Streams, valleys, rivers and caves

What makes the surroundings of the medieval village of Marcourt so beautiful and special are the numerous streams, forested valleys and the two rivers which run through the lovely landscape: the Ourthe and the Aisne. In Marcourt itself, you will find the Spaanse Huis (Spanish House) dating from 1632, the Saint-Martin church and the Saint-Thibaut chapel dating from 1639. More tips:

Tourist attractions
You can go on underground adventures with a guide in the Grotten van Hotton. These caves form a special, natural heritage in Wallonia, with 6 kilometres of tunnels, 70 metres under the ground. The smallest town in the world is in the Belgian Ardennes: Durbuy. In this little town with its medieval centre, you can visit attractions such as a traditional brewery and the jam factory Saint-Amour. During the summer, a charming tourist train drives around. If you'd like to know more about the Ardennes Offensive during the Second World War, visit the Bastogne War Museum, Musée de la Bataille des Ardennes or the Ardennen Poteau ’44 Museum.

Chlorophylle is the complicated name for a recreational forest in Manhay. Here the kids can have the time of their lives. Take for instance the footbridge which they can walk along in the tops of the trees. At Le Château Féodal, or the medieval castle of Roche-en-Ardenne, there is something to do all year round. In the summer, archers and falconers give a show and medieval weekends and ghost days are organised. The Ardennes are naturally world famous for outdoor pursuits. Along the Ourthe, there are plenty of places to hire a kayak or explore the river on a raft with the whole family.

For golfers used to playing golf in the Netherlands, the courses in the hilly Ardennes are a fantastic experience. The 18 holes in the Five Nations with variations in height up to 46 metres are a great example. Another famous course in the vicinity is Golf de Durbuy.

Culinary enjoyment of seasonal produce

Culinary enjoyment of seasonal produce

In the Hampshire Hotel – La Grande Cure restaurant, you won't find à-la-carte dishes. Every day, you will be surprised by a special menu created by head chef Tim Christensen. You can choose from a three-course or a five-course menu, with or without a wine arrangement. Tim loves to cook with seasonal products from the Ardennes, but also takes inspiration from other cultures. The wine list is carefully composed and contains special wines, including some old vintages: 1985, 1986 and 1947.

We absolutely loved our stay here. The hotel itself was stunning with modern interior and a very romantic dining area. The food and drink at dinner were fabulous - the kind you would expect in a Michelin star restaurant. Breakfast was perfect also with a great selection. The room was lovely with modern decor and the toilet was separate from the sink/shower room which is great for speedily getting ready. The only negative with our room would be that it was a little bit too dark at times but other rooms had balconies which would be lighter so I would book one of these in the future as I'll definitely be back! The staff were so friendly and helpful, providing addresses for our GPS for places we required and remembering the next day to ask at breakfast if we got there ok. A nice personal touch! We stayed here for the Grand Prix in Spa and I am so glad we chose thus hotel as it was perfect. We didn't want to leave! Never got the chance to try the spa in the hotel thus time but next time we definitely will. Cannot wait to return!

“Excellent Stay”

Lovely friendly hotel in quiet location. Staff were very helpful and nothing to much trouble. Breakfast was good and the evening meals special. Only thing missing for us was coffee and tea making in the rooms. A great stay. Thank You.

When I went to La Grande Cure this fall, it had been 4 years since I've been there. The first time I visited the hotel was as a couple with my wife. Back then the hotel only consisted of the auberge and was a lot smaller. Now they have build an additional hotel and spa. The place has grown completely out of proportion. It used to be cosy but now it's more or less clinically dead. The feeling of being in a small establishment in the middle of the nature is completely gone. That being said. There isn't really anything to complain about. The service is very good. The food, although the portions are small (some would say well balanced), is very nice. The rooms are just fine. The shower could use some more power, but the free WIFI is an advantage and the rooms are very clean. On a personal note: This part of Belgium, being a Belgian citizen myself, is very beautiful and has a lot to offer. However... if it is nature one wants to experience, be warned that you can never walk in a forest without hearing a road. And as in the rest of the world: The commercial enterprises rise like mushrooms from the ground. One can find everything in the Ardennes: rafting, rock Climbing, adventure tours, .... I often wonder what is wrong with simply enjoying nature for what it is in stead of consuming it.

First the positives-The hotel staff were very helpful, the room was modern, very clean and the shower was superb. Now the negative-the night we stayed was very humid and the temperature in the room was almost unbearable (very little sleep),i suppose i could have asked for a fan but it was very late in the evening.
