Art and culture in Utrecht

Malie Hotel Utrecht – Hampshire Classic is the ideal base for discovering the cultural treasures of the city of Utrecht. The municipal theatre, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht, is just a seven-minute walk away and there are a number of museums and cultural attractions that are easy to reach on foot or by public transport. A few tips:

Art and culture

The world-famous Rietveld Schröderhuis that belonged to furniture-maker and architect Gerrit Rietveld. This house/museum dates from 1924 and was built completely in line with the principles of the ‘De Stijl’ art movement. Other interesting museums in the city include Museum Speelklok – with its fascinating collection of musical instruments – and the Central Museum, where you can view the world’s largest collection of Rietveld objects.

In the Railway Museum – Het Spoorwegmuseum – at Maliebaan Station, children can ride on the children’s train, take a dream trip on the Orient Express and enjoy an exciting tour along life-sized locomotives. The Dick Bruna House is located opposite the Central Museum. This is where the world-famous Dick Bruna characters come to life: Boris the bear, Snuffy and Miffie. In the Dom Tower on Domplein, there are special guided tours for children. A cruise through Utrecht’s canals is a great day out for all the family.

Close to the hotel, and right in the heart of the Maliekwartier neighbourhood, you can find the best shopping streets in Utrecht: Nachtegaalstraat and Burgemeester Reigerstraat. Besides trendy and stylish fashion shops, you can also find great antique shops, surprising gift shops and interesting bookshops.

Walk through the lively city centre past the 600 year-old Dom Tower, the Oudegracht and Nieuwegracht canals, along the many almshouses and squares and through lovely parks such as Wilhelminapark. Would you prefer to leave the city and spend some time close to nature? Then, a walk through the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug is highly recommended.

Start the day with a top breakfast

Start the day with a top breakfast

Every morning from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., a well-assorted breakfast buffet is served in the hotel’s breakfast room. In the weekend, the breakfast times are slightly different: from 8 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. The breakfast room is right beside the garden at the back of the hotel. With a little luck, it will be a sunny day and you can have breakfast in the garden.
If you wish, you can also arrange to have breakfast earlier.

Bar – Restaurant Inspired
Malie Hotel Utrecht – Hampshire Classic does not have its own restaurant, but Bar – Restaurant Inspired is just a 5 to 10 minute walk away. This is a modern restaurant with delicious items on the menu, from classic dishes to surprising creations by the chef. The perfect address for a business dinner or romantic evening for two.

“We were disappointed”

Our room was very small. The bathroom was new, but there was a sickening smell from the drain. We had to keep the window open all day and night. Breakfast was ok, little choice, but freshly pressed orange juice as much as you like. The staff was friendly, but never asked for our satisfaction. We think, we know why. We obviously got the worst room they have. Maybe in someone interests: the double bed has just one big blanket for two persons. Summerized the Hotel underachieved our expectations.

Dear Michaela, How sorry to hear your stay with us was not to your expectations. We have asked our technical service to check what could have caused the smell in your room the moment we received your review. I only wished you let us know during your stay, so we could have provided you another room. Indeed we are very happy with our new orange juice machine. If you have any suggestions what to offer extra on our buffet, please let me know. With kind regards, Serena de Wissel - Supervisor Front Office

“Business hotel in quiet location ”

I have stayed at the Malie Hotel for nearly 20 years. It retains its excellent location (a quiet residential area within walking distance of the city centre) and its enthusiastic and helpful staff. Standards are still good in its rooms, its bar and its breakfast room. What it has lost is its individuality the dead hand of central supplies has eased out better quality locally sourced food, for instance. Full marks to the management who recognised (and recompensed generously) the problem a colleague had with being woken at 6.00am by an over-enthusiastic window cleaner and his beeping cherry picker. Not the hotel's fault, except for whoever allowed the contract for this.

Dear Jeremy, Thank you for your time leaving a review, we highly appreciate it you choose our hotel for such a long time now. Now that the renovation of our breakfast room and bar is finished, we are ready for renovating our rooms. Last week unfortunately it went wrong once when we have received the equipment to continue this renovation. Of course we will do our best to avoid any inconvenience for our guests during this renovation. We look forward to welcome you back the following years in our renovated hotel. “Nice hotel close to the city center”

The hotel is located in a very residential neighborhood roughly a 15-20 minute walk to the city center. We arrived by car and were concerned about parking, but the very friendly front desk clerk gave us a parking pass that allowed us to park on the street. It seems they have a very limited number of these so I would recommend contacting the hotel if you are arriving by car such to reserve a parking pass. We stayed in a junior suite and the room and bathroom were both very nice. Utrecht was a beautiful city and a highly recommended stop for a night or two.

Dear Laxslc, Thank you so much for your amazing review! Every day we work hard to make sure our guests feel welcome and appreciated and with this 5 star review it seems you were! We have a limited amount of parking passes indeed, but since we only have a few available, it is not possible to reserve them in advance. The best advise we can give is to park the car in front of the hotel for loading and unloading and ask at the desk if there is a pass available. Again, thank you for your kind words and we look forward to welcome you again at the Malie Hotel. With warm regards, Sharon van der Burgh Assistant Hotel Manager Malie Hotel Utrecht

“A very nice stay”

The room, breakfast, service, everything was spot on. The hotel is quite close to the city center, but on a quiet side street, so no noise whatsoever during the night. I would stay here again without hesitation.

“This hotel needs renovation, 20th century room, beautiful lobby though..”

Maybe we had the worse and oldest room available in the hotel... The bathroom instead was wonderful. The carpets were 3 cm thick, room very old fashioned, the coffe maker was dirty and 1 of the milk cups was open. The staff was nice, excepting the fact that we arrived past 4pm one day, and we wanted to leave our car until 2pm the next day, the 'manager' expected us to pay 5 € for 2 hours after checking out. Not even a private parking, it was on the backstreet... Never seen that.

Dear Alba Lucia, Thank you kindly for taking the time to leave your reviews on TripAdvisor regarding the Malie Hotel. We highly appreciate this. You've mentioned you think the hotel needs a renovation. We are very happy we are in the process of full remodelling the hotel. The lobby, breakfast restaurant and the bar are already finished and we are very proud of the results. At the moment two test chambers are finished and we would love to show you these rooms and when everything is finished you are more than welcome to stay in one of our new rooms with the highly regarded beds from Auping, which is a major bed producer from the Netherlands, they produce high-quality beds, which are distributed over almost the entire world. The hotel is located in an area very close to the city centre of Utrecht. In the Netherlands it is obligated to pay for the public parking in every large city, as well as it is in Utrecht. We are very happy to be able to provide several parking permits at a small charge. If there are no permits available any more it is always possible to pay at the parking machine which is more expensive. We hope to have the pleasure to be up to our reputation during your next stay with us. Warm regards, Sharon Wijnands - van der Burgh Assistant Hotel Manager Malie Hotel Utrecht
