Numerous possibilities for a great day out in Amsterdam.

Location, location, location. No problems in that respect at Hampshire Hotel - Rembrandt Square. Near the hotel, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a day out in Amsterdam: museums, exhibitions, historic sites, theatres and kids activities. A few suggestions:

Theatre and film
Anyone who loves art and cabaret will study the programme of De Kleine Komedie, the oldest theatre in Amsterdam (1786). Koninklijk Theater Carré is certainly worth a visit, if only to view the interior of this beautiful theatre. Pathé Tuschinski cinema is another lovely historic building. All the big blockbusters can be viewed here on the big screen.

The Hermitage Amsterdam presents various exhibitions from the collection from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg in Russia. Museum Het Rembrandthuis on Jodenbreestraat is located in the house where Rembrandt van Rijn lived and worked between 1639 and 1658. You will regularly find interesting exhibitions in De Nieuwe Kerk on the Dam. Fans of photography should certainly visit the FOAM Photography Museum on the Keizersgracht.

You can buy flowers, bulbs, plants and souvenirs on the floating flower market on Singel. There is a famous flea market on Waterlooplein near the Stopera.

Sailing through the canals is fun for young and old alike. Step onto a tour boat, rent a boat or take the whole family on a pedalo. Young scientists make exciting discoveries at the Science Centre NEMO. A visit to the fantastic Artis zoo is a joy for everyone. One of the highlights of the oldest zoo in the Netherlands are the tropical fish in the huge Aquarium.

This is the 12th time I have stayed at this hotel and I have noticed a big decline in the standard. We usually stay here twice a year and always choose this hotel for its excellent location and lovely rooms. This trip was for a mini honeymoon and the receptionist did upgrade us to an Executive room. We booked an Executive room in February and I was really surprised at how shabby this room was. *The walls were filthy and in desperate need of a clean/paint. * The carpet looked dirty * Two of the lights in the bathroom were out so it was hard to see in the mirror. * The housekeeper didn't replace any tea/coffee/creamer when the room was cleaned so had to call reception to get this sent to the room * The toilet roll also wasn't replaced and when the housekeeper came to the door, they asked us to replace it - which we didn't * The pillows were so lumpy we had a rubbish sleep and had to ask for new ones the next morning - when they were replaced they were just as lumpy The Duty Manager did come to the room on Saturday night to try to fix the lights but they just went out again when he left. I did discuss the above issues with him and I had to ask if we were definitely in an Executive room, but he wasn't sure! I would have said a DM should have known this. The breakfast was very disappointing. No cups by the tea/coffee machines. No scrambled eggs/sausages and a few bits of bacon, We had to wait over 5 minutes for these to be replaced. This was the same the following morning. It seems the staff don't keep a check on what needs replacing. Breakfast was included in the price but I definitely wouldn't pay extra for it as there are so many nice places around the hotel to eat for a much better price. The products in the bathroom have also changed since I last stayed. They used to use a fantastic brand called Rituals, but they have now changed to use products that smell like washing up liquid. Little changes like this are making this hotel feel cheap. This hotel has really gone downhill in such a short space of time and the General Manager really needs to sort this out. I would like to say one of the reception staff , Emma, was lovely. She was welcoming, friendly and was very interested in our problems..thank you :-)

“Very basic in a Good location ”

The carpet looks really bad and the shower is not practical at all. Good concierge service and good location to discover Amsterdam with good options to eat. Breakfast quite expensive but you can find better options around. Air conditioning to heat was not working properly.

“Excellent location but can be noisy”

We stayed here whilst attending business meetings and a trade show in Amsterdam. Our room was on the top floor under the rafters so whilst it was lovely with a massive bathroom there was only 1 very small window in the roof line so the room was quite dark. There was a construction site opposite which started work very early and as Rembrandtplein is an area for good nightlife there was often a lot of street noise till the early hours. However the location is excellent. There is a tram at the front to central station and it is easy to walk as well. Well located in a nice area of Amsterdam.

Dear guest, Thank you for taking the time to write a review about our hotel. For the next visit it is always possible to request a more quiet room not facing the square or streets. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. Best regards, The management

“Great Location and room. HUGE breakfast.”

Stayed only 2 nights over a weekend and will definitely return for a longer stay another time. Great location and easy to get to "everywhere" by foot or trams (We love trams!) Easy to find. We traveled on train from airport to Amsterdam Central Station and then on Tram to the Rembrandt Square. Possible to walk, but with bags, tram was better for us (and did I say we love trams??) Were given a room facing the back-yards. Not a particular pleasing view, but as we were out most of the days this did not matter to us at all. What DID matter was that the room was wonderfully quiet. No sounds from the busy bars/streets were heard at all. Great twin-bed. Slept long every day. Great shower (Plenty of warm water -even for a long lazy bath!) Toiletries (Shampoo, Shower/bath gel/Moisturiser) were good -but not refilled -but then again there was plenty for the 3 days/2 nights. Refilling would have been wasteful. +in addition there was a soap/shampoo dispenser in the shower and hand-wash at the sink. Great air-con (We used the heating setting and it heated up very quickly). Free Wifi in the room worked fine. HUGE breakfast buffet... So much choice and really good coffee from one of those "make-the -coffee-yourself-with-fresh-beans-you-can-see-being-ground-machines". Croissants, pastries, breads, toasts, jam, honey, Nutella, yogurt, fruit-salad, juices, bacon, eggs, sausages, cold meats, cheese.... and more... Easy check-in/out process. At check-in they required 50 Euros as a deposit in case of breakages. We were given a receipt for this. This was promptly refunded at check-out on production of the receipt. No issues at all. Lovely efficient reception-staff. Some reviewers have argued whether this is 3*(+) or low 4* .. but we did not have anything to complain about. We would definitely return.

“Great location”

Just back from a four night stay in Amsterdam, was as happy with the hotel as I was with the city in general! The rooms are modern and clean, with friendly staff and a decent selection and quality of food at breakfast. The hotel is within half an hours walk from most attractions, the ice bar being the closest about 50 yards down amstelstraat. From here we also walked to the Heineken brewery, anne franks house, madame tussauds, the red light district, dam square and central station, where we caught a canal boat and also travelled by metro (yellow line) to the ArenA. The area local to the hotel, the Rembrandtplein, is a great spot for bars and restaurants. We were thrilled with our stay in Amsterdam, and the hotel definitely contributed to this. Thoroughly recommended.
