Sun, sea, romance and luxury in abundance on Saba

Paradise on earth does exist and it’s called Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic. You’ll find this four-star hotel on the Antillean island of Saba, the smallest inhabited island of the Netherlands. The hotel’s location is unique: in the hills, 400 metres high, and surrounded by sub-tropical flora and fauna. As the hotel is so high up, you have beautiful views across the capital city, The Bottom, and the Caribbean Sea.

Sun, sea, beach and romance, those are the main ingredients of a holiday on Saba. The luxury Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic has more than twelve spaciously laid-out suites, a swimming pool with outside bar and a fantastic restaurant. According to those in the know, Saba is one of the most beautiful areas in the world for diving. So if you love diving, you simply have to pull on your wetsuit and marvel at the underwater world. If you don’t dive, you can snorkel instead in crystal clear water in the abundance of beautiful coral reefs.

Fantastic places for diving and snorkelling

What shall we do today: diving, snorkelling, lounging, swimming or something else? Here are a few tips to help you with this luxurious problem:

Art and culture
Saba does have a museum: the Saba Museum. It is located in a nineteenth-century captain’s house and gives you a good impression of the island’s history. The collection comprises authentic chairs, engravings, paintings and lace. In the English Quarter there are characteristic, brightly coloured Sabanese cottages. This village centre is where the first English colonists established themselves.

Diving and snorkelling
The most popular diving location is the Saba National Marine Park with more than 36 unique diving areas. Each diving area has its own special underwater world that you can discover, from fairy-tale like coral reefs and historic wrecks to volcanic lava streams. As well as different types of coral such as fire coral, stony coral and brain coral there are also a huge amount of fish types, including the small-spotted dogfish, the tiger grouper and the parrotfish. For snorkellers, Well’s Bay is the place to be!

The untouched rain forest on Saba is breathtakingly beautiful. You can take fantastic walks through the Saba National Park, an area of some 43 hectares. Mount Scenery is the highest mountain in the Kingdom of the Netherlands at some 887 metres high and the largest place of interest on the island. You can reach the top and enjoy stunning panoramic views via the Mount Scenery Trail, stairs with 1064 steps.

In Queen’s Gardens Resort – Hampshire Classic you can truly relax by the swimming pool with its sun veranda and outdoor bar. You can also have relaxing private yoga lessons and massages.

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Queen's Gardens Restaurant
The term “local produce” has a different connotation in this restaurant than in a restaurant in the Netherlands. Because here, food caught fresher than fresh from the sea is of course an entirely different experience. Prepare yourself, because all the dishes are absolutely heavenly. Would you like fresh lobster or a perfect fish salad? The culinary feast starts here early in the morning with a fantastic à la carte breakfast that leaves nothing to be desired. From scrambled eggs to French toast: everything is available. For lunch and dinner you can also settle down here to enjoy the delicious food, everything fresh and home-made.

Ocean Bar/Lounge
Of course, there’s nothing better than drinking cocktails with a view of the Caribbean Sea and your loved one. The Ocean Bar/Lounge is surrounded by beautiful mango trees of more than a hundred years old. It has fantastic bar stools and comfortable lounge sofas. You can order cocktails, wine, fresh fruit juice, snacks and much more delicious food and drink. You can also enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The bar/lounge is open from 9.00 am and closes at the same time as the restaurant.

Friends getaway

We have been to Saba MANY times as my husband has family that lives there. We usually stay with family, but this time, we decided to try Queens Garden. The staff really are excellent. They make an effort to get to know you and remember you. They are very helpful and always there to meet your needs and let you relax. Claire, the owner, is the definition of hospitality. Everyone is wonderful. The rooms are very nice, very spacious. Our view was incredible. We felt safe and comfortable. It is luxury for Saba, but not luxury by American standards. I would definitely stay there again. Prices were a little high, but we enjoyed our stay. Location is nice, just far from everything and taking a cab everywhere gets expensive.

Staying at the Queens Garden Resort was an idyllic, almost surreal experience. The island itself is so unique and intriguing, and the resort fits right in. Think of "old Caribbean" - smaller quirky property, perhaps past its prime in a few areas, with staff that are all jacks-of-all-trade. What we liked: unique property, great views, fabulous and super-attentive full-service staff, the "feel", spacious suites open to the outside, jacuzzi in the room (free upgrade!), restaruant food was very good. Slight nits: we preferred Windwardsie over The Bottom, some of the fixtures are a bit dated, restaurant prices were pretty high for dinner. In the end, we very much enjoyed the short stay and are glad that we had the experience, but we probably preferred our other Saba accommodations (at about 1/2 the nightly price). Having said that, I would not hesitate in the least recommending Queens Garden Resort.

“Queen's Gardens Resort is Paradise on Earth!”

My wife, Brandi Himmelreich, and myself have been regular/returning guests to the wonderful Queen's Gardens Resort. Every single time we go it is a whole new unique adventure, from the moment we step into the tiny WinAir plane on St. Maarten, land at the picturesque Saban airport and are picked up by one of Saba's trusty taxi-drivers. Arrival at the hotel is the most welcoming 'home-coming' experience you can have at any hotel. Claire and Hidde -the owners of the hotel- as well as all the staff welcome you with open arms, as if you were long lost cousins. The service is divine and the quality of the food/beverages are 5 star. With the peaceful sounds of what only can be described as 'spa-background music' sung live by the birds and tree-frogs you soon drift away into you most relaxed-self. Whether you stay for 1 night or 10 days, and whether you're an adventurer (diving, hiking, sailing or snorkeling) or looking for a peaceful recovery from the stresses of life, Queen's Gardens will provide you with everything you ask for. I suggest you try if for yourself, as well as Hidde and Claire's other establishments on the Island 'The Deep End' and 'Chez BUBBA - Bistro'.

“Dream wedding at the Queen's Garden”

Where do I begin?!? Most importantly the staff at the Queen's Garden is amazing. They went above and beyond to make sure our stay was seamless and that we had everything we could possibly need. The attention to detail was impeccable. The view...oh the view. The room was comfortable and spacious but the view from every window was stunning. Our room was cleaned daily and always well stocked. We spent the week with all the windows open as the island breeze is relaxing and cool. Note there is no AC but it's not needed or missed. The food was excellent!!! Everything we ate was top notch and prepared with care. Room service, snacks, gourmet Saban lobster dinner was all wonderful! The spa offers a wonderful array of services. I had a massage that was very relaxing. The spa offered an even better view of the mountains and ocean and was picturesque. The pool and pool bar are a must on a daily basis! Again with the wonderful pull side service and snacks delivered free of charge!! You can order any cocktail your heart desires and it will be delivered right to you in the pool. We decided to get married at The Queen's Garden and Claire and her staff took care of every detail. It was just the two of us so the entire staff served as our witnesses. It was quite romantic and quaint. Claire even made our wedding cake!!! One of the best I've ever had. This was one of the best trips we've ever taken and we can not say enough about this resort and the service. We hated to leave. The staff felt like friends and family by the end and we cannot wait to plan our next visit.

“Most Likely the Best Hotel on the Island”

My wife and I and another couple stayed here for two nights in April. One cannot say enough nice things about this place. The setting, the rooms, the service - it is top notch. Claire and her folks really go out of their way to make sure you have an enjoyable stay. If there is one fault with the hotel it is with the food. The hotel owners recently opened a restaurant in Windwardside (Chez Bubba) which has seemed to pull away some of the hotel's food focus. But overall a great hotel on a charming island.
