For a day out in the city, you have numerous options to choose from. The city of Alkmaar is just a ten-minute drive from Hampshire Hotel - Jan van Scorel. Alkmaar is a great place to go shopping, enjoy a sidewalk café or visit a museum, such as the Cheese Museum in the Waag Building. Cheese City Alkmaar & the picturesque village of Bergen

Schoorl and its surroundings have so much to offer. Of course there is the beach, the sea and beautiful dunes, but there's more, too. There are several museums near the hotel, Bergen regularly hosts great events and the city of Alkmaar has hundreds of historic gems to discover. A few tips:

Art & Culture

In Enkhuizen, you can visit the Zuiderzee Museum. Here, you can relive the way life was lived in the past in the Zuiderzee area. History is also brought to life in Fort Kijkduin in Den Helder. You can visit an exhibition about the turbulent past of the fort and Napoleon’s visit to Den Helder. The gigantic aquarium beside the fort is a real surprise and lots of fun, and includes a shipwreck tank, a shark tank, a wave motion tank and a sting-ray tank. The cheese city of Alkmaar has around 400 monuments waiting to be discovered, such as ‘The house with the cannonball’, the Grote St. Laurenskerk and the city hall. So a walk though the city is highly recommended.

Walking

If you like sand dunes, the beach, the sea and the forest, you will love this area. A number of different walks start from the Buitencentrum Schoorlse Duinen sand dune, with a choice of different distances. They include a walk that you can make on your bare feet. This Barefoot path is in the recreational forest next to the Buitencentrum and is lots of fun for children. And there are also plenty of beautiful trips for cyclists, such as the 30-kilometre Schoorl Sand-dune route that starts behind the hotel.

Children

The Holle Bolle Tree in Tuitjenhorn is a wonderful trip for the whole family with three different attractions: an indoor playground, an outdoor playground and a fantastic swimming pool. Another great place to visit for the whole family is the Sea Aquarium in Bergen aan Zee. Here, they have no less than 44 aquariums with hundreds of creatures, including squids, crabs, lobsters, herring, sting-rays, sharks and piranha fish.

Events

Jazz & Sail is an event that attracts thousands of music-lovers to Bergen every year for the superb combination of jazz, sun, sea and beach. Other events include the 10-day Art Festival, the lichtjesavond light festival and the summer art market in Bergen, all well-known in the Netherlands and abroad.

Culinary delights in a homely atmosphere

Culinary delights in a homely atmosphere

Restaurant Kanunnik
Restaurant Kanunnik is where our hotel guests can enjoy a delicious breakfast every morning. The restaurant is open for lunch from 12 noon and for dinner from 6 p.m. In short, this is the culinary heart of Hampshire Hotel - Jan van Scorel. The regularly changing menu is full of surprises and the personnel are very hospitable and professional. The restaurant also serves high-tea every day (please book in advance).

Bar ‘De trappist’
After an active day of walking or cycling through the beautiful sand dunes of Schoorl, you can recover with a delicious aperitif in bar ‘De Trappist’. You can choose from a wide range of special (Texel) beers and other drinks such as special whiskies. And because a drink tastes so much better when accompanied by food, various snacks and smaller dishes are also served. ‘De Trappist’ is open every day from 5 p.m.

Outdoor bar ‘Il Palazzo’
In good weather and bad, you are always welcome in the nicest sidewalk café in Schoorl.  ‘Il Palazzo’ outdoor bar has a unique location, in the dunes and with an excellent view of the beautiful surroundings from the terrace. Enjoy delicious snacks with a glass of cold rosé or other refreshing drinks. In the colder months, this is the place to visit for a glass of mulled wine or hot chocolate with warm apple strudel!

“Great Hotel with fantastic service”

We attended has part of a large group with our vintage cars - the service was fantastic - our room large & clean - food was exceptional with an outstanding level of understanding & service with my wife who is celiac. Nothing appeared to be too much trouble and the only fault I could find is that we managed to drink the bar dry of gin - A well recommended hotel.

“Old style and dirty”

Pick a bigger room and more expensive and you finish with a room under the roof with dirty sofa. Really disappointing and at the end you feel a bit the rip-off concept. The pool is a puddle and the sauna is so badly isolated and fixed that it s quite hard to get a sweat there. They really give the impression to abuse the customer because there are not many options in the region I did the mistake but won t get me twice!!!

Dear A_Max_M, Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Tripadvisor. We are sorry to read that your stay did not entirely meet your expectations. Our housekeeping team will be informed immediately regarding the stain in the sofa. We would hereby like to inform you that our sauna is being renovated at the moment. A new and large sauna will be placed as well as an infrared sauna. We expect to open the new sauna next month. It would be our pleasure to welcome you back in the future. “Cruijff”

Hotel is allright but avoid the small rooms under the roof. It is indeed annoying that they ask top dollar for each and every little service or extra. (Parking: 4 euro! Per day!!). Yes there is a pool but very small. Proudly the hotel advertises near the pool that an ex top soccer players took a swim......if you do that, at least spell his name correct!
Owner Response of Hampshire Hotel - Jan van Scorel
Dear PdW NL, Thank you for your stay and your review on Tripadvisor. You have stayed in a Cosy room, that is indeed our smallest room type. All of the Standard/Charme and Deluxe rooms are located on the lower floors and are more spacious and are even equipped with a terrace or balcony. Thank you for your comment regarding the message at the pool, we will change that right away. Looking forward to welcoming you in the future! “Customer is a cash cow.”

This hotel is all like the TV series: Keeping up appearances. It looks quite good from the outside and the room price seems reasonable, but then it starts: once they got you in, the milking of the cow can begin. This starts with 4 euro per night for parking .....at a hotel not in the mid's of a vast metropolis, but in a small village with ample space around. Then dinner: it's a pretty good restaurant, I give them that, and just below 30 euro for a 3 course dinner would be a fair price indeed if they would not charge 3,50 for a bit of bread , 2,50 for the smallest (2 cl) bottle of water in the world, and 20 euro for a half a liter carafe of house wine. Finally the room. This was situated under the pitched roof with only two skylights high above your head. There's a warning on the room door to close these when you leave, otherwise it might rain in your bed. Come on guys, this is borderline okay for a student dorm or a place for children to play but it's not a serious hotel room, this is an insult. More so because the hotel was 3/4 empty. And still they put us high up this ridiculous attic ! Staff is friendly and professional, by the way, but sure as hell I won't come back.

Dear Cor, Thank you for staying with us and thank you for your review on Tripadvisor. We regret that you did not like your room, you have reserved a Cosy room. This room type is our smallest room type, located on the top floor. If you prefer to have more space and even a balcony, I would recommend you to book a Charme or Deluxe room on your next stay. There is always the possibility to upgrade your room, based on availability during your stay. Thank you for your compliments regarding the food and service in our restaurant. Your comment regarding the price of the drinks are delivered to our Restaurant Manager. Again, I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your experience. “High quality hotel near the dunes”

I stayed in this hotel many times and every timenit's been a pleasure to be there. The rooms are very beautiful with high quality beds. Some rooms have a whirpool. The swimmingpool and saunas are cleaned very well. I have to say; it's one of the high quality hotels I have seen so far. A plus is the location: in front of the dunes, good for a nice walk with spectacular views over the inlands.
