performers and locals. In the beautiful art deco interior, you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner. In fine weather, the spacious terrace is a beautifully sheltered spot.
Every day between 14.00 and 17.00 o'clock, you can enjoy Afternoon Tea with sandwiches, scones, bonbons, biscuits and a pot of special tea. Every  first Sunday, there is a Jazz Brunch with live music, good food and a relaxed lazy Sunday feel. =

Bar Americain
No hotel bar in Amsterdam has welcomed such an eclectic mix of international stars as Bar Americain. Many famous guests have ordered a Lemon Jack or Sunset Amore here. Because cocktails are a house speciality. Not surprisingly, the bar is a hot spot for cocktail loving Amsterdam. Shaken or stirred, it's your call.

“Nice hotel in good location. Excellent staff.”

We stayed here for 3 nights and we enjoyed our stay. The hotel is quite classical and is well furbished. There is a 'Lovers' canal cruise stop right outside the hotel door. Our room was quite large. For the amount we were paying we would have expected to have had dressing gowns, but none were provided. Sadly the TV was at a 90 degree angle to the bed. Normally we wouldn't watch TV but my team were playing an important match and I had time to watch half of it before we went out for dinner. It gave me a crick in my neck.

“Hampshire - American - Amsterdam - Great location 2-3-star accomodation”

The location of this dated hotel is great. Right in the middle of the Leidseplein. Great for exploring, shopping and wining and dining in the lovely City of Amsterdam. The staff is very friendly and the cosy bar is a great meeting point for tourists as well as locals. The accommodation is like an Ibis or Arcade Hotel (2-3 star) Small rooms and a bit dated. Like you can expect in may cities like London and / or NYC. For a payable City break it is ok !

“Beautiful hotel, excellent service, rather disappointed with the room”

We have stayed at the American Hotel several times over many years. We return because of the atmosphere and service. It is on Leiseplein, a busy square, and easily reached from Centraal Station by tram. The restaurant and bar service is attentive and efficient. The staff are experienced and good at their jobs - they will always try to help you, with a smile. They all speak English but if you can speak a little Dutch, ('please' and 'thank you') it's certainly appreciated. The food's great - fantastic breakfast! The only slight issue we had was with the room, where the bed had seen better days and the tv remote was temperamental. It could be that the room was due for a makeover, I don't know, but it did not seem up to the same standard as the rest of the property. Overall, another enjoyable stay in Amsterdam and we'd certainly return to the American Hotel.

“Great location, great service, super breakfast”

Location: right in the center, close to the great museums, right along a canal, super close to outstanding public transportation... Great service: the concierges and desk staff were particularly helpful, had great suggestions, solved little problems, sought answers to puzzling questions. As for breakfast: a feast every morning: either traditional American with eggs, pancakes, etc, and superb bakery goods, including croissants and Danish pastries... just watch the calories!!! Our room overlooked the canal, it was large and comfortable: the only "complainable" aspect was the extremely tiny bathroom which was not heated -- we were there when temperatures were quite cool, so it was not easy. Finally, the price was a great value... book so that breakfast is included if you are a breakfast eater!!! Finally, the American Cafe restaurant, at the hotel, was excellent.

“The staff merits the fourth star!!!”

This hotel is a little long in the tooth and could use updating all over. Our first impression was underwhelming. This review has pluses and minuses. The hotel facility is really more like a 3 star...a bit dated, a simple unadorned lobby, little staircases everywhere, dark hallways, etc. The quality of the staff is superb, better than we have experienced at almost any hotel, including 5 stars, anywhere. The front desk staff, and we interacted with 3 people by the time we finally got settled in our room, was warm, welcoming, helpful and gracious. We arrived from California at 10:30 a.m., and had requested an early check in, but completely understood that our room wasn't yet available. We did a pre-check-in and were directed to the mezzanine (again dated but comfortable and a view over the canal) to relax and wait. After an hour there we went to the restaurant for lunch then back to check-in at 1:00p.m. And our room was ready. Also learned that the fellow who checked us in had looked for us in the mezzanine around noon, once the room was ready. The bell staff/concierges were efficient, knowledgable and warm. Our bellman/concierge was Driss, caring, kind and accommodating, who moved our luggage to our first room (rejected) then to our second room. After carefully listening to the type of restaurant we were seeking for dinner he recommended D'Antica, and it was spot-on perfect. We sought out Driss with other requests (hotel safe), but if he wasn't there the others were as helpful also. And there was never a wait for front desk or bell services. A five-star staff, really. We booked a jr. Suite with a canal view for 4 nights. The first room they gave us was #114, a loft. It was spacious and updated with a huge flat screen TV and a tiny balcony, but it had a steep staircase to the loft and the bathroom was downstairs. It was also very dark and depressing. Not at all similar in any respect to what is shown on the website. We immediately asked for a different room and the front desk took only about 10 minutes to move us to room 307. This room is spacious, on one level, and acceptable, but it also doesn't look at all like what is shown on the website...it is really just a large, king size room with a large sitting area and a fake fireplace. The good news is that everything functions perfectly. The heating system is quiet and efficient, the shower is good, the bathroom is small but very functional with plenty of storage. There is a Nespresso machine and also an electric tea kettle, which we really appreciated. The bed was wonderful and the linens were crisp and luxurious. This room was also very, very quiet with a lovely view over the canal...definitely worth the extra money for the canal view! Friends of ours arrived the following day, having booked exactly as we had and were given room 107, identical to ours and they are very satisfied. The restaurant is fantastic, again with too notch personnel! The bar is lively and fun as well. Nice to have these right in the hotel.
