Art and culture in Utrecht

Malie Hotel Utrecht – Hampshire Classic is the ideal base for discovering the cultural treasures of the city of Utrecht. The municipal theatre, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht, is just a seven-minute walk away and there are a number of museums and cultural attractions that are easy to reach on foot or by public transport. A few tips:

Art and culture

The world-famous Rietveld Schröderhuis that belonged to furniture-maker and architect Gerrit Rietveld. This house/museum dates from 1924 and was built completely in line with the principles of the ‘De Stijl’ art movement. Other interesting museums in the city include Museum Speelklok – with its fascinating collection of musical instruments – and the Central Museum, where you can view the world’s largest collection of Rietveld objects.

In the Railway Museum – Het Spoorwegmuseum – at Maliebaan Station, children can ride on the children’s train, take a dream trip on the Orient Express and enjoy an exciting tour along life-sized locomotives. The Dick Bruna House is located opposite the Central Museum. This is where the world-famous Dick Bruna characters come to life: Boris the bear, Snuffy and Miffie. In the Dom Tower on Domplein, there are special guided tours for children. A cruise through Utrecht’s canals is a great day out for all the family.

Close to the hotel, and right in the heart of the Maliekwartier neighbourhood, you can find the best shopping streets in Utrecht: Nachtegaalstraat and Burgemeester Reigerstraat. Besides trendy and stylish fashion shops, you can also find great antique shops, surprising gift shops and interesting bookshops.

Walk through the lively city centre past the 600 year-old Dom Tower, the Oudegracht and Nieuwegracht canals, along the many almshouses and squares and through lovely parks such as Wilhelminapark. Would you prefer to leave the city and spend some time close to nature? Then, a walk through the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug is highly recommended.

Every morning from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., a well-assorted breakfast buffet is served in the hotel’s breakfast room. In the weekend, the breakfast times are slightly different: from 8 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. The breakfast room is right beside the garden at the back of the hotel. With a little luck, it will be a sunny day and you can have breakfast in the garden.
If you wish, you can also arrange to have breakfast earlier.

Bar – Restaurant Inspired
Malie Hotel Utrecht – Hampshire Classic does not have its own restaurant, but Bar – Restaurant Inspired is just a 5 to 10 minute walk away. This is a modern restaurant with delicious items on the menu, from classic dishes to surprising creations by the chef. The perfect address for a business dinner or romantic evening for two.

“A very relaxing stay in the "Domstad" Utrecht”

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights since we wanted to avoid crowded Amsterdam. It was a good choice! Being before in a Hampshire Classic in Amsterdam, we decided to go for another Hampshire this time. The venue is more or less in the middle of Utrecht, 1500 meters from the city centre and around the corner of our national railway museum. From the motorway it is a bit of a longer drive, but therefore you are in the city centre! Parkingplaces are available around the hotel, a permit is provided by the friendly staff. Since the Hotel is not at a main street, it is not noisy. This Hotel is situated in a nice old building, the rooms have a good size and offer the normal services as WiFi, Teacooker etc. Breakfast facilities are nice, if it is warm, you can sit in the garden. Bicycles are offered for rental , a great way to discover Utrecht. Would I stay here again? Yes, I would.

“Good neighbourhood, simple but tasty breakfast”

I stayed here for a long visit in March/April. The room was pretty small but quite functional. There were a decent number of electrical outlets, and in places that were actually convenient. The hotel uses liquid soap and liquid body wash / shampoo in big dispensers. The bathroom's pretty small (and not especially fantastically vented). The room has a cute little balcony that allows for better ventilation; if it'd not been so cold and rainy in Utrecht, I might have tried to figure out how to sit on it, but as it was it just made things a bit cheerier. The neighbourhood of the hotel is quite pleasant: there are a lot of restaurants a few minutes' walk away, and a convenient laundromat and some grocery stores. The hotel was kind enough to lend me some silverware one night when I got take-out for dinner. There's a same-ness to the breakfast: indeed, each morning is *identical* to the previous, down to the inexplicable red currants in the fruit salad. But there's decent coffee, an orange juice squeezing machine, and good bread, along with the usual cheeses and meats. The scrambled eggs and bacon never appealed to me much, particularly the eggs. All told, it's a quite fine hotel in a particularly nice residential setting.

Thank you for your wonderful four-star review. We are very happy to see you've had such a lovely stay at the Malie Hotel. It's good to see you've taken the time for writing the review with a eye for details. Your comment regarding the breakfast gives us a good idea of how we can change things. For us it's important to provide the same quality each day, but it might be a real good idea to change some items each day to make it more surprising each day for our guests that visit us a longer period. We will certainly consider this! We look forward to see you again in the Malie Hotel, you're more than welcome! Kind regards, Sharon van der Burgh Assistant Hotel Manager

“Only one night but nearly perfect”

A nice and clean medium-class hotel with excellent friendly, helpful staff and with a very good breakfast. An absolute highlight was the dinner at the " Inspired" restaurant, that we had booked with the same reservation. We got a surprise menu with "Crunchy Shusi " and two other extremely delicious meal courses. We will be back!

“Elegant hotel in quiet upscale neighborhood”

This is one of the best areas of Utrecht, with many upscale and stately mansions. The room was not too big but ok. The window was pretty small and gave a view of the backside of the hotel. It takes about 20-30 min to walk to the city center, but it is a pleasant walk as it brings you to many authentic spots of Utrecht. It was not easy to park the car, but the hotel reception offers a limited number of reasonably priced parking spaces Hotel staff were friendly and spoke English
