Sun, sea, romance and luxury in abundance on Saba

Paradise on earth does exist and it’s called Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic. You’ll find this four-star hotel on the Antillean island of Saba, the smallest inhabited island of the Netherlands. The hotel’s location is unique: in the hills, 400 metres high, and surrounded by sub-tropical flora and fauna. As the hotel is so high up, you have beautiful views across the capital city, The Bottom, and the Caribbean Sea.

Sun, sea, beach and romance, those are the main ingredients of a holiday on Saba. The luxury Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic has more than twelve spaciously laid-out suites, a swimming pool with outside bar and a fantastic restaurant. According to those in the know, Saba is one of the most beautiful areas in the world for diving. So if you love diving, you simply have to pull on your wetsuit and marvel at the underwater world. If you don’t dive, you can snorkel instead in crystal clear water in the abundance of beautiful coral reefs.

Fantastic places for diving and snorkelling

What shall we do today: diving, snorkelling, lounging, swimming or something else? Here are a few tips to help you with this luxurious problem:

Art and culture
Saba does have a museum: the Saba Museum. It is located in a nineteenth-century captain’s house and gives you a good impression of the island’s history. The collection comprises authentic chairs, engravings, paintings and lace. In the English Quarter there are characteristic, brightly coloured Sabanese cottages. This village centre is where the first English colonists established themselves.

Diving and snorkelling
The most popular diving location is the Saba National Marine Park with more than 36 unique diving areas. Each diving area has its own special underwater world that you can discover, from fairy-tale like coral reefs and historic wrecks to volcanic lava streams. As well as different types of coral such as fire coral, stony coral and brain coral there are also a huge amount of fish types, including the small-spotted dogfish, the tiger grouper and the parrotfish. For snorkellers, Well’s Bay is the place to be!

The untouched rain forest on Saba is breathtakingly beautiful. You can take fantastic walks through the Saba National Park, an area of some 43 hectares. Mount Scenery is the highest mountain in the Kingdom of the Netherlands at some 887 metres high and the largest place of interest on the island. You can reach the top and enjoy stunning panoramic views via the Mount Scenery Trail, stairs with 1064 steps.

In Queen’s Gardens Resort – Hampshire Classic you can truly relax by the swimming pool with its sun veranda and outdoor bar. You can also have relaxing private yoga lessons and massages.

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Queen's Gardens Restaurant
The term “local produce” has a different connotation in this restaurant than in a restaurant in the Netherlands. Because here, food caught fresher than fresh from the sea is of course an entirely different experience. Prepare yourself, because all the dishes are absolutely heavenly. Would you like fresh lobster or a perfect fish salad? The culinary feast starts here early in the morning with a fantastic à la carte breakfast that leaves nothing to be desired. From scrambled eggs to French toast: everything is available. For lunch and dinner you can also settle down here to enjoy the delicious food, everything fresh and home-made.

Ocean Bar/Lounge
Of course, there’s nothing better than drinking cocktails with a view of the Caribbean Sea and your loved one. The Ocean Bar/Lounge is surrounded by beautiful mango trees of more than a hundred years old. It has fantastic bar stools and comfortable lounge sofas. You can order cocktails, wine, fresh fruit juice, snacks and much more delicious food and drink. You can also enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The bar/lounge is open from 9.00 am and closes at the same time as the restaurant.

Friends getaway
“fun place to get away”

i try to go to remote, quiet places and saba fits that mostly. what is noticeable is how friendly everyone is and you will probably see the same people everywhere you go--hotel workers, taxi drivers, other guests, townspeople. people in town and in cars say hello and even offer to give rides. the location and views from queens gardens are delightful. it was great just to chill out on the living room sofa or in the jacuzzi facing the ocean with the windows open. having meals in the birds nest was so pleasant just hanging out too. the staff are great and you'll see claire taking care of everything, i wonder when she sleeps! she set up sea saba dive for us which was convenient since the training for the non-certified diver takes places right at the hotel pool, and our dive instructor was awesome. be sure to wear good sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes for any of the trails. the spa is an open room facing the ocean, beautiful setting. if you're sensitive to sun, see if you can have the treatment table moved out of the sun. this hotel is not in the main city (windwardside). it is a one-hour (challenging) hike to windward or cab ride. the bottom town is about a 10-min walk away (uphill all the way back). there are a handful of restaurants and a few small markets as well as the local artists shop (lace, fabrics, handmade jam and saba spice). and also the treacherous practically vertical ladder steps hike is not far (good sunset spot). probably due to the remoteness, the hotel ran out of food items often (butter, milk, bacon, etc). definitely try to claim a lobster when they come in. i've read that saba doesn't get mosquitoes, but i got bit 5x/day and closed the windows at night. on the weekends, one of the restaurants (topogigo) in the bottom BLASTS their music until 2am or so. the music is audible even with earplugs. many locals also like to blast their music from their cars but there isn't that much road traffic near this hotel. the island is eco so faucet water is not potable (collected rain water) and toilet paper shouldn't go in the toilet. the showers have very low pressure, so if you get a spa treatment, be sure to use the wonderful rain shower in there. a serviceman comes by to pump water from the top of the hill into a cistern below. the process takes several hours and is very very noisy. hopefully you'll have activities planned while this takes place if you are in a room that is near the road up top. wifi was slow/spotty if that is important for you while here. cell phone service was pretty much non-existent with our US carriers. rooms with jacuzzi, some type of motor sound buzzes very loudly. i could see a fussy traveler having problems visiting saba but it's really a great place to relax, enjoy nature, unplug and move at a slower pace (except the hikes are very strenuous).

