Walking, cycling and culture

Of course the beautiful surroundings are perfect for walking and cycling trips. But don’t forget to take in the culture. For instance, the Van Gogh Huis in Nieuw Amsterdam that depicts the life and work of Vincent van Gogh in his ‘Drentse period’ around 1883. Or visit the Hunebedcentrum in Borger and the Sterrenwacht in the Planetron in Dwingeloo. Other activities in the area include:

The Gevangenismuseum in Veenhuizen is unique. Take a drive in a prison bus and see what the cells look like from the inside. The Herrineringscentrum Kamp Westerbork is in the middle of Drenthe. This area with monuments is also a museum about the history of Kamp Westerbork. The Drents Museum in Assen has an impressive collection of (pre)historic material, such as mammoth bones and bog bodies.

Cycling and walking
For cyclists and walkers there are countless routes to choose from, along the heathland, forests, shifting sands and fens. A wonderful option is the 13-kilometre walking route  through Dwingelderveld national park. A tip for cyclists is the 43-kilometre Drents-Friese Woudroute. You can find additional information at the Dwingelderveld Bezoekerscentrum.

Duinen Zathe amusement park in Appelscha has exciting attractions and fun theatre performances for the whole family. There are daily flight trips above Drenthe in a real Cessna from the Eelde airfield. At the Boomkroonpad outdoor centre in the Hondsrug nature reserve it is possible to play, building huts and go on treasure hunts. At Plopsa Indoor Coevorden, children can enjoy the various playgrounds, bumper cars and pirate roller coaster.
The ultimate place to see exciting animals from close quarters is Dierenpark Emmen.

In the area of group activities, with family or colleagues, everything can be arranged: ‘klootschieten’ (a local ball throwing game), cookery workshops, solex trips and walking trips with GPS. You can ask about these activities at the hotel.

Delicious dining

Delicious dining

Brasserie Wesseling
This à-la-carte restaurant has a fantastic kitchen. The head chef knows how to continuously surprise guests with delicious creations and seasonal menus. Perhaps as a starter you’d like rib-eye steak and sweetbread, goose rillette, crème brûlée of goats’ cheese or a crab tart? And that’s just for starters! Brasserie Wesseling also has an extensives wine menu.

Café Hotel Wesseling
Highly recommended: unwind on the terrace with a cup of coffee and a freshly-baked cake. From here you have a stunning view of the Siepeltoren of the Sint Nicolaaskerk. Afternoon drinks with a view are possible too. Thirteen wines are available by the glass, with fitting appetizers. The café menu also has delicious, light lunch dishes such as salads, wraps and quiches, and a 3-course menu, a classic ‘uitsmijter’ or omelette with a spicy saté. For young guests the kitchen pulls out all the stops to make something tasty.

Beautiful in winter and would be stunning in summer. Good walking and bike riding area. Hotel staff went out of their way to accommodate our needs. Would definitely go back any time of the year. Surrounding area was very scenic and we would have explored more if we had been there longer.

“Great hotel, friendly staff”

Stayed for one night when on a tour. Great hotel, breakfast buffet was very good with a great choice of breads and sweet things. We stayed in the building opposite, room was very large. The only problem I can foresee is that we were on the first floor next to the church..the bell rings every half an hour so on a hot night you can't leave the window open. We booked very late the same day so had we given notice they probably would have aired the room, it was very very hot when we arrived at about 11:30pm. That being said, we can't really fault them for that !

“Warm atmosphere but basic”

We stayed in Hotel Wesseling for a short spring break. The hotel has a nice cozy country atmosphere; the staff is very kind and helpful. The restaurant offers a nice variety of food either as a-la-carte or set menu. The rooms are clean but need definitely to be modernized and some more comfort. A fridge would be nice too.

“Very good”

A good, comfortable hotel in the centre of a small, pretty village. The service was slow to start (it took a while to attract anyone's attention to check in) but very good after that. The food was excellent and the restaurant staff attentive. The room was good with a comfortable bed. Couldn't make the television work, but that is a minor consideration. Breakfast was good the coffee superb!

“Not luxurious, just pleasant.”

Hampshire Hotel Wesseling is a pleasant hotel in the village center. The hotel consists of 2 seperate buildings. One is called “De Brink Hotel” and the other one is called “Wesseling”. The first one is closest to the church with bells ringing every half hour. We’ve stayed 3 nights in Hotel Wesseling and it was a pleasant stay. Our room was on the backside, groundlevel and we hardly heared the churchbells. The hotel served a 3 course diner and that was more or less okay. They also offer a smaller menu choice that can be used in the conservatory. Breakfast is great (buffet). Our bathroom had a strange smell and the mattrasses are a bit tired like the whole bedroom. Don’t expect design or other fancy stuff in your room, it’s just a room with a bathroom and separate toilet, spacious and clean. Flatscreen on the wall. Our central heating radiator made a terrible noise, like someone handling a jackhammer. Just turn it down. My best advise is: take it as it is. Enjoy and have long walks in the beautiful National Park “Dwingelderveld”. The hotel offers free private parking very near the hotel. Free wifi. All interesting arrangements you’ll find on the internet can be booked directly with the hotel, no booking fee!!!!
