Hotel on Prinsengracht

This is an absolute top location in Amsterdam: immediately on Prinsengracht and not far from the Amstel. The hotel couldn’t be better or more central. Hampshire Hotel – Prinsengracht is located in two 17th Century canal buildings and has 34 comfortable rooms. All rooms have views across the canal or the beautiful enclosed garden. Although the hotel is in the middle of the old centre, you’ll find an oasis of peace here.

From Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht you can go literally in any direction and you’re guaranteed to come across a museum, theatre or other cultural hotspot. If you’re heading towards the Amstel, you can choose from Hermitage Amsterdam and Koninklijk Theater Carré. Towards Muntplein, you’ll come across Foam photography museum. And towards Leidseplein you’ll come across the DeLaMar Theater, Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, pop temple Paradiso and pop stage Melkweg.

Discover Amsterdam’s canal district

Amsterdam’s canal district has been on Unesco’s World Heritage List since August 2010. An international recognition of this part of the historic inner city’s special character, and Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht is right in the middle! Many special attractions and museums are close to this unique place and you can already purchase entrance tickets to many of these in the hotel. A few tips in the area:

Museums
At Museumplein you’ll find three top locations together: Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Van Gogh Museum. All three have a fantastic collection of world-famous works of art. In the other direction towards the Dam, you can visit De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam, famous for its much-discussed exhibitions. H.M. the Queen’s official reception palace is also on the Dam: Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam. Not far from here, towards Jordaan, there’s Anne Frank Huis, where Anne Frank stayed in hiding for more than two years during the Second World War. Hermitage Amsterdam has been in the former Amstelhof on the Amstel since 2009, an annex of the famous Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, On Stadhouderskade you’ll find the Heineken Experience, a museum “new style” about the world famous beer.

Children
You can visit The Amsterdam Dungeon for a creepy day out. Madame Tussauds is also great for slightly older children. It’s a place to “meet” their heroes and celebrities. For young scientists and researchers, Science Center Nemo is highly-recommended. Be a pirate on a East India Company ship? That’s possible at Het Scheepvaartmuseum, where the replica of the ship De Amsterdam is berthed. Towards the east of the city there’s the Tropenmuseum. In this museum they’re expert in getting the children interested in the culture of other nations. Check the programme for special activities.

Theatre and music
There’s more than enough to choose from in the area. For example visit a show in the beautiful Koninklijk Theater Carré. At Leidseplein there are no fewer than three theatres with attractive programmes: Stadschouwburg Amsterdam, DeLaMar Theater and Theater Bellevue. For pop concerts there’s the atmospheric pop temple Paradiso and a little further on is Melkweg, where many a celebrity has stood on the stage.

Breakfast or drinks on the terrace when the weather’s fine

Hampshire Hotel - Prinsengracht doesn’t have it’s own restaurant, but does have a bar and a space in which you can enjoy an extensive breakfast every morning. When the weather’s fine, you can also enjoy breakfast outside on the terrace in the beautiful inner garden. Or enjoy drinks there later in the day. Drinks and dishes from our snack menu, such as various toasted sandwiches, can be ordered at the bar throughout the day.

Stayed here from 13 June for a week, our 1st time in Europe Amsterdam, dont know what to expect, book a room for 2 person from the hotel website, requested for a canal view, vert fast reply said they cant gurentee it yet. Then my son decided to come with us,didnt want to book another room since we have limited budget. Arrive in the morning, location was superb, neighbouring all the other canal houses. They offer us to use their luggage room since check in is at 2pm. Our 1st day we got The garden room they guy in the front desk was concern that the room was to small for the 3 of us,they promise to move us to a bigger room the next day with a canal view to,told us to pack our things and they will help move it to the new room, after back from sightseeing, yes! We got our beautiful new room with canal view on the 6th floor,it was big and they move everything for us! Great service,im glad that I've pick this hotel for our very first time in Europe definetly will stay here again.

“Cosy hotel in good location”

Nothing to fault really, good location, friendly and helpful staff, clean and not too small room facing the canal, WiFi and a surprisingly good breakfast selection! There are tram stops and good restaurants nearby, including the upmarket Zinc, and some health food places around the corner.

“Fantastic location, OK hotel”

II had a stop-over in Amsterdam, and wanted an affordable hotel in the center of the city. The location is excellent: 20 minutes walk from the train station, and within easy walking distance of the whole city center. The service was friendly enough, the room was also OK, though I had the double deluxe room; my colleague only got a single room and it was tiny. The bathroom was functional but very small and plain. In short, everything worked, and there are no complaints. Would stay there again, but mostly for the location.

“Okay hotel”

The staff at this hotel were fantastic and if I was rating on them alone it would have five stars. However, the room wasn't as clean as I would have hoped for the price we paid. It was a tad bit expensive and not as close to the attractions as I would have liked. The housekeeping was very poor and as a matter of fact, there were some fake eyelashes in the carpet that we found after our second night in the hotel. GROSS. The breakfast is pretty good if it comes with your room, but if you have to pay extra I would skip it. They do rent out bikes here and we did that one day. I think it's a tad bit more expensive than some of the other bike rental places, but it was really convenient and we didn't have to have them back by 6pm or something like that.

“Underwhelming”

My boyfriend and I were backpacking Europe for 5 weeks and this stay was our "splurge" as it was the only hotel we were staying in. Unfortunately, we were dissapointed with our decision. The first night we arrived there was no hot water. We went out to get food and luckily it was back on later that night. Around midnight on our first night, the power went out in our room. The rest of the hotel still had power. We went to the front desk and he was able to turn it back on. Overall, it was a strange start to our stay. Nothing was complementary, which was fine, but the price of water bottles and coffee was outrageous. We ended up buying our own package of Nespresso cups from a store down the street for the same price of what would be two at the hotel's price. Our room was fine with a canal view, but the bathroom smelled horrible. It smelled like a combinaton of wet dog and an airplane bathroom. We would not choose to stay here again. -0
