Ideal hotel for a weekend in Groningen

Hampshire Hotel – Groningen Centre is ideal for a weekend in Groningen. It is situated on the edge of the historic city centre, so rather close to all the conviviality but not in the middle of all the bustle. You step out of the hotel and within a few minutes you arrive at the most attractive shops, convivial cafés, fantastic restaurants and interesting sights. One of the things you simply have to have on your list is the Groninger Museum. The much-discussed building from Italian architect Alessandro Mendini and three guest architects is worth a visit in itself.

Groningen has a lot to offer. You can climb the 97-metre-high Martinitoren, wander along the historic almshouses, canals and warehouses and enjoy a performance in the Stadsschouwburg or De Oosterpoort. If you want to leave the city, you can walk and cycle in the polders and nature reserves just outside Groningen. Here you can find impressive Mediaeval castles, such as the Fraeylemaborg. You can shop till you drop, enjoy café terraces and wander through the university city. Other suggestions for a day in Groningen and surroundings:

Museums
It can’t go unmentioned: the Groninger Museum. Be surprised by the special exhibitions and impressive art collection. In Brugstraat there are two historic buildings from the fifteenth century: the Gotische Huis and the Canterhuis. These buildings are the home of the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum, where the history of shipping from the Middle Ages comes to life. To meet your comic strip heroes, you can visit Het Nederlands Stripmuseum Groningen; from Donald Duck to Jan, Jans en de Kinderen; they are all there.

Places of interest
If you walk up the steps of the 97-metre-high Martinitoren, you are rewarded with a beautiful view across the city, and with good weather even across the whole province. The city also has some thirty almshouses, the courtyards of every one being an oasis of peace. The former monastery Prinsenhof is an impressive complex situated in the Martinikerkhof. At the rear is the Prinsentuin, a beautiful renaissance garden full of roses and herbs.

Children
In Familiepark Nienoord near castle Nienoord children can play in the playground, or take a ride on a horse, tractor or scooter. Another fun amusement park for the kids is Sprookjeshof in Zuidlaren. It has a playground, children’s farm, gnome-themed clamber castle and a covered section, so it’s also a great day out if the weather’s poor.

Cycling
The province of Groningen offers stunning cycle trips. A beautiful trip is the Hoogeland discovery route (20 kilometres) through North Groningen. The trip to Hoornse Plas is also beautiful. The hotel has bicycles for hire.
