Sun, sea, romance and luxury in abundance on Saba

Paradise on earth does exist and it’s called Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic. You’ll find this four-star hotel on the Antillean island of Saba, the smallest inhabited island of the Netherlands. The hotel’s location is unique: in the hills, 400 metres high, and surrounded by sub-tropical flora and fauna. As the hotel is so high up, you have beautiful views across the capital city, The Bottom, and the Caribbean Sea.

Sun, sea, beach and romance, those are the main ingredients of a holiday on Saba. The luxury Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic has more than twelve spaciously laid-out suites, a swimming pool with outside bar and a fantastic restaurant. According to those in the know, Saba is one of the most beautiful areas in the world for diving. So if you love diving, you simply have to pull on your wetsuit and marvel at the underwater world. If you don’t dive, you can snorkel instead in crystal clear water in the abundance of beautiful coral reefs.

Fantastic places for diving and snorkelling

What shall we do today: diving, snorkelling, lounging, swimming or something else? Here are a few tips to help you with this luxurious problem:

Art and culture
Saba does have a museum: the Saba Museum. It is located in a nineteenth-century captain’s house and gives you a good impression of the island’s history. The collection comprises authentic chairs, engravings, paintings and lace. In the English Quarter there are characteristic, brightly coloured Sabanese cottages. This village centre is where the first English colonists established themselves.

Diving and snorkelling
The most popular diving location is the Saba National Marine Park with more than 36 unique diving areas. Each diving area has its own special underwater world that you can discover, from fairy-tale like coral reefs and historic wrecks to volcanic lava streams. As well as different types of coral such as fire coral, stony coral and brain coral there are also a huge amount of fish types, including the small-spotted dogfish, the tiger grouper and the parrotfish. For snorkellers, Well’s Bay is the place to be!

The untouched rain forest on Saba is breathtakingly beautiful. You can take fantastic walks through the Saba National Park, an area of some 43 hectares. Mount Scenery is the highest mountain in the Kingdom of the Netherlands at some 887 metres high and the largest place of interest on the island. You can reach the top and enjoy stunning panoramic views via the Mount Scenery Trail, stairs with 1064 steps.

In Queen’s Gardens Resort – Hampshire Classic you can truly relax by the swimming pool with its sun veranda and outdoor bar. You can also have relaxing private yoga lessons and massages.

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Queen's Gardens Restaurant
The term “local produce” has a different connotation in this restaurant than in a restaurant in the Netherlands. Because here, food caught fresher than fresh from the sea is of course an entirely different experience. Prepare yourself, because all the dishes are absolutely heavenly. Would you like fresh lobster or a perfect fish salad? The culinary feast starts here early in the morning with a fantastic à la carte breakfast that leaves nothing to be desired. From scrambled eggs to French toast: everything is available. For lunch and dinner you can also settle down here to enjoy the delicious food, everything fresh and home-made.

Ocean Bar/Lounge
Of course, there’s nothing better than drinking cocktails with a view of the Caribbean Sea and your loved one. The Ocean Bar/Lounge is surrounded by beautiful mango trees of more than a hundred years old. It has fantastic bar stools and comfortable lounge sofas. You can order cocktails, wine, fresh fruit juice, snacks and much more delicious food and drink. You can also enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The bar/lounge is open from 9.00 am and closes at the same time as the restaurant.

“The best kept secret in the Caribbean”

I don't even know where to start about this beautiful hotel. The staff is simply the best. Very attentive but not overly attentive. The view from all the rooms is beautiful overlooking the rain forest. You will wake up in the morning with a cool breeze blowing through your room and the sounds of birds chirping. The owners Claire and Hidde know how to make you feel like you are the only people in the Resort. Their attention to detail is perfect. The food is fabulous. The lobster was by far my favorite. There is a large tank holding all the little delicious creatures so you can pick which one you want. During my stay we had the pleasure of seeing Braximusic. Such a beautiful, romantic setting and listening to two souls sing as one, you can't have a more perfect evening. This is one Resort you must put on your bucket list. I promise you will not be disappointed and you will be planning your next visit before you leave.

“Amazing Resort and Island”

Saba is an island that can quickly get into your blood. Easy, beautiful, and incredibly friendly. Queen's Gardens is a beautiful setting with incredible service. Claire runs the resort with great attention to detail. Her staff bends over backwards to make sure everything is perfect...and they seem genuinely happy. They feel like family...and make everyone feel welcome and at home. My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary there...and from the minute we arrived we knew we picked the right place. The food was phenomenal...the hot tub facing the mountains and ocean...all breathtaking. Not to mention some of the best scuba in the world...and incredible hiking through the rain forest. We will be back! Thanks Claire and staff!

“We stayed for eight days”

The hotel is in a cooler region, above the "bottom" which is the town at the bottom of the crater. Exceptional staff. Claire, the owner, was extremely helpful and had a cab meet us at the airport, courtesy of the Hotel. On my wife's birthday, we had pizza with a pyrotechnic candle that the Hotel put together. If you are going to Saba, and there are many reasons to visit, this is the place to stay.

“Definitely a great stay”

From beginning to end a wonderful stay. We just left today. We were greeted immediately as out taxi drove up and staff took our bags. Service was excellent. We were given cold punch and wet towel upon arrival and given a short tour around the lovely property. We stayed with our 3 children in what they called the Birds Nest which is a large 1 bedroom suite that has a loft with 2 twin beds which the kids loved! They brought an additional roll away bed which I took matress off the frame and carried it upstairs so the 3 could sleep in the same room. The room doesn't have screens but there are no mosquitos so we slept with all the windows open and it was breezy and comfortable. It is hot and humid but the breeze was very nice. The frogs chorus you to sleep and roosters may wake you up. Claire, the owner, was fabulous and really the service was top notch. It has a nice restaurant and it is near the end of some hikes ; I would recommend stopping there to drink or eat after a hike. The feel is very relaxing and tranquil as we are learning on this entire beautiful island.

Friends getaway

We have been to Saba MANY times as my husband has family that lives there. We usually stay with family, but this time, we decided to try Queens Garden. The staff really are excellent. They make an effort to get to know you and remember you. They are very helpful and always there to meet your needs and let you relax. Claire, the owner, is the definition of hospitality. Everyone is wonderful. The rooms are very nice, very spacious. Our view was incredible. We felt safe and comfortable. It is luxury for Saba, but not luxury by American standards. I would definitely stay there again. Prices were a little high, but we enjoyed our stay. Location is nice, just far from everything and taking a cab everywhere gets expensive.
