Hotel on Prinsengracht

This is an absolute top location in Amsterdam: immediately on Prinsengracht and not far from the Amstel. The hotel couldn’t be better or more central. Hampshire Hotel – Prinsengracht is located in two 17th Century canal buildings and has 34 comfortable rooms. All rooms have views across the canal or the beautiful enclosed garden. Although the hotel is in the middle of the old centre, you’ll find an oasis of peace here.

From Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht you can go literally in any direction and you’re guaranteed to come across a museum, theatre or other cultural hotspot. If you’re heading towards the Amstel, you can choose from Hermitage Amsterdam and Koninklijk Theater Carré. Towards Muntplein, you’ll come across Foam photography museum. And towards Leidseplein you’ll come across the DeLaMar Theater, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, pop temple Paradiso and pop stage Melkweg.

Discover Amsterdam’s canal district

Amsterdam’s canal district has been on Unesco’s World Heritage List since August 2010. An international recognition of this part of the historic inner city’s special character, and Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht is right in the middle! Many special attractions and museums are close to this unique place and you can already purchase entrance tickets to many of these in the hotel. A few tips in the area:

Museums
At Museumplein you’ll find three top locations together: Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Van Gogh Museum. All three have a fantastic collection of world-famous works of art. In the other direction towards the Dam, you can visit De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam, famous for its much-discussed exhibitions. H.M. the Queen’s official reception palace is also on the Dam: Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam. Not far from here, towards Jordaan, there’s Anne Frank Huis, where Anne Frank stayed in hiding for more than two years during the Second World War. Hermitage Amsterdam has been in the former Amstelhof on the Amstel since 2009, an annex of the famous Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, On Stadhouderskade you’ll find the Heineken Experience, a museum “new style” about the world famous beer.

Children
You can visit The Amsterdam Dungeon for a creepy day out. Madame Tussauds is also great for slightly older children. It’s a place to “meet” their heroes and celebrities. For young scientists and researchers, Science Center Nemo is highly-recommended. Be a pirate on a East India Company ship? That’s possible at Het Scheepvaartmuseum, where the replica of the ship De Amsterdam is berthed. Towards the east of the city there’s the Tropenmuseum. In this museum they’re expert in getting the children interested in the culture of other nations. Check the programme for special activities.

Theatre and music
There’s more than enough to choose from in the area. For example visit a show in the beautiful Koninklijk Theater Carré. At Leidseplein there are no fewer than three theatres with attractive programmes: Stadschouwburg Amsterdam, DeLaMar Theater and Theater Bellevue. For pop concerts there’s the atmospheric pop temple Paradiso and a little further on is Melkweg, where many a celebrity has stood on the stage.

“BEST PLACE EVER!!!”

A secret garden paradise hidden away amongst the hustle & bustle that Amsterdam can be. Two rooms with a shared bathroom, with Garden & terrace all to ourselves. If you're a group of 4 people, best place you can stay & laugh & drink the night away. Staff are VERY friendly & helpful & it's just BRILLIANT! I'll be staying again.

“Great choice, views are great”

Asked for a view, got it. Great staff, clean room and bathrooms, quiet hotel. Very close to the city centre, about 5 minutes walking so it was an ideal spot as you could enjoy the calm canals at night or hit the busier streets 5 mins away. Enjoyed it.

“Good location and a lovely garden”

I would recommend this hotel. It is pretty functional but the garden is excellent. The staff were friendly and efficient. If they read this I would thoroughly suggest getting fixed shower screens rather than shower curtains. I would go back. Thanks guys.

“Great Location - Friendly Staff”

2nd visit to this hotel - last time 2009, when i was impressed. Stayed for 2 days in July 2014 & observations - LOCATION - Excellent - reached in a 25 min walk from centraal station or No 16 or 24 tram to vitzelstraat. Hotel in quiet street. 10 - 15 mins walk to Dam Square RLD etc, 10 mins to leidseplien & only 5 to rembrant square.. ROOM - was a little dissapointed in this - single room on 5th floor (dont worry the hotel has a lift) - I know Amsterdam has small rooms due to type of buildings but this was very small - just enough room to walk to from bed / shower room & no more. Facilities kettle / safe (free), TV, shower room near the bed. This was the downside for me - the shower room had an extractor type fan noise all the time - even with the slide door shut, i could still hear this, even though i wore earplugs - very annoying. I spoke to staff but was advised it was automatic & could not be turned off. STAFF - Cant fault them , friendly & polite at all times. CLEANLINESS - Seemed OK, however, I noticed 2 large bites on my arms on day 2 - difficult to know where they came from - the bedsheets looked clean - may have came from the rear smoking yard, where mosquitos couldve been far more in number due to it being very hot days. I told reception staff about this - they didnt have any incect repellent to hand but for a short stay i wasnt too concerned. PRICE - £136 room only - fair but next time for the same money, id probably look at other hotels which seemed more modern, a little further away & offered breakfast in the deal. OVERALL - a nice place & definatly worth a quick stay & see what you think..
Owner Response of Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht
Dear Sir, Thank you for your feedback. The single room on the 5th floor is small but has the nice view on the garden. We will take care off the noise and if we can reduce the noise a litlle bit. But I am afraid it is the ventilator which subtracts the condens in the shower. so litlle can be done. We still hope we can welcome you as our guest in the future. With kindest regards E. Schreurs GM
