Imposing 17th Century castle close to Harderwijk

Step back in time in this imposing, 17th Century castle in a beautiful location in Hierden, close to Harderwijk. You’ll find an oasis of calm here in the green heart of the Veluwe. Kasteel de Essenburgh – Hampshire Classic has forty rooms, including several castle rooms, with views across the rustic, English landscape garden and pond. If you’re lucky you’ll even spot deer from your room.

This offers various possibilities for fun trips with the entire family, such as the Dolfinarium in Harderwijk or Palace Het Loo and the Apenheul in Apeldoorn. Beautiful countryside for walking and cycling

You’ll find both beautiful countryside for walking and cycling as well as great cities to visit around Kasteel de Essenburgh – Hampshire Classic; and fantastic attractions for the children. A few tips:

Art and culture
Hanseatic town Harderwijk is just 5 kilometres from the hotel and has fun places of interest. To make sure you don’t miss anything, make a guided or unguided tour through the historic city centre. The Harderwijk City Guides Guild organises a number of city walks, such as the churches and monastery route and the delicious culinary route. Apeldoorn is also not too far from the hotel. On the outskirts of this city, you’ll find Palace Het Loo: the more than three-hundred-year-old Royal Palace that’s open to the public. The richly-designed quarters give a beautiful image of three centuries of royal residence by the House of Orange. In addition to the permanent collection, you can see changing exhibitions and visit the baroque gardens and palace park.

You dive into a magical underwater world in the Dolfinarium in Harderwijk. You can meet dolphins, walruses, sea lions, seals and other sea creatures. And the largest dolphin show in Europe is held here. You’ll make the children really happy with a trip to Walibi Holland. That is at least, if they like a bit of action. Because there are fantastic rides here in spectacular roller coasters, such as Speed of Sound. In the Apenheul in Apeldoorn you can watch lots of monkeys roaming free, either from a distance from very close quarters. And also in Apeldoorn there’s the nostalgic Family amusement park ‘Koningin Juliana Toren’ with more than sixty attractions.

Walking and cycling
In the hotel’s immediate vicinity there’s so much countryside for fantastic walking and cycling. We’d also recommend the slightly more distant Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve. In this marshland with reed beds, rough grassland and lakes in South Flevoland you can get acquainted with the Netherlands as it was a thousand years ago.

Zwaluwhoeve Wellness resort is a stone’s throw from the hotel. You can totally relax here in different saunas, a Turkish steam room, plunge pool, hot whirlpools, heated outdoor pool and relaxation areas.

Vaulted cellar “De Oude Mheen”
The kitchen in the vaulted cellar’s restaurant uses only fresh and as far as possible, organic, produce. From chocolate “castle muffin” to sorbet, it’s all home-made. The restaurant can seat sixty guests who can enjoy an evening three-course dinner. You can also choose from the seasonal menu. If you are with a large group, you can discuss with the Head Chef about organising something different or composing a special menu. From a walking dinner to a barbecue: everything is possible.
In the breakfast room next to the restaurant you can enjoy an extensive breakfast buffet every morning from 8.00 a.m., including home-made bread, sugar bread, croissants and home-made raspberry jam. The castle’s vaulted cellar also houses the stylish hotel bar. The bar is open every evening and also has an outside patio with views across the country estate.

“Kasteel de Essenburg in Nov 2014”

Stayed here with little planning BUT did look at TripAdvisor reviews; Made reservations via on line; received email confirmation; arrived around 515PM; checked in; as noted in the reviews--parking is free albeit block away as this "Kasteel" does indeed have a moat lol; had checked for the two options availailable-3 course dinner and breakfast; dinner was at 6 or 8 pm; so my party of four checked into our rooms; yes true to the reviews each contained two single/twin beds but heat worked; rooms had their own bathroom and all seemed fresh; dined at 6 pm; only glitch was as we had 40ish minutes till dinner AND the bar area was closed due to upcoming reserved event AND the other seating area was all full of people, we were left with walking outside (dark); sitting in very small room; or wander the first floor of the hotel did a bit of wandering; Meal was very good; some creaks and sounds throughout the night; breakfast was very good.

“Perfect experience”

I booked Kasteel de Essenburgh for my partner's birthday and we couldn't have hoped for a better experience. The staff were fantastic, the Kasteel was charming, the restaurant was lekker, the weather and surrounding forest was beautiful.. we were sad to leave! Thanks again and we'll be back.

“The castle is cool”

We stayed in the castle. Just one night as we were on a little bike tour. The view from the room was beautiful. It was the middle of a heatwave but the window was big, so we kept it open the whole time. There is no bathroom in the room, but each room has its "own" bathroom in a big bank of them clustered together. We had dinner at the restaurant. I think maybe it was one of the most beautiful dining experiences we have ever had. Yeah the food was great, but it was a sunny afternoon and sitting outside under the shade of the castle in the grounds, eating our food, drinking our's just beautiful. The hotel is easily accessible by bike and there are bike racks (not under cover though) at the back of the hotel to lock up your bike. Staff were really nice. All spoke English for us.

“It probably isn't the romantic castle experience you were expecting...”

We didn’t stay in the actual castle itself but around the corner in what I presume were previously the servants’ quarters for the castle. The room was small and simple, clean but very hot! Luckily they had a fan because opening the window meant falling prey to mosquitoes. They have a range of bikes to rent and we were lucky with the weather and were able to do quite a round. The breakfast is very basic and does leave a little more to be desired. And for a place that seems quite popular for romantic getaways, it does not have couple tables but instead tables that can fit 4 or 6 people in the restaurant. So on a full day, people will have to leave the breakfast area and sit elsewhere to have their quiet time.

“"Spiekerhierden" Castle Room in Essenburg Big Disappointment”

The property and the Castle itself is very nice. However, we rented a "castle room" for one night expecting a room as nice as the photo on the hotel's website (antiek-looking wooden furniture, glass panel windows, drapes) instead the room was an attic room with metal frame beds and cheap ikea-type furniture. The "beautiful view" was a view on a parking lot behind the hotel. Needless to say the castle room was a big disappointment.
