Discover the history of Antwerp

Many interesting places of interest and bustling areas in the historic city centre of Antwerp, are around the corner or opposite Hampshire Hotel O - Kathedral. These include Grote Markt, the 16th Century Antwerp town hall and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal. And there are also many beautiful museums, and great things to do with the children. A few tips:

Museums
ModeMuseum, or MoMu, is located (how fitting) in the heart of Antwerp’s shopping district. This dynamic museum has a collection of more than 25,000 items of clothing, shoes and accessories. Changing and themed exhibitions are composed here regularly. What story does a photograph tell with its images? You’ll learn about this in FotoMuseum Provincie Antwerpen, or FoMu. MAS | Museum aan de Stroom is located in an impressive building in the old port of Antwerp. With permanent and changing exhibitions, this museum tells the story of the city, the river, the port and the world. Famous baroque painter Rubens purchased a building in 1610 which he converted entirely into a home. This building is now a museum, Rubenshuis, that tells the story of his life and work.

Children
One of Europe’s oldest zoos is located in the heart of the city: Antwerpen Zoo. A beautiful, historic place where around five thousand animals live and where there’s lots to see and experience. If the weather turns, you can let the children blow off steam in the indoor playground Pirateneiland. This indoor playground has a pirate ship, climbing and clambering places, slides and games. Aquatopia is also indoors, and is a top attraction with seven wonder water worlds: rain forest, swamp, mangrove, coral reefs, ocean, lab and diving boat. Ecohuis is to the east of Antwerp. In this interactive house you can learn with the whole family how to live in the most environmentally-friendly way possible. You can really take advantage of this.

Special places
Het Steen is a beautiful castle built around 1200. The monument is on the Schelde and is the oldest building in Antwerp. Begijnhof is certainly worth a visit, an oasis of peace in the city with historic small houses, the Sint-Catharinakerkje and a beautiful enclosed garden. The streets around Antwerp central station together form the diamond district, the heart of Antwerp’s diamond industry. You can find precious stones, gold and silver here.

“Great location but overpriced and underwhelming”

You couldn't want for a better location in Antwerp if you want to stay central for a short weekend break, OK sized rooms and decent smellies in the open, more than peek-a-boo shower and the beds - two narrow twins pushed together - were functional but comfortable. However overall the hotel fell short of the 'design/boutique' standards it set itself up to pertain. The interior of the hotel was generally a bit tired which was disappointing - scuffed and chipped paint, broken woodwork in our room and generally didn't feel or smell that fresh. Black walls are one thing to give your establishment an alternative feel but if you can't find anything including light switches, or see anything due to the rooms also being so dimly lit (forget about trying to apply make-up accurately in the dark), alternative loses its charm quite quickly. It served us well for a fun girlie weekend but for anything more special, or if you want genuine quality that matches the price you're paying, I'd recommend elsewhere.

“Noisy, smelly and dark!”

On arrival in the evening the location looks amazing. The hotel is on a beautiful cobbled square with the cathedral lit up right in front of you. Then you enter! The reception is small but fine and staff were nice enough. Then the blackness starts. If you like black then you're in the right place. All the corridors and rooms are painted black apart from one wall/ceiling with a print on it. Difficult to locate light switches and generally just gloomy. And there's a really bad smell in the corridors in the whole hotel the only place that doesn't smell is the reception and breakfast area. Bad drains or something, whatever it is it isn't good. If you are staying the weekend then be warned it's incredibly noisy at night when the pubs and bars close with rowdy people shouting in the street until all hours, then in the morning when that finishes the road sweepers start up. Which are shortly followed by the bells! I really wanted to like this hotel but there was really nothing to like about it. Even the breakfast was overpriced for what it was. Antwerp on the other hand is a beautiful city and i will be back again. I just won't be staying at Hotel O Kathedral the next time

“location, location,location”

If u want to be in the centre of Antwerp, this is the place to be. Quite new (opened in 2012) hotel with slightly trendy look and feel. The Kathedral Rooms (with side-view on the Antwerp Kathedral) are well-sized with the shower/bath facilities in a glass box in the room. So not for shy people if you are sharing the room. I wouldn't call this a design-hotel. More a fair try on being a trendy version of a boutique-style hotel. Or something like that. Whatever :) But it definitely has it's own and unique character. With huge paintings on wallpaper glued to walls and ceilings of the room. And the rest painted black. If you're a gothic-fan; this must be heaven. The breakfastroom downstairs, right behind the reception-desk really felt quite shabby. Not a nice atmosphere to start up your day. And no adequate refill of finished items. If the breakfast is not included go outside; plenty of (better) options just around the corner. It's a great startingpoint for exploring the centre of Antwerp, but don't stick to the centre alone. Do walk to Antwerpen-Zuid (south) where less tourists / more locals hang out in trendy and beautiful shops, cafes and restaurants. And go to Eilandje-area, the revamped harbour-area where the new MAS-museum is located. Some nice bars, coffeespots, restaurants and small shops around. And the Red Star Line museum: a nice museum based in the hangars and building of which millions of Europeans left for America to start a new life there.

“Goth/emo themed!?!”

While the hotel is in the most enviable position in Antwerp, the owners have handed the design and decor over to some awkward teenagers. The entire place is matt black, from the corridors to the rooms. Once you have fumbled your way into the'boudoir'you are immidiately tested in regard to the relationship, if you're comfortable watching, hearing and inevitably smelling your room mate using the ablutions, this is the hotel for you. If on the other hand your not, you are going to feel that you're in some low low budget voyeuristic soft porn film. The location as mentioned is just about perfect, the parking is a short walk away and is €18 for 24 hours. This is later appreciated for being car free. The bars, cafes and restaurants seem to be endless, this is a great place to be but, be sure your travel companion is happy with the setup! This hotel is no good for groups or parties, unless it's swingers!?!
