Hotel on Prinsengracht

This is an absolute top location in Amsterdam: immediately on Prinsengracht and not far from the Amstel. The hotel couldn’t be better or more central. Hampshire Hotel – Prinsengracht is located in two 17th Century canal buildings and has 34 comfortable rooms. All rooms have views across the canal or the beautiful enclosed garden. Although the hotel is in the middle of the old centre, you’ll find an oasis of peace here.

From Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht you can go literally in any direction and you’re guaranteed to come across a museum, theatre or other cultural hotspot. If you’re heading towards the Amstel, you can choose from Hermitage Amsterdam and Koninklijk Theater Carré. Towards Muntplein, you’ll come across Foam photography museum. And towards Leidseplein you’ll come across the DeLaMar Theater, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, pop temple Paradiso and pop stage Melkweg.

Discover Amsterdam’s canal district

Amsterdam’s canal district has been on Unesco’s World Heritage List since August 2010. An international recognition of this part of the historic inner city’s special character, and Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht is right in the middle! Many special attractions and museums are close to this unique place and you can already purchase entrance tickets to many of these in the hotel. A few tips in the area:

Museums
At Museumplein you’ll find three top locations together: Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Van Gogh Museum. All three have a fantastic collection of world-famous works of art. In the other direction towards the Dam, you can visit De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam, famous for its much-discussed exhibitions. H.M. the Queen’s official reception palace is also on the Dam: Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam. Not far from here, towards Jordaan, there’s Anne Frank Huis, where Anne Frank stayed in hiding for more than two years during the Second World War. Hermitage Amsterdam has been in the former Amstelhof on the Amstel since 2009, an annex of the famous Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, On Stadhouderskade you’ll find the Heineken Experience, a museum “new style” about the world famous beer.

Children
You can visit The Amsterdam Dungeon for a creepy day out. Madame Tussauds is also great for slightly older children. It’s a place to “meet” their heroes and celebrities. For young scientists and researchers, Science Center Nemo is highly-recommended. Be a pirate on a East India Company ship? That’s possible at Het Scheepvaartmuseum, where the replica of the ship De Amsterdam is berthed. Towards the east of the city there’s the Tropenmuseum. In this museum they’re expert in getting the children interested in the culture of other nations. Check the programme for special activities.

Theatre and music
There’s more than enough to choose from in the area. For example visit a show in the beautiful Koninklijk Theater Carré. At Leidseplein there are no fewer than three theatres with attractive programmes: Stadschouwburg Amsterdam, DeLaMar Theater and Theater Bellevue. For pop concerts there’s the atmospheric pop temple Paradiso and a little further on is Melkweg, where many a celebrity has stood on the stage.

Breakfast or drinks on the terrace when the weather’s fine

Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht doesn’t have it’s own restaurant, but does have a bar and a space in which you can enjoy an extensive breakfast every morning. When the weather’s fine, you can also enjoy breakfast outside on the terrace in the beautiful inner garden. Or enjoy drinks there later in the day. Drinks and dishes from our snack menu, such as various toasted sandwiches, can be ordered at the bar throughout the day.

“Great location; service could be better”

The good: Had a pleasant stay despite several shortcomings of the hotel. Location is great -- on a quiet street in center of town. Room was quiet, pretty clean, spacious and well decorated. Free wifi worked well. The bad: Weeks ahead of time, I reserved and was quoted the price for a superior room with a canal view. However, I received a superior room without a canal view. I went to the front desk to request a room with a canal view, but was told they were all occupied. This was frustrating because I reserved the room long in advance and called the morning of my arrival to state I would be arriving late in the day so my room would not be given away. I was also told I would be charged the price I was quoted for a room with a canal view, which was very disappointing. Also, my queen bed consisted of two single mattresses placed together, and they frequently moved apart in the night creating a gap in the middle of the bed that was not comfortable. Lastly, late at night, you have to ring a bell for entrance to the hotel. One night, I came back to the hotel around 3 am and had to ring the bell for about five minutes in the cold before I was let in.

“Perfect situation for exploring amsterdam”

It was the second time we visited amsterdam. 2 years ago we stayed at the hampshire eden hotel, along the amstel river. However the hampshire hotel prinsengracht is better situated, also nicer along the prinsengracht. It is a rather small hotel. Room was clean and we had a view on the prinsengracht. (Room is not a large room, but this is typical in Amsterdam) The people at the reception were all very friendly and helpfull. It is really very good situated, with a tramway to the center and central station on circa 200 meter (vijzelstraat line 16 en 24) Breakfast has not an enormous choice, but is fresh and OK. I would really recommend the hotel for a city trip in amsterdam, due to it's excellent situation.

“Tiny, tiny, tiny”

OK, so I've come to understand that many hotel rooms in Amsterdam are of a certain "shoebox" size - and this certainly met that criteria. The staff, whilst they answered our questions, did not really go out of their way to expand nor help any more than they felt they had to. The hotel is in a reasonable location - right on the Prinsengracht, though at the far end and still a bit of a hike into the main center of the city. I've included some photos so you can get an idea of the squeeze - if we went to Amsterdam again, I'd certainly be looking for a different place to stay.

“Wonderful Stay!”

This hotel is well located on Prinsegracht, one of the most beautiful canals of Amsterdam. It is near 3 tram stops, but you could reach the very center (Muntplein, Dam, Nieuwmarkt, Rembrandtplein) even by walk. Also Leidseplein is very near. The hotel is open 24h/24, the receptionists are always kind, and you can rent a bike (12,50 Euro/day). You can find a better price for the bike, but it is very convenient to have it in front of the hotel. We booked (directly with the hotel) a Superior Double Room with view on the canal: good room (plenty of space for our things), clean, with tea/coffee maker. Free WiFi was good and always working. The room windows were big (as in all the houses on the canals), so the room was always beautifully flooded by the light! I'm sorry for the bad quality of my pictures: i made it with my phone on the night we arrived so it was too dark, but for once I wanted to make a picture BEFORE our stay ;-) If we had to return again in Amsterdam I already made my choice: this is the place to stay!

“Basic, but great!”

This hotel is a budget hotel, so of course the rooms aren't going to be fancy. However, they are everything you need for exploring this fascinating city. The rooms are clean, bright, showers are lovely and hot, and rooms come with plenty of tea and coffee and hairdryers, and plenty of toiletries too which was a nice surprise. We booked a twin room, and the rooms were too single rooms with an adjoining door but sharing a bathroom between the 2 of us which was lovely as for 2 young women we had a dressing table, mirror and hairdryer each so plenty of room to get ready. As we were canal facing the room was quite stuffy with the reflection of the sun, but there were fans.We hired bikes from the hotel which was very convenient and only 12 euros, great way to get around. The receptionist in the evening was so helpful with directions etc, and even called some places for us to book tickets and ask any queries to avoid any confusion in translation. We didnt go for breakfast as always got food on the go, but the restraunt and bar area looked lovely and cosy. Wifi was brilliant too. Would definitely stay again!