“Excellent redefined!”

Visiting Saba is an experience in itself. Staying at The Queen's made it an absolutely delightful experience. Hidde and Claire put excellence in everything that is offered at the Hotel. From the food prepared by the top chefs, the fantastic restaurant staff managed by the dedicated Duko, the great spa, to the always helpful Mary at the reception, it's all excellent. I can recommend this hotel to everyone.

“Just excellent”

I stayed at the hotel in November 2014. Saba is a beautiful Island and so is the hotel. Built in traditional Saban architecture, on a hillside overlooking the Island´s capital village The Bottom, this hotel offers beautiful suites with a view and a very good restaurant. I liked the jaccuzi in my room a lot, it´s build in a patio/balcony. The room is nicely furnished, has a coffee/tea making facility and a refrigerator in the living room which is separated from the master bedroom. At night, you can leave the sliding windows open for a nice fresh breeze (there´s no airco but ceiling fans). Fortunately, there were no mosquitos. I had dinner and breakfast on the restaurant´s terrace, good food and a good service. The Dutch waiters and waitresses are very professional and friendly. I would certainly recommend a visit to this special island and a stay in this hotel

“Relaxed perfection”

This place is a true gem. There are not many places that you can arrive at, get a hug and welcome...and they actually mean it! Claire graciously helped us to reschedule our honeymoon when we had to cancel due to a family emergency, literally the morning we were supposed to be arriving in Saba. They worked with us to arrange new dates without any problem. We specifically picked Saba to honeymoon because we wanted to dive on an island that is very gay-friendly and we found that to be true every where we were on the island. The arranged pickup driver was waiting for us at the airport and took us on the short, switchbacks, and interesting drive on 'the road', telling us some Saba history along the way. The Queen's garden is perfect size, small yet comfortable to have your own space with large spacious suites. We stayed in a king superior with the hot tub, which I would recommend. The rooms are spotless and are kept that way all throughout the week by the staff. We always felt safe and some nights left our door open just to get the mountain breeze. The hotel is both eco-minded and ecofriendly. The entire staff, while small, is extraordinary, and we enjoyed each and every one of them and felt like we were old friends by the end of the week. We always felt taken care by all of the staff to make sure everything was fine, without us feeling like we were being watched upon or hounded. Everyone at the resort was friendly, and we met a number of really nice folks also vacationing on Saba from the States and Europe. Hiking trails are right out the front door of the hotel, although bring hiking shoes if you're planning on doing some amazing, but steep, hiking. Hiking sticks are at the hotel (and highly recommended!). The food at the restaurant is probably the best on the island. We had breakfast each morning, lunch on our dive days, and three dinners at the hotel, including a dinner in the bird's nest which is a romantic table on the tree platform. All meals at the resort where great. The pool area is well kept, relaxing, and very clean with beautiful views from all parts of the property. We did 8 tanks of diving over 5 days, all arranged through the hotel with Sea Saba. The diving is spectacular, to say the least. All in all, everyone at Queen's garden made for a very special honeymoon and a special thanks to everyone, Claire, Hidde, Meri, and the entire staff for providing such an enjoyable and relaxing time. We will be back for sure.

“Service, Hospitality and Then More Service”

My Wife and I just completed a week long stay Queens Garden. We stayed there while scuba diving with Sea Saba, which I will review separately. The hotel is in a wonderful location where from what I could tell, offers each room a lovely view of the mountains, the sea, and an overview of "The Bottom." From the minute we arrived we felt like long lost friends not just customers. The hotel grounds are very nice, slightly rustic, (in that Caribbean type way), and totally relaxing. It is quiet, low key and very friendly. After the first few hours everyone knew each other, and the conversations were numerous and varied. They have a lovely little pool, and many of the suites have a private hot tub, which I recommend. It was great jumping in the tub late at night or when we returned from diving. The restaurant serves good food, well prepared and as I said the service was excellent. No matter what time we came back to hotel someone was there to great us, offer us something or help in some way. My wife and I were in need of some assistance a few times, (Dramamine, a lost screw for the camera housing, etc.) and each time they were very helpful, and did not seem in the least bit put out by the request. The cost was reasonable for all that we received and would highly recommend them if you are looking to go to Saba for a quiet Caribbean vacation. The island of Saba is like going to a small town, everyone knows each other, the taxi cab drives will quickly become your friends, the roads are so steep that you really won't walk from one place to another, however, the hiking is very good. The Queens Garden is located right near a train that will take you to the other town on the island, (Windward Side) although the train is intermediate. It starts out pretty steep and then meanders up and down to the other town. Expect that will take about an hour and half. Bring plenty of water and walking stick, you will need both. Eating on Saba... Make reservations, the hotel will set you up, best food and service was at Brigadoon, best food with poor service was Eden, and avoid Scout's Place like the plague. Last word on Queens Garden is that we loved it, and highly recommend it to those who like a small intimate hotel with some peace and quiet and lovely vistas.
