Hotel on Prinsengracht

This is an absolute top location in Amsterdam: immediately on Prinsengracht and not far from the Amstel. The hotel couldn’t be better or more central. Hampshire Hotel – Prinsengracht is located in two 17th Century canal buildings and has 34 comfortable rooms. All rooms have views across the canal or the beautiful enclosed garden. Although the hotel is in the middle of the old centre, you’ll find an oasis of peace here.

From Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht you can go literally in any direction and you’re guaranteed to come across a museum, theatre or other cultural hotspot. If you’re heading towards the Amstel, you can choose from Hermitage Amsterdam and Koninklijk Theater Carré. Towards Muntplein, you’ll come across Foam photography museum. And towards Leidseplein you’ll come across the DeLaMar Theater, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, pop temple Paradiso and pop stage Melkweg.

Discover Amsterdam’s canal district

Amsterdam’s canal district has been on Unesco’s World Heritage List since August 2010. An international recognition of this part of the historic inner city’s special character, and Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht is right in the middle! Many special attractions and museums are close to this unique place and you can already purchase entrance tickets to many of these in the hotel. A few tips in the area:

Museums
At Museumplein you’ll find three top locations together: Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Van Gogh Museum. All three have a fantastic collection of world-famous works of art. In the other direction towards the Dam, you can visit De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam, famous for its much-discussed exhibitions. H.M. the Queen’s official reception palace is also on the Dam: Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam. Not far from here, towards Jordaan, there’s Anne Frank Huis, where Anne Frank stayed in hiding for more than two years during the Second World War. Hermitage Amsterdam has been in the former Amstelhof on the Amstel since 2009, an annex of the famous Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, On Stadhouderskade you’ll find the Heineken Experience, a museum “new style” about the world famous beer.

Children
You can visit The Amsterdam Dungeon for a creepy day out. Madame Tussauds is also great for slightly older children. It’s a place to “meet” their heroes and celebrities. For young scientists and researchers, Science Center Nemo is highly-recommended. Be a pirate on a East India Company ship? That’s possible at Het Scheepvaartmuseum, where the replica of the ship De Amsterdam is berthed. Towards the east of the city there’s the Tropenmuseum. In this museum they’re expert in getting the children interested in the culture of other nations. Check the programme for special activities.

Theatre and music
There’s more than enough to choose from in the area. For example visit a show in the beautiful Koninklijk Theater Carré. At Leidseplein there are no fewer than three theatres with attractive programmes: Stadschouwburg Amsterdam, DeLaMar Theater and Theater Bellevue. For pop concerts there’s the atmospheric pop temple Paradiso and a little further on is Melkweg, where many a celebrity has stood on the stage.

“Not bad, nice location”

Stayed 3 nights. Room was aging a bit but functional and a bit hot due to facing a sunny canal. Price was fair and the staff were friendly. The breakfast was good. The location is very good. I wouldn't put at 4 stars but would stay again in cooler months.

“Fijne overnachting”

I stayed here at the beginning of September. I was greated in a very friendly way. The breakfast was a little bit overpriced for my taste, but there are a lot of nice cafes nearby. The room that I stayed in was 006 and was just big enough for one person. All the facilities were there: wifi, tv, coffee and tea and a good hairdryer. The room was very clean and was quite cool. What I found to be a big plus was that after a night of going out on the town I could check out at 12 pm. It is also possible to rent bikes from the hotel. All in all this was a very nice stay.

“Garden House at Hampshire Hotel, Amsterdam”

Well what do you get for $334.50 a night including taxes? The old building behind the overgrown garden has two bedrooms. It has cheap (particle board) furniture. A ceiling light fixture that is hanging loose on one side....not enough light in the rooms. You cannot use the desk at night. By the way that is where the hair dryer is connected--by the TV and desk --no mirrors. It cannot be moved. The doors to the bathroom do not fit properly--hard push or hard pull needed. No Wifi on any of our iPhones. Woman at the desk said it did not always work there. So these are problems they are apparently aware of and do not fix. No place to hang anything in the bathroom which is sorely in need of an update. I can't remember when I last had to pull a string to turn on a light. Told management of my opinion of the accommodations and I was told this is a two star hotel not a luxury hotel. That's what you get for $334 per. I did make one good decision here. I did not opt for the 17 euro ($22) breakfast.

“Fantastic Location”

Perfect place to stay for visiting all the places of interest in Amsterdam. Close to shops, restaurants and boat cruises on the canal. The room was clean and a nice size for a double room, although extremely hot in the night! The only thing that spoils this hotel was the male member of staff on reception, we stood there in front of him wanting some advice and directions but he didn't acknowledge us as he was too busy texting on his phone! Eventually when he finally looked up we found him unfriendly and unhelpful which is a shame as there was a female receptionist on duty in the morning who was brilliant and made sure we were able to check in earlier than anticipated

“Great staff & service!”

Although the hotel itself is not very plush or particularly modern, it is well situated, and perfect if you need a place to predominantly sleep and shower. My husband and I had our "minimoon" there and loved it. There were a few things amiss when we first arrived (such as a broken fan & dirty kettle in the room), but as soon as we drew attention to these things the staff basically fell over themselves to try to make up for it. They were also exceptionally helpful when I needed medical care in the during the night and gave us good advice on how to keep costs low. Bicycle hire was also available at reception and the staff were always happy to help us find a nearby location when we wanted to see specific things. All in all I was very pleased with our stay and would go again.
