A weekend break in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Hampshire Hotel – City Terneuzen is the ideal address for a weekend break in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Thanks to its central location, there are plenty of options. You can walk or cycle in the nature areas. Cross over the Belgian border to absorb the culture in Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges. And back to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen to explore the fortified towns of Hulst and Sluis. Sluis is also a special culinary town with three top restaurants, including Oud Sluis run by chef Sergio Herman.

The centre of Terneuzen is easy to reach by car or bus from the Hampshire Hotel – City Terneuzen. There are some lovely walks through Oud-Terneuzen, whose rich history is reflected in the old houses and streets, the arsenal building and the sixteenth century fortifications. At the Portaal van Vlaanderen, you can view the famous lock complex of the harbour city from nearby. And on Scheldeboulevard, you have a wonderful view over the Western Scheldt.

Peace, the beach and culinary hotspots

Zeeuws-Vlaanderen stands for peace, sea and beach. It is an area with lots of history, which is reflected in fortified towns like Hulst and Sluis. The many culinary hotspots add to the atmosphere. The municipality of Sluis alone has numerous exquisite restaurants. For example, Oud Sluis (3 star), La Trinité Sluis (1 star) and De Kromme Watergang (1 star). As you can see: this is the place for gourmets. But the surroundings of Terneuzen also have lots to offer nature lovers. In various nature areas, you can take long walks or cycle tours. Other tips:

There are some lovely walks trough the town of Terneuzen. Past the Arsenaal (military building dating from 1833), the Willibrordustoren, the (old) Town Hall on Noordstraat, the Moffenschans (sixteenth century farmhouse) and the Monument De Vliegende Hollander.

At the Portaal van Vlaanderen, you can view the sea lock complex of Terneuzen. In the months of July and August, there are daily tours here. In Vlissingen, there is the lovely muZEEum, where you can experience the significance of the sea in the stormy history of Zeeland. Historisch Museum de Bevelanden is the treasury of the cultural heritage of North and South Beveland.

On a rainy day, the children (and adults) can enjoy the indoor play paradise de Toversluis. Also fun: the subtropical swimming paradise Scheldorado. For a meeting with kids' heroes K3, Bumba and Mega Mindy, you can visit one of the Plopsaland theme parks in Belgium.

Every June, Terneuzen celebrates the Havendagen, focusing on the harbour and the water. Markets, live performances and a fair are always part of this festivity. The big jazz festival Schelde Jazz is also held in June.

Half an hour's drive from the hotel are the most famous sandy beaches of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen: Groede, Nieuwvliet and Cadzand.

“Good Value”

The hotel is not in walking distance of the city, but the rooms are spacious, the beds comfortable and the furniture and fittings quite adequate. Breakfast was included in our tariff. We also had a very nice dinner in the restaurant. We felt that this hotel was good value for the money paid,

“Middle of the road”

So the staff here were friendly, helpful, patient, and overall a joy to stay with - we really had a great small-town feel with them. Everything we asked, they answered without hesitation. We did have a lot of confusion with the reservation, as we had booked through an online site, and it was miscommunicated to the hotel - but they sorted it for me very quickly. Breakfast was really nice too, with lots of choices, great coffee, and everything was very tasty. It was open for a large enough time frame to not hurry anyone, and plenty of seating inside and out. Nothing to complain about there or in the bar. The decor in the lobby and restaurant area were classy, but not overdone, and there was a decent sized car park. So that was all great, but I have no concept of what was going on with our rooms. The beds were really uncomfortable and they didn't have any double beds, so they pushed beds together for us. There was a phone in our room, but it wasn't plugged in. The TV was only about 8 inches, and there were 2 hangers in the closet. It had an additional room attached that was marketed as an efficiency apartment. It was really weirdly set up and not clean, so we did not really use the other room for more than storage of our bags. The bathroom wasn't super clean, and unfortunately the rooms were in bad shape - holes in the walls and stains on things. Having great big balcony was a plus though, and made the room quite comfortable temperature wise. So overall, it was a reasonable price, but a really low quality room!

“NOT my favorite place”

Stayed here while visiting Terneuzen for a week. When I arrived, there was no one at the front desk. Finally showed up about 10 min later. What was particularly aggravating is those in the restaurant could see I was waiting, and did nothing (I guess the "it's not my job" syndrome???) When I did get my room, the stairs and hall carpet appeared to not have been swept or vacuumed, well, in the last several months. I could visibly see dirty on the carpet (and I never really considered myself to be picky about these things at all). At least the beds were fairly comfortable, though it would be nice to have something other than a thick blanket during the summer. The balcony had stairs going to the floor above? Fire escape? Seemed odd none the less. What topped it off is I went to eat at the restaurant and they almost didn't let me in without reservations. Might have been more willing to accept that if they had been busy.... They do have a hot food breakfast that is ok. Bacon, eggs, toast, yogurt, and cereal available. That was ok. I think I'll try to stay somewhere else in the future, however.

“Another great stay.”

We came again, 'cos this is the best place to get a reasonable room for a good price with great staff. can say that we look forward to coming back. Downtown Terneuzen is not too far away by Taxi. This Hotel caters for all types of client and does tick all the boxes for either a working trip or budget vacation. We will definitely return next year.

“Nice place to stay”

The hotel looks very homely. Staff were very friendly & co-operative. Rooms were quite decently spaced and very clean. Bathroom was very spacious. Free Wifi was available, but only for two hours per day. Food was great in the restaurant. Lunch was after 3, which was a downer. However, we were sent to the Rosaura restaurant which was amazing. So that sort of compensated. My room did not have a balcony. My colleague's did, which was overlooking the street. The hotel was quite peaceful and I would not mind staying there again. However, if you're planning to leave the hotel in the morning, don't wait for a wake-up call, set your own alarm.
