Discover the history of Antwerp

Many interesting places of interest and bustling areas in the historic city centre of Antwerp, are around the corner or opposite Hampshire Hotel O - Kathedral. These include Grote Markt, the 16th Century Antwerp town hall and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal. And there are also many beautiful museums, and great things to do with the children. A few tips:

Museums
ModeMuseum, or MoMu, is located (how fitting) in the heart of Antwerp’s shopping district. This dynamic museum has a collection of more than 25,000 items of clothing, shoes and accessories. Changing and themed exhibitions are composed here regularly. What story does a photograph tell with its images? You’ll learn about this in FotoMuseum Provincie Antwerpen, or FoMu. MAS | Museum aan de Stroom is located in an impressive building in the old port of Antwerp. With permanent and changing exhibitions, this museum tells the story of the city, the river, the port and the world. Famous baroque painter Rubens purchased a building in 1610 which he converted entirely into a home. This building is now a museum, Rubenshuis, that tells the story of his life and work.

Children
One of Europe’s oldest zoos is located in the heart of the city: Antwerpen Zoo. A beautiful, historic place where around five thousand animals live and where there’s lots to see and experience. If the weather turns, you can let the children blow off steam in the indoor playground Pirateneiland. This indoor playground has a pirate ship, climbing and clambering places, slides and games. Aquatopia is also indoors, and is a top attraction with seven wonder water worlds: rain forest, swamp, mangrove, coral reefs, ocean, lab and diving boat. Ecohuis is to the east of Antwerp. In this interactive house you can learn with the whole family how to live in the most environmentally-friendly way possible. You can really take advantage of this.

Special places
Het Steen is a beautiful castle built around 1200. The monument is on the Schelde and is the oldest building in Antwerp. Begijnhof is certainly worth a visit, an oasis of peace in the city with historic small houses, the Sint-Catharinakerkje and a beautiful enclosed garden. The streets around Antwerp central station together form the diamond district, the heart of Antwerp’s diamond industry. You can find precious stones, gold and silver here.

“Single room as a double.”

Nice location and good looking hotel, but: Unfriendly greetings and delays on providing room which was pristine but tiny. Hopefully it wasn't too hot as there was no air in the room, we slept with the window open just above our head which is not the most comfortable. Also, the shower was leaking.

“Suprisingly good but hot!!”

After reading some of the reviews on this hotel, I was a little nervous about what to expect. The location of the hotel is superb, really central surrounded by shops and cafes...oh and the cathedral!! Check in was a little slow and we weren't given a lot of information. When our room key didn't work, we went back to reception and spoke to a different member of staff who just shrugged his shoulders and walked away leaving us slightly aghast! I'm hoping that it was because he didn't speak English! When we finally got in our room, we were pleasantly surprised. Fab view over the square and I liked the different decor of the room. A high note was defo the lovely deep bath. The major downside was that there was no air conditioning and with a busy square below, it made for a hot and noisy night. There are ear plugs provided with each room but my advice would be to go and enjoy the bustling nightlife of Antwerp rather than try and sleep through it!!

“Good location, somewhat strange design hotel”

Best location you can wish. Tip: take a bigger room with cathedral-view! Much better than the very small rooms, especially because everything is black! We liked the decoration. Middle age paintings printed on some walls and ceilings. Open shower with glass in the middle of the room. Like! And yes, black paint goes away easily, at many spots it was a bit damaged, and it easily shows stains. Beds were good as well as the easygoing very young staff. The elevator next to our room made some noise...Good breakfast.

“Not appropriate...”

Possibly the worst hotel I've stayed at. We (a couple) were given a single room which has a tiny bed. The room was so small you could not walk around the bed and could touch the shower glass from the bed and almost reach over to the toilet - it was like staying in a toilet. There was no wall dividing the shower, toilet and the bed - it was completely open. We immediately complained and asked to be moved but they said that they had no more rooms available even though there was a sign in the reception window that said rooms available. We stayed one night and each one of us had to leave the room to give the other privacy while using the toilet and shower. The small room window looked out on to the air conditioning unit which was running the whole time which meant keeping the window closed in what was already an extremely stuffy room. The walls are painted black and there was minimal lighting in the room which meant it was difficult to read. This is such a wrong way to run a hotel - I have never experienced anything like it. On checkout the staff were unfriendly and not sympathetic at all. I hope to spread the word about this hotel far and wide so others don't have the same experience as us.

“Not for sharing”

Great location although that comes with a noise price late at night with people carousing outside. Chic looking hotel - very dark with lots of black paint that on closer inspection could do with a touch up. Room bizarre. Bathroom completely glass so no privacy meaning main window curtains have to be drawn when showering and that nothing is left to the imagination with your partner. Toilet tiny - I mean really tiny - no air vent and barely enough room for your legs when you sit down - it's a little like trying to go in a cupboard. Breakfast good but again in a very dark space. Staff beautiful to look at but not the friendliest.
