A trip back to Roman times

Hampshire Landgoedhotel - Holthurnsche Hof is in the middle of Rijk van Nijmegen, one of the Netherland’s greenest regions. The area’s rich history goes way back to Roman times, which can be seen from the countless monuments. And the countryside is breathtaking. On one hand there’s the riverside scenery between the Maas and Waal rivers in the Ooijpolder and Duffelt nature reserves. On the other, the hills and dales concealing Beek-Ubbergen, Berg en Dal, Groesbeek and Mook.

Walking
Try at least one of the eleven walks in the Ooijpolder and Duffelt nature reserves, past curious cows, castles and old windmills. There’s also great walking and cycling through the riparian area and grasslands in the Millingerwaard nature reserve in the heart of the Gelderse Poort, with the Millinger Theetuin making an excellent stop for high-tea or lunch.

Museums
Discover the riches of African art and culture in the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal. The past comes to life in the National Liberation Museum 1994-1945. Experience the run-up to the war and the occupation and celebrate the liberation.

Children
A day in the Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen is a true adventure. Walk along with Bamboo Bill or one of the other park adventurers and get to know everything about the animals. Tivoli Amusement Park is a theme park in Berg en Dal with around twenty attractions. Take a trip on the roller coaster, get the creeps in the haunted house, or take a spin on the carousel.

Golfing
Challenge yourself on the Rijk van Nijmegen golf course. The sloping course provides stunning views in the middle of the countryside and has no fewer than 45 holes.

Relaxation
Sauna & Beauty de Thermen Nijmegen is a spacious sauna and thermal bath complex for ultimate relaxation.

“Preofesional, Friendly, well run Hotel that is good value for money”

I have stayed here a an individual traveller and as part of an organised event. The hotel is a bit different, as it is built in to a hill side. It means you go down to the bedrooms but they have wonderful views of the local countryside. The rooms are well equipped with comfortable beds, great bathroom/wet-rooms and plenty of space. One small gripe is that not every room has air conditioning which is needed when it gets warm in this part of the Netherlands, as it can get very humid. The staff are very friendly and professional. They all speak English to a high standard, which puts my almost complete lack of Dutch to shame. The buffet breakfast has the expected range of breads, pastries, cheese, cooked meats, fruit etc and also includes bacon, scrambled or boiled eggs, small pancakes. You can eat your fill comfortably. The restaurant in the evening serves fresh modern seasonal food to a high standard and is well priced. The grounds are green and peaceful, with the hotel approached down a long drive through open farmland from the road. For events the hotel also goes that extra mile. I have been there several years in a row where the hotel has been taken over for an event and again the professionalism and helpfulness of the staff are impeccable. This time around I was greeted like an old friend, which always goes own well. Each year small improvements are made, increasing the customer experience. If I had one small issue it would be the lack of a decent mobile signal I some parts of the hotel, but that is more to do with geography. The wifi connectivity could also be better. I will no doubt be back next year and am already looking forward to my visit

“An OK stopover hotel”

Not a lot to say; not much character, excellent staff, nice surrounding parkland, beds a bit dippy so watch out with the bad back, linen not great, narrow treads on the stairs (why? this is not a narrow townhouse in Amsterdam) and carpeted, so not good for the elderly or infirm, but there is a lift. Big room, badly proportioned, very good bathroom with a jumbo head, watch out for the killer step up in the middle of the night. Big no-no is the curtain covering the entirely glazed window-wall - no lining or blackout so you are awake with the arrival of dawn. Sound-proofing between rooms is very poor. No mobile phone signal in our room (downstairs).

“For the able-bodied as for the disabled: an excellent option”

If your destination is the Nijmegen area, and if you happen to have a car (or bicycle!) at your disposal, you HAVE to stay at this hotel in Berg en Dal. The setting is idyllic, the rooms are spacious, the breakfast buffet is immense. And best of all (for us, at least): they have great facilities for the disabled. Our room, which even had a small terrace, overlooked a vast meadow surrounded by a forest and countless birds (the two other floors on this side of the building have only French doors - no balcony). The bathroom was huge with a beautifully designed yet practical sink and roll-in shower.

“Beautiful Location”

We stayed in this hotel for three nights and found the room poorly furnished. We had the bronze suite with lovely views. However the cobwebs on the balcony railing were not a good look. Also not very impressed with the tiny little uncomfortable lounge in this massive room. Would have expected at least two comfortable lounges for lounging and you could not even have people around and sit with them. The bathroom was amazing and very well furnished. However, the beds were comfortable but would have expected a double bed/queen bed for a couple. Was very strange to have two single beds pushed against one another..... Would have been nice to have better wiifi in the room...we had to keep going out of our room to another part of the hotel to have better access. Not enough english channels...which made it difficult on a rainy day as there was no gym either and without a car you are stuck in the hotel. We consumed one evening meal and were not impressed with one of our guest's meal and when we spoke to the chef he was rude saying there was nothing wrong with the meal. However, the Manager in charge rectified it very well and looked after our group. One waiter in particular that night was to be highly recommended for his excellent service. He was quick, friendly and courteous. The breakfast each morning was excellent but would have liked "poached eggs" instead of scrambled eggs on one of the mornings...perhaps alternate and have perhaps a more English breakfast with tomatos or baked beans...but this is probably not a typical Dutch breakfast? The bushwalking was really good and would have liked to have hired a bike to explore the surrounding areas but ran out of time.
