Discover the history of Antwerp

Many interesting places of interest and bustling areas in the historic city centre of Antwerp, are around the corner or opposite Hampshire Hotel O - Kathedral. These include Grote Markt, the 16th Century Antwerp town hall and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal. And there are also many beautiful museums, and great things to do with the children. A few tips:

Museums
ModeMuseum, or MoMu, is located (how fitting) in the heart of Antwerp’s shopping district. This dynamic museum has a collection of more than 25,000 items of clothing, shoes and accessories. Changing and themed exhibitions are composed here regularly. What story does a photograph tell with its images? You’ll learn about this in FotoMuseum Provincie Antwerpen, or FoMu. MAS | Museum aan de Stroom is located in an impressive building in the old port of Antwerp. With permanent and changing exhibitions, this museum tells the story of the city, the river, the port and the world. Famous baroque painter Rubens purchased a building in 1610 which he converted entirely into a home. This building is now a museum, Rubenshuis, that tells the story of his life and work.

Children
One of Europe’s oldest zoos is located in the heart of the city: Antwerpen Zoo. A beautiful, historic place where around five thousand animals live and where there’s lots to see and experience. If the weather turns, you can let the children blow off steam in the indoor playground Pirateneiland. This indoor playground has a pirate ship, climbing and clambering places, slides and games. Aquatopia is also indoors, and is a top attraction with seven wonder water worlds: rain forest, swamp, mangrove, coral reefs, ocean, lab and diving boat. Ecohuis is to the east of Antwerp. In this interactive house you can learn with the whole family how to live in the most environmentally-friendly way possible. You can really take advantage of this.

Special places
Het Steen is a beautiful castle built around 1200. The monument is on the Schelde and is the oldest building in Antwerp. Begijnhof is certainly worth a visit, an oasis of peace in the city with historic small houses, the Sint-Catharinakerkje and a beautiful enclosed garden. The streets around Antwerp central station together form the diamond district, the heart of Antwerp’s diamond industry. You can find precious stones, gold and silver here.

“Way short of standard expected”

This hotel has many references on various sites, which conflict. The hotel falls short of all the descriptions it puts out that I have seen. It is in an excellent position and the limited staff were polite and friendly. The room I was allocated was painted black with Rubines style women and children in various states of undress. The room had very limited lighting. The "open plan bathroom" (not mentioned on the site I saw before booking) meant there was no privacy whilst bathing or showering. There was no lock on the WC, no extractor fan nor an outside window. There was no fridge or safe. There was one chair which was uncomfortable and if one sat in it for more than 2 minutes one would loose circulation in the legs. Storage for clothes very inadequate. The "double bed" was 2 singles pushed together which moved apart during the night. The breakfast was inadequate and over priced

“so so hotel with good location”

firts the location is perfect if you do not mind some noise from the bars and square in front of hotel, and the wake up from the church bells at 7.30. Price quality i find it expensive for what it is small room painted full black. No A/C or ventilation in the room you just can open the window if you want fresh air but then you have even more noise, No room safe, limited aminities, overall very basic room which is expensive for what it has to offer.

“Right next to the cathedral. No a/c so noisy at night. Everything in hotel is black”

We stayed in the Hotel O Cathedral in July, 2014. Unfortunately, it was also the week of the World Cup - luckily NOT the night they played USA. First, they gave away our family room. They did have a room available for 4 adults (parents and 2 adult children) but glass showers are IN bedroom giving NO privacy. We ended up booking two rooms. Awkward with open glass showers in room unless you're comfortable showering where everyone in room can see you? Second NO a/c and it was unseasonably warm so had to leave windows open. Pubs outside so LOTS of noise late into early morning and then earlier morning worker noise. Entire hotel is painted black inside - walls, floor, ceiling, everything - a bit bleak plus difficult to find things (light switches, etc). The cathedral is illuminated all night so if you have a window facing it, that light doesn't go out. Good location if wanting to be by city centre but other better options. Pay a little more - so worth it for a good night's sleep! Bring mask and ear plugs and you may sleep?

“If you know what you choose it is ok”

You have to be sure that you know what you book. The location can't be better, in the heart of old city , in front of the cathedra!! There are however some BUTS- rooms don't have air conditioning, so you have to open the window to have some fresh air BUT it is very noisy outside . The other BUT is -bathrooms / showers are inside the bedroom! , in some rooms also toilet! so be prepared- no intimacy whatsoever. But..... I loved that place.

“Do you like matte black?”

The description of this place makes it sound rock star cool. Everything is black, retro speakers and turntables adorn the walls of the bar, the rooms are voyeuristic (to your travel companion). We stayed in a room on the top floor, had a cool view of the cathedral from our skylight. (Apparently we were there on a church holiday so they bells delighted our eardrums quite often). In general it was comfortable. Their version of a double be is two pushed together, made up separately, so by morning there's a large divot in the middle. (just make the bed as one and everyone is happy.) The shower was central in the room and all glass. Didn't matter to us, except there wasn't enough glass to keep the water from getting all over the floor in front of the sink. it would be slightly better if the vanity had more space and there was another hook or two to hang stuff up with. (they only provide 2 hangers). Toilet room was small but fine. it got a little hot on the top floor, no temp control we could find, but we were able to open the windows to get the air to flow. (just woke up with a bunch of mosquito bites, but that's just nature) The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location is great, easy to walk to everything (shops, restaurants, bars). it's about a 20 minute walk from the train station, but there's also a subway that stops about 5 minutes from the hotel, very easy. it was cool and different to stay here for a couple nights, much longer than that though and i would've been asking for more conveniences brought up to the room.
