A Valhalla for water lovers

There is so much to enjoy at the Kop van Overijssel, in and around Steenwijk. If you enjoy greenery and water, the area surrounding Hampshire Hotel - de Eese is a Valhalla. The forests, meadows, fens, De Woldberg nature reserve and De Eese country estate are a stone’s throw away. The well-known water village Giethoorn, the Venice of the Netherlands, and National Park Weerribben-Wieden are close by. What else is there to do in the surrounding area?

How did the Giethoorners live a hundred years ago? Where did they live and what did an average working day look like? You can see and experience it in the Museum ‘t Olde maat Uus in Giethoorn. A little further down the road is Museum De Oude Aarde, with one of the most beautiful collections of minerals and fossils in our country. You can find contemporary prints and glass art in Museums Vledder in Vledder.

This historic town is the tourist centre of north-west Overijssel. Stroll along city canals and walls that originate from the time of the Eighty Years’ War. Take a seat on the longest sofa in the world: the 75-metre sofa by artist Jan Krikke. And walk on towards Rams Woerthe villa with its public park.

Walking and cycling
De Woldberg nature reserve and De Eese country estate both border the hotel. In these beautiful areas, with varied forests and fens, there are all kinds of cycle and footpaths. In the National Park Drents-Friese Wold you can walk along forests, heathland, shifting sands and grassland. This is one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands: as large as 12,800 football pitches.

All aboard
Hire a boat or punt and enjoy the peace on the water and beautiful nature around you, both in the village of Giethoorn as well as in National Park Weerribben-Wieden.

Step inside for regional delicacies

Step inside for regional delicacies

The Hampshire Hotel – de Eese restaurant is open all day. An extensive breakfast buffet is served here for hotel guests. From early morning until late evening you can step inside for coffee, tea or cappuccino, with or without a regional delicacy. The kitchen is open from 12:00 noon for lunch, a mid-afternoon snack or dinner. The patio enclosed by the countryside landscape is particularly pleasant in good weather.

You can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine in the hotel’s Brasserie, and can choose from dinner à la carte or plate service. The atmosphere in the Brasserie is relaxed and informal - a real living room feel. The hotel’s bar/lounge has flexible closing times. You’re more than likely to end up here at the end of the day or evening for that last drink.

Last weekend me and my boyfriend had a wedding in Steenwijk. We decided to stay a night at Hamsphire hotel De Eese. They were all very kind and helpful. Because of the wedding we didn't know what time we would be back. We've received a code to open the door if it was closed already. The room was bright and clean. The breakfast was good. Again all the personel was helpful and friendly. The only thing was that there whas someone having a quite loud converstaion under our window.

“A place to remember”

I can recommend this hotel to everyone who enjoys nature, a good nights sleep and a nice breakfast to start the day. You can open the windows in the standad rooms, which is definitely a plus, since I don't like air conditioning. The hotel is located somewhat off the next main road, surounded by forest. Hiking, biking, whatever you plan to do, this is definitely one of the best places to go value for money wise. We were there for the Music Festival in the City. Unfortunately we did not have the time to enjoy the ammenities like sauna and pool. The service and staff is very good, if not exceptional! This is a big Thank you to the Staff. We will be back!

“Excellent staff.”

We arrived at this hotel wet through, muddy and fed up. We cycled here from Elburg and hit the weather. We came into reception and were immediately offered towels and coffee. Room was not ready as we had arrived early but they did their best for us and did let us in it half an hour earlier. I think they either all felt sorry for us or worried about their image!! I dont think it was the latter. Could not fault the staff at all very friendly and helpful. Lovely bathroom and hotel was eco-friendly. Lots of hot water but only shower and i could have really done with a bath but hey-ho. Rode into Steenwijk and ate at a Chinese that I wouldn't really recommend. Hotel set in woods and all rooms seemed to be peacefully located. breakfast was very nice and welcome on a Sunday morning especially as the whole of Netherlands seems to be closed on Sundays. Very clean rooms, excellent t.v. selection even if set was old fashioned. Easy to adjust heating.

“Minimally maintained and nothing to get excited about”

The Hampshire Hotel de Eese is located on a quiet spot in the woods about 1 mile from the N855 exit of highway A32. To reach the hotel you need your own transport. Built in 1991 the Hampshire Eese offers 56 rooms. The hotel itself is outdated, minimally maintained and nothing to get excited about. The hotel apparently hosts Dutch Joe Average who goes for a low-cost accommodation. The hotel was partly renovated in 2005 and rooms are basically OK. We had a room with renovated private bathroom, room and bathroom were clean. Beds are OK. The window could be opened but has no mosquito screen. Free parking in front of the hotel. The indoor swimming pool is very poorly maintained and was not-heated during our visit in June, probably to cut costs. The sauna was minimal and in bad shape: a true never-come-back-show. Staffs are friendly amateurs. The food in the Brasserie was between average and bad. Better eat-out somewhere else. The buffet-style breakfast was OK. We would recommend this countryside hotel to anyone who seeks simple accommodation in a quiet environment and doesn't care about quality.

The green landscape around the hotel and the easy accessibility by car (just 5 minutes from the motorway) are absolute plus points for a business stay. But to make it even more pleasant, Hampshire Hotel - de Eese offers extra facilities such as free Wi-Fi, free parking and free use of the swimming pool, tennis court and sauna.

The hotel is extremely suitable for business meetings. Company training courses, brainstorming sessions, meetings and company dinners: everything is possible.
