Situated in a nature reserve and close to the city

All you have to do is step outside the hotel and you are in the middle of the beautiful nature reserve around Hoornse Meer. Paterwoldsemeer is also close-by, which means there’s more than enough choice for an energetic walk or cycle trip. The centre of Groningen is easy to reach by public transport and car. In short, more than enough to see, do and experience.

If you take the train to the city, you can’t miss the imposing Groninger Museum building. Come and see it from the inside too! There are continuously interesting exhibitions, and the fixed collection is impressive. Cheerful museums are the Nederlands Stripmuseum Groningen with all its comic strip heroes and Muzeeaquarium in Delftzijl with aquariums full of fish, crustaceans and molluscs.
History Historical heritage can be found everywhere. Highlights in the city centre include the Martinitoren, the Hoofdstation, the Goudkantoor and the Prinsenhof. Some 16 of the province’s original 180 stately homes remain. The most well-known four, Fraeylemaborg, Menkemaborg, Landgoed Nienoord and Verhildersum, are open to the public.

In the covered Apekooi (monkey cage) playground children can, you’ve guessed it already, climb and clamber like small monkeys. They are allowed on bare feet in ’t Blôde Fuottenpaad in Opende.

Each August you can enjoy the Indian Summer during the Festival Noorderzon. For ten days there are numerous shows and (theatre) performances both in the fairy-tale Noorderplantsoen and in the city centre. On the last Saturday in August, the ZomerJazzFietsTour starts. A unique combination of a cycle trip through the Reltdiepdal and jazz concerts in Mediaeval churches and farm sheds.

Enjoy culinary delights and a convivial drink

Restaurant Meerwold
One glance at the menu says it all: this is cooking at the highest level. A terrine of smoked salmon with La Ratte potatoes and saffron mayonnaise, beef carpaccio with truffle tapanade, Reypenaer VSOP fries and fennel crudités; the choice is yours. The Head Chef works with local quality produce as much as possible, such as the Zuidlaardermeer eel. He is continually developing new dishes, which means the menu also changes regularly. Restaurant Culinas is open seven days a week from 7.00 am to 9.00 pm.

Enjoyed a delicious dinner in Restaurant Meerwold but still fancy a last drink? Or maybe its time for early evening drinks? For a delicious drink you can visit the stylish hotelbar. When the weather's fine, you can enjoy sitting outside on the terrace.

“Excellent location when visiting Groningen by car”

We paid an especially good rate and on top of that we had a great stay at this hotel. Apart from the special rate we had chosen this hotel for its location on a cross roads of motor ways at the outskirts of Groningen. Parking in cities can be expensive and parking space difficult to find for an out-of-towner, but we parked the car here for free and every day we took the bus to Groningen and back. The bus stop is just some 10 minutes walk away from the hotel. Two different bus-lines stop close by the hotel. The hotel has a swimming pool, which we didn't use but always nice when one stays here, especially for the children. Our room was not very large but no complaints view the special rate we paid (you get what you pay for). But the room was clean and so was the rest of the hotel. The buffet breakfast was really excellent; we loved all the different fresh breads, some still warm like they had just arrived from the bakery. All the personnel, starting at the front desk and also in the restaurant were very friendly and courteous. Next time we visit Groningen again, we will surely stay at this hotel again.

Friends getaway
“Free parking and shuttle ....”

Free parking and shuttle to city center on weekends make this a great place to stay when on a weekend break. Good location only 5 minutes drive from center with nice walks outside the front door. V friendly staff and lovely communal area also. Breakfast was very good too! Has a small swimming pool also with good opening hours. Only negative is that the bedrooms are small with tired decor! But v comfortable all the same!

“Safe haven”

We arrived purely on spec seeking shelter from the most inclement summer weather thinkable and surely the worst climes we've experienced in The Netherlands during the month of July for quite a number of years. This hotel turned out to be a proper haven! With the front-of-house staff being welcoming, polite and efficient, the place itself proved to be spacious and clean, with a rather club-like quiet&comfortable vibe about it, away from the hustle-and-bustle of Groningen city centre and with easy access to all major motorways. Room prices as well as food and drink tariffs were reasonable, especially with the current EUR/GBP exchange rate being what it is. We rate this place! We'll stop there again next year! (And they put the Tour the France on for us in the bar, which went down well alongside a few of them cheeky high-spec Belgian lagers- get in!!)

When we arrived, the room was very hot which was not a problem on the first night because we used the pulse air system. But on next nights, the reception switched it off. When I complained about the problem, I was told the system was switched off only at nights, which was untrue as it was never on in the mornings. Moreover it is totally impossible to open the windows because there are a great variety of small and large spiders outside. I was given a fan because I insisted on the fact that we couldn't breathe. Second problem which shouldn't happen in such a hotel : the remote control didn't work : after changing the batteries twice, nobody was able to solve the problem for 5 days; I wonder if they even really tried to ! The wifi was very slow and the beds creaked each time we moved.
