Ideal hotel for a weekend in Groningen

Hampshire Hotel – Groningen Centre is ideal for a weekend in Groningen. It is situated on the edge of the historic city centre, so rather close to all the conviviality but not in the middle of all the bustle. You step out of the hotel and within a few minutes you arrive at the most attractive shops, convivial cafés, fantastic restaurants and interesting sights. One of the things you simply have to have on your list is the Groninger Museum. The much-discussed building from Italian architect Alessandro Mendini and three guest architects is worth a visit in itself.

Groningen has a lot to offer. You can climb the 97-metre-high Martinitoren, wander along the historic almshouses, canals and warehouses and enjoy a performance in the Stadsschouwburg or De Oosterpoort. If you want to leave the city, you can walk and cycle in the polders and nature reserves just outside Groningen. Here you can find impressive Mediaeval castles, such as the Fraeylemaborg. And after your busy day you can unwind in the cosy lounge at Hampshire Hotel – Groningen Centre.

Historic city centre of Groningen

Hampshire hotel – Groningen Centre is on the edge of the historic city centre of Groningen. Just a stone’s throw away you will find a host of interesting, fun and attractive things to do. You can shop till you drop, enjoy café terraces and wander through the university city. Other suggestions for a day in Groningen and surroundings:

Museums
It can’t go unmentioned: the Groninger Museum. Be surprised by the special exhibitions and impressive art collection. In Brugstraat there are two historic buildings from the fifteenth century: the Gotische Huis and the Canterhuis. These buildings are the home of the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum, where the history of shipping from the Middle Ages comes to life. To meet your comic strip heroes, you can visit Het Nederlands Stripmuseum Groningen; from Donald Duck to Jan, Jans en de Kinderen; they are all there.

Places of interest
If you walk up the steps of the 97-metre-high Martinitoren, you are rewarded with a beautiful view across the city, and with good weather even across the whole province. The city also has some thirty almshouses, the courtyards of every one being an oasis of peace. The former monastery Prinsenhof is an impressive complex situated in the Martinikerkhof. At the rear is the Prinsentuin, a beautiful renaissance garden full of roses and herbs.

Children
In Familiepark Nienoord near castle Nienoord children can play in the playground, or take a ride on a horse, tractor or scooter. Another fun amusement park for the kids is Sprookjeshof in Zuidlaren. It has a playground, children’s farm, gnome-themed clamber castle and a covered section, so it’s also a great day out if the weather’s poor.

Cycling
The province of Groningen offers stunning cycle trips. A beautiful trip is the Hoogeland discovery route (20 kilometres) through North Groningen. The trip to Hoornse Plas is also beautiful. The hotel has bicycles for hire.

“MotoGP 2014”

The hotel is nice and clean. Staff friendly and give you good service. The hotel is locaded a 2-minute walk from the fine "pedestrian" and there are plenty of good resturants. Hotel is a 3-star standard in Europe, but it is nice, clean and quiet. We will come back. PS, if I want to ask for anything, it would be a "mini bar" refrigerator for my wine;-)

“Nice hotel”

We stayed for the motogp and the hotel met all our needs. Good location, about 10 min walk to train station. Room was basic but spacious, comfortable and clean and had great views over the city....although carpets throughout the hotel were stained/dated. Didn't bother paying for breakfast as the room was pricey enough (probably due to the motogp) but we did make good use of the drinks machine and lounge area which was nice to relax in. Staff were friendly and helpful.

“Be aware of parking fines”

The hotel was originally build as a (high rise, 7 or 8 stories) office building for the city's social services & medical services office. And that shows; the inside (the stairwell, the corridors, etc.) still look a bit like an (older) office building. Also, an other result of this re-using of the building for a different purpose, is that the hotel does not have a (un)loading area upfront, which makes it cumbersome for unloading suitcases (unless you double park in the street, in front of the main entry, which we didn't want to do for risking of blocking the traffic). For unloading our luggage, we therefore had to briefly park our car just around the corner, at the Winschoterkade, at the side of the building, where we got a parking fine (in the amount of 60 euro) within the short time when we were waiting at the check-in desk and waiting to receive driving directions to the hotel's parking garage. We were not amused. So a warning for everybody: buy a parking ticket (for 15 minutes or so) in a machine on the street, even if you park your car only very briefly to unload your luggage and check-in!! It turned out that the hotel's garage was full anyway, but a few minutes away there was a large public parking garage (by Q-park). The hotel rooms seem to be quite small, but we were lucky that we had booked a "comfort room" which is a lot bigger (room nr. 607), although a bit sparsely furnished. The aircon worked fine (it was a hot summer night), the beds were fine (we had ordered twin beds), and the bathroom was fine (including a bathtub). The location is good, at easy walking distance to the city's main market square (Grote Markt) and close to a lot of restaurants etc.

“Well located basic hotel for business or leisure”

I have stayed here a few times for business and the car parking, wifi and location are very convenient. The rooms are basic and the breakfast is adequate. For value for money it is a good hotel. I found the walls a bit thin, the neighbour's television was clearly audible. Happily he or she slept early. Car parking is onsite and below the hotel. 10 minute walk to the Grote Markt. The hotel offers bicycles for a small fee which was a handy way to the centre and to the office each day. There is no restaurant or bar in the evenings...plenty of alternatives close by.

“Good value for apartment rental but not the best service”

We stayed in the apartment across the street that is owned by the hotel. It is spacious and clean. The downfall is that there is no housekeeping so you have to arrange to take your own trash out and there are no replacement towels. We stayed for a week and managed okay but you don't get hotel service at all. It's nice to have your own space but have to buy basic things for the apartment like dish-washing liquid and milk and other basics. A heads up that these services aren't included would be nice but worth staying for a group or family. Good space but narrow steps if you are taking luggage upstairs but that is to be expected of Dutch accommodation.
