Ideal hotel for a weekend in Groningen

Hampshire Hotel – Groningen Centre is ideal for a weekend in Groningen. It is situated on the edge of the historic city centre, so rather close to all the conviviality but not in the middle of all the bustle. You step out of the hotel and within a few minutes you arrive at the most attractive shops, convivial cafés, fantastic restaurants and interesting sights. One of the things you simply have to have on your list is the Groninger Museum. The much-discussed building from Italian architect Alessandro Mendini and three guest architects is worth a visit in itself.

Groningen has a lot to offer. You can climb the 97-metre-high Martinitoren, wander along the historic almshouses, canals and warehouses and enjoy a performance in the Stadsschouwburg or De Oosterpoort. If you want to leave the city, you can walk and cycle in the polders and nature reserves just outside Groningen. Here you can find impressive Mediaeval castles, such as the Fraeylemaborg. And after your busy day you can unwind in the cosy lounge at Hampshire Hotel – Groningen Centre.

Historic city centre of Groningen

Hampshire hotel – Groningen Centre is on the edge of the historic city centre of Groningen. Just a stone’s throw away you will find a host of interesting, fun and attractive things to do. You can shop till you drop, enjoy café terraces and wander through the university city. Other suggestions for a day in Groningen and surroundings:

Museums
It can’t go unmentioned: the Groninger Museum. Be surprised by the special exhibitions and impressive art collection. In Brugstraat there are two historic buildings from the fifteenth century: the Gotische Huis and the Canterhuis. These buildings are the home of the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum, where the history of shipping from the Middle Ages comes to life. To meet your comic strip heroes, you can visit Het Nederlands Stripmuseum Groningen; from Donald Duck to Jan, Jans en de Kinderen; they are all there.

Places of interest
If you walk up the steps of the 97-metre-high Martinitoren, you are rewarded with a beautiful view across the city, and with good weather even across the whole province. The city also has some thirty almshouses, the courtyards of every one being an oasis of peace. The former monastery Prinsenhof is an impressive complex situated in the Martinikerkhof. At the rear is the Prinsentuin, a beautiful renaissance garden full of roses and herbs.

Children
In Familiepark Nienoord near castle Nienoord children can play in the playground, or take a ride on a horse, tractor or scooter. Another fun amusement park for the kids is Sprookjeshof in Zuidlaren. It has a playground, children’s farm, gnome-themed clamber castle and a covered section, so it’s also a great day out if the weather’s poor.

Cycling
The province of Groningen offers stunning cycle trips. A beautiful trip is the Hoogeland discovery route (20 kilometres) through North Groningen. The trip to Hoornse Plas is also beautiful. The hotel has bicycles for hire.

“A very basic hotel”

Stayed here for one night with group of friends. Hotel staffs were very friendly, all 6 of us got the rooms at the same level, level 5. Martini Tower is sharply on our right side. Location is good, closed to shopping area, it's within walking distance. It was very hot inside the room when we checked in. The full glory of sun shined directly to the room, we were obliged to open the window to let some fresh air in and to lower the temp. in the room. Room is small, we were left with little space to walk around in the room. Room is not equipped with water cooker but we had a limitless access to the coffee machine in the dining area, for a or more good cups of coffee/tea/warm chocolate milk. Room is equipped with telephone, television and hairdryer. Bed was ok, a sturdy bed. Bathroom is very simple, with shower only. Shower head needs to be urgently replaced, very poor amount of water came out from it, leaving me stepping out from the shower with some residue of shampoo sticking on my scalp still. Breakfast is not bad, many choices, scramble eggs was too dry though. It's a very basic hotel but everything is kept tidy and clean.

“Exceeds expectations”

Excellent value for money well located serves both the business and leisure traveller I will not stay anywhere else in Groningen! Also good for wedding parties. The all night access to tea and coffee is something that means a lot to me. While I have not tried it, the breakfast offering looks weak and I have not been tempted on any of my half a dozen or more visits

“Basic”

As usual just some pro’s and cons Pro’s • good location • nice lobby area Cons • very basic room • not enough lightening in the room • overall a bit shabby, meeting rooms, rest rooms • the wall plug is to too far from the mirror when dryblowing your hair • the clotheslines (telescopic) is just out of reach even for a person of average height

“Great location but the hotel was a bit disappointing”

We visited Groningen for a weekend. We picked this hotel to stay because it is a 5 minute walk from central station and a 5 minute walk to the city centre. The lobby looks nice and modern, reception was friendly but the room was a bit disappointing. Small room, small tv, small beds, no bath. Also an air freshener was missing in the bath room. There is free wifi. We had booked here also because it said that we could checkout at 5 PM on Sunday but when we got there they told us that we had to pay 20 euros extra for this. Overall it was a very average hotel and I'm not sure if it worth 4 stars. The location is perfect though!
