French classics or something Mediterranean?

French classics or something Mediterranean?

Restaurant Hemingway
Restaurant Hemingway can be found on the ground floor of the hotel. The Head Chef serves various classic French dishes with his own twist, including monk fish with saffron salt, served as bouillabaisse or with mushroom-filled fillet of black chicken with a shiitake jus. Dining City recently selected Restaurant Hemingway as one of the five best restaurants in Brabant.

Restaurant Nuevo Pidola
Do you prefer dinner with a Mediterranean twist? Then you can visit the restaurant at the side of the hotel: Nuevo Pidola. You’ll find a combination of familiar and special dishes on the menu, served in a warm Mediterranean ambiance. Important to mention is that the restaurant offers an extremely extensive wine menu.

La Terrasse
You can enjoy a drink in the comfortable lounge terrace of Hotel en Résidence De Draak – Hampshire Classic while savouring the beautiful view across Bergen op Zoom’s Grote Markt. The perfect place to unwind after an extensive city walk or just to relax for a while.

“Perfect”

This is the most charming hotel I have ever stayed in. It is so quaint, dating from the 1300's, yet, has been modernized in a most pleasing way. The town square is right out front. Our room is cozy and inviting, yet spacious, and the lounge and reception are delightful. If you ever find yourself in this area of Holland, be sure to stay here.

“Old World Charm in the 21st Century”

Only just open again after a terrible fire this 600 year old hotel has everything. The room are a reasonable size but are beatiful with high ceilings and solid oak floors. The staff are attentive without being obtrusive and the food is excellent. Right on the Town Square you are at the centre of everything. Bergen op Zoom is a beatiful small town and is accessible by train from Schipol

“Not exactly glamorous but convenient and charming”

Clean accommodations and great location. This is a very historic building so it's very charming but lacking some modern flair that I've come to expect when traveling on business. One great perk is that you never know what your room will look like. The historic architecture provides different floorplans for nearly every room. The staff is friendly and helpful. I've stayed here twice for several nights each time. A fine establishment, just nothing fancy.

“Very Disappointing”

Rather than write a separate review, I have pasted in below, the email I sent on 17th April to Hampshire Hotels, the group which owns the Residence de Draak. As of today, 1st May, I have not even received an acknowledgement of receipt of my email. I think this speaks volumes and no further comment is needed. My email below: "Dear Sirs I stayed at the Residence de Draak on the night of Tuesday 15th April and it was a very poor experience. There was apparently a problem with the heating and the hotel appeared to think it was perfectly normal, to attempt to fix the problem at 11:00 p.m. in the evening. This involved noisy conversations outside some guests rooms, between hotel staff and the plumber and repair work to the radiators, which also created a lot of noise. In addition, the work carried out by the plumber caused the radiator in my room to leak and I had to call for reception to bring towels, in order to soak up the water flowing across the wooden floor towards the door. What was the compulsion to do this work at 11:00 p.m., when at least some guests are trying to sleep? As a regular business traveller, sleep is one of the things I value above all others in a hotel and I have been badly let down as your guest. The following morning, at breakfast, some of the hotel staff thought it would be a good idea to disturb the peace and quiet of breakfast, by having a prolonged conversation about the centrepiece breakfast arrangement in the breakfast room. This involved frequently re-arranging the cereals, yoghurts, etc and then discussing whether they looked right or not. Why could they not wait until after breakfast had finished, to do this? When I complained to reception yesterday morning, the overriding 'tone' of the apology was: "Well, we're sorry but what else did you expect us to do?" In other words, they made their problem my problem. I do not mind spending money on a good hotel but for this, I expect to get a good night's sleep, i.e. not disturbed by hotel staff and to have breakfast in relaxed, peaceful surroundings. My bill came to 145.00 € and quite frankly, I feel I have been cheated. The hotel is a lovely old hotel with some beautiful rooms but it has been badly let down by some of its staff on this occasion. The sign or mark of a very good hotel, is the way it deals with complaints. I would like to invite you to respond to my comments, before I post my review on TripAdvisor and booking.com.

“Terrible”

Firstly I was put in the building across from the main hotel. Seemed very nice as you walk but there it stops. Room 106. 1. Toilet. I'm not kidding when I say that there was barely an inch between my knees when sat on the toilet ( you can't stand cos of the space) and the tiled wall. It is comical. Well comical for about twenty seconds. 2. Noise. Some idiot decides to fix the heating at 23.00 at night. Banging and drilling outside my window, oh and the service door is right by my room door. After shouting at a grey haired employee and heating engineer that I am trying to sleep. The employee answered: we have a problem with heating. So what! Fix it when I'm not in my room. I have never experienced something like this. Never never never again. Incompetent guest unfriendly hotel. Stay elsewhere and don't be fooled by its first impressions.
