Hotel on Prinsengracht

This is an absolute top location in Amsterdam: immediately on Prinsengracht and not far from the Amstel. The hotel couldn’t be better or more central. Hampshire Hotel – Prinsengracht is located in two 17th Century canal buildings and has 34 comfortable rooms. All rooms have views across the canal or the beautiful enclosed garden. Although the hotel is in the middle of the old centre, you’ll find an oasis of peace here.

From Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht you can go literally in any direction and you’re guaranteed to come across a museum, theatre or other cultural hotspot. If you’re heading towards the Amstel, you can choose from Hermitage Amsterdam and Koninklijk Theater Carré. Towards Muntplein, you’ll come across Foam photography museum. And towards Leidseplein you’ll come across the DeLaMar Theater, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, pop temple Paradiso and pop stage Melkweg.

Discover Amsterdam’s canal district

Amsterdam’s canal district has been on Unesco’s World Heritage List since August 2010. An international recognition of this part of the historic inner city’s special character, and Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht is right in the middle! Many special attractions and museums are close to this unique place and you can already purchase entrance tickets to many of these in the hotel. A few tips in the area:

Museums
At Museumplein you’ll find three top locations together: Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Van Gogh Museum. All three have a fantastic collection of world-famous works of art. In the other direction towards the Dam, you can visit De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam, famous for its much-discussed exhibitions. H.M. the Queen’s official reception palace is also on the Dam: Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam. Not far from here, towards Jordaan, there’s Anne Frank Huis, where Anne Frank stayed in hiding for more than two years during the Second World War. Hermitage Amsterdam has been in the former Amstelhof on the Amstel since 2009, an annex of the famous Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, On Stadhouderskade you’ll find the Heineken Experience, a museum “new style” about the world famous beer.

Children
You can visit The Amsterdam Dungeon for a creepy day out. Madame Tussauds is also great for slightly older children. It’s a place to “meet” their heroes and celebrities. For young scientists and researchers, Science Center Nemo is highly-recommended. Be a pirate on a East India Company ship? That’s possible at Het Scheepvaartmuseum, where the replica of the ship De Amsterdam is berthed. Towards the east of the city there’s the Tropenmuseum. In this museum they’re expert in getting the children interested in the culture of other nations. Check the programme for special activities.

Theatre and music
There’s more than enough to choose from in the area. For example visit a show in the beautiful Koninklijk Theater Carré. At Leidseplein there are no fewer than three theatres with attractive programmes: Stadschouwburg Amsterdam, DeLaMar Theater and Theater Bellevue. For pop concerts there’s the atmospheric pop temple Paradiso and a little further on is Melkweg, where many a celebrity has stood on the stage.

Breakfast or drinks on the terrace when the weather’s fine

Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht doesn’t have it’s own restaurant, but does have a bar and a space in which you can enjoy an extensive breakfast every morning. When the weather’s fine, you can also enjoy breakfast outside on the terrace in the beautiful inner garden. Or enjoy drinks there later in the day. Drinks and dishes from our snack menu, such as various toasted sandwiches, can be ordered at the bar throughout the day.

“Awful customer service”

We stayed here for 3 nights and wish we'd gone elsewhere. we had 2 so - called superior rooms which had filthy carpets in need of replacement. Most disappointing was the lack of tea making facilities as each room only had coffee machines. I asked the lady in reception if we could make a cup of tea from the breakfast bar as we do not during coffee. She refused and said the manager had installed the coffee machines in the rooms to make it more 'chic' and if we wanted tea we would have to pay extra! On another occasion I asked a gentleman on reception which doubles up as a bar, if I could have a glass of water. He was extremely rude and very begrudgingly served me a very small glass. I did not dare ask for another as his manner was very unfriendly. In short this hotel is very poor on customer service charging over the top prices. Would definitely not go back

Dear Guest, We are sorry to hear that your visit was not as pleasant as it should be. We have installed new nespresso machine in the rooms to provide a better cup of coffee. Indeed those machines do not make a nice cup of tea. We will look into this matter and when more guest want we will put an extra tea kettle in the room. In the meantime an extra kettle is avialable at the reception. We still hope that we can welcome you as our guest in the near future. With kindest regards Ed Schreurs

“Great Location Independent Hotel on Prinsengracht”

We stayed in Amsterdam for 2 nights in April and wanted to stay in a small independent hotel rather than a faceless chain. This ticked that box beautifully - very unique, family feeling with staff, décor, rooms etc. The hotel is located 10 minutes walk from the city centre and 5 minutes from the Rijksmuseum and the canal tours. The rooms are small, as all are in Amsterdam, and we stayed in a deluxe room, 402, which overlooked the canal and had a nespresso machine in the room. There is a lift, and the hotel were very relaxed about us leaving luggage pre and post check in. Staff were really lovely, friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, and Bear the Chocolate Labrador helps make you feel at home! The breakfast area was very small, probably a little too small for the number of guests, and therefore a little busy, but the food and drink at breakfast was very good, with fresh hot and cold buffet items and a variety of teas, coffees, juices etc.

“no air conditioning”

The hotel is on a lovely canal and has beautiful flowers cascading from window boxes. There is a lovely garden in the back for sitting and taking breakfast or late night drinks. The staff is friendly and helpful and there is an elevator to the upper floors. We were originally given the 2 room arrangement described below by another traveler which was a weird configuration for a couple. All was clean and orderly HOWEVER the hotel has no air conditioning and the windows did not open. It was a warm September and the temperature was close to 90 degrees F. We begged for another room and would have had to go to another hotel, but were given a double room in the back of the hotel where the windows would open and the afternoon sun wasn't shining in to cook us alive. The breakfast was a good one with meats, cheeses, sweet rolls, and great coffee. HOWEVER it was not explained to us that it was not included with the room and there was a 12 Euro charge each person, which was about $33 US. That was a bit much for breakfast for the budget conscious traveler and we could have done better at a nearby restaurant.

“Lovely weekend ”

We stayed here for the weekend with my boyfriend the staff really friendly and helpful. Hotel is in a great location walking distance to the city. The room was clean but a little on the small side but it didn't bother us it was just base. All in all we enjoyed our stay at the hotel and would come back when we visit Amsterdam again.
