Sun, sea, romance and luxury in abundance on Saba

Paradise on earth does exist and it’s called Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic. You’ll find this five-star hotel on the Antillean island of Saba, the smallest inhabited island of the Netherlands. The hotel’s location is unique: in the hills, 400 metres high, and surrounded by sub-tropical flora and fauna. As the hotel is so high up, you have beautiful views across the capital city, The Bottom, and the Caribbean Sea.

Sun, sea, beach and romance, those are the main ingredients of a holiday on Saba. The luxury Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic has more than twelve spaciously laid-out suites, a swimming pool with outside bar and a fantastic restaurant. According to those in the know, Saba is one of the most beautiful areas in the world for diving. So if you love diving, you simply have to pull on your wetsuit and marvel at the underwater world. If you don’t dive, you can snorkel instead in crystal clear water in the abundance of beautiful coral reefs.

Fantastic places for diving and snorkelling

What shall we do today: diving, snorkelling, lounging, swimming or something else? Here are a few tips to help you with this luxurious problem:

Art and culture
Saba does have a museum: the Saba Museum. It is located in a nineteenth-century captain’s house and gives you a good impression of the island’s history. The collection comprises authentic chairs, engravings, paintings and lace. In the English Quarter there are characteristic, brightly coloured Sabanese cottages. This village centre is where the first English colonists established themselves.

Diving and snorkelling
The most popular diving location is the Saba National Marine Park with more than 36 unique diving areas. Each diving area has its own special underwater world that you can discover, from fairy-tale like coral reefs and historic wrecks to volcanic lava streams. As well as different types of coral such as fire coral, stony coral and brain coral there are also a huge amount of fish types, including the small-spotted dogfish, the tiger grouper and the parrotfish. For snorkellers, Well’s Bay is the place to be!

Nature
The untouched rain forest on Saba is breathtakingly beautiful. You can take fantastic walks through the Saba National Park, an area of some 43 hectares. Mount Scenery is the highest mountain in the Kingdom of the Netherlands at some 887 metres high and the largest place of interest on the island. You can reach the top and enjoy stunning panoramic views via the Mount Scenery Trail, stairs with 1064 steps.

Relaxation
In Queen’s Gardens Resort – Hampshire Classic you can truly relax by the swimming pool with its sun veranda and outdoor bar. You can also have relaxing private yoga lessons and massages.

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Queen's Gardens Restaurant
The term “local produce” has a different connotation in this restaurant than in a restaurant in the Netherlands. Because here, food caught fresher than fresh from the sea is of course an entirely different experience. Prepare yourself, because all the dishes are absolutely heavenly. Would you like fresh lobster or a perfect fish salad? The culinary feast starts here early in the morning with a fantastic à la carte breakfast that leaves nothing to be desired. From scrambled eggs to French toast: everything is available. For lunch and dinner you can also settle down here to enjoy the delicious food, everything fresh and home-made.

Ocean Bar/Lounge
Of course, there’s nothing better than drinking cocktails with a view of the Caribbean Sea and your loved one. The Ocean Bar/Lounge is surrounded by beautiful mango trees of more than a hundred years old. It has fantastic bar stools and comfortable lounge sofas. You can order cocktails, wine, fresh fruit juice, snacks and much more delicious food and drink. You can also enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The bar/lounge is open from 9.00 am and closes at the same time as the restaurant.

“Absolute paradise”

My wife and I spent last weekend at the Queen's Gardens Resort and wished we never left. The resort is located near the top of the island in Bottom, just below a gorgeous rainforest with several moderate hiking trails. Claire & Hedde (Owners & Managers) have completly reconceptualized the resort in the past 7 years and should you be lucky enough to stay there, you will be as close to paradise as you have ever been. Claire and Hedde keep a very keen eye on their well trained staff to ensure everything is perfect, with the attention of a Maestro with his orchestra. Umbelievable! We stayed in beautiful Suite #6 which was perfect for us with a beautiful view. Food, accomodation, service and attention to details is a perfect 10. Don't miss it, life is too short! “special”

The best bit was Claire and Hidde's personal service - they make you feel like you are the only guest staying there. Little things like running out to greet you as you step out of the taxi, choosing walking sticks for the hikes, and letting us play with the puppy :-) They anticipate needs - like asking/suggesting at breakfast where you might want to eat dinner.

“Absolutely Stunning”

We stayed at Queen’s Garden in late March 2014 and it was absolutely stunning. The location of this hotel and its views are spectacular. Claire and Hidde were the perfect hosts, attending to everything for us - calling taxis, setting up snorkeling tours, providing restaurant suggestions and making reservations, etc. It should be noted that you must take a taxi into the town of Windwardside from Queen’s Gardens. No chance you can walk there on the road, but you can take a one hour hiking trail from the hotel directly into Windwardside. Everyone on the hotel staff was wonderful - Lily, Duco, Marlous and Karlyn were extremely attentive and friendly. The food was outstanding. Indonesian night on Saturday is definitely NOT to be missed. And the black squid ink pasta with shrimp and lobster sauce was to die for. We stayed in Suite 11 and it had both views of the ocean and the rain forest. There are many hiking trails on Saba, and we did the Sandy Cruz hike, which was beautiful. We even saw a few black snakes along the trail. The jacuzzi in the room was the perfect ending to our hike. Saba is an incredibly unique island, but if you’re a big beach lover, please note that there are no beaches on Saba. Most travelers to Saba are avid scuba divers. Would definitely recommend Queen’s Garden to anyone traveling to Saba. And hopefully Claire’s adorable dog Casper will let you pet him. He was a bit skittish around us. Max was very friendly though.

“Incredible place”

Queens Resort was truly fantastic. My husband and I went in January for our honeymoon and we wish we could have stayed for far longer. The room was incredible (along with the view) and the staff were always there to help or make our stay even better. The food was extremely good and we enjoyed many dinners in the restaurant. Saba Island itself is a very special place in the world - we will be back.

“Paradise”

We been here for three days to celebrate my birthday and to do some diving. In one word: AMAZING! Our room was beautiful, spacious and a view to die for! The jacuzzi was a real treat after a day diving. The staff was extremely helpfull and friendly. Nothing was too much and also advised other places to go and arranged for the reservations including taxi. We had lunch twice and once dinner, which were all good! Cocktails, bar snacks and wines were excellent as well! Saba is also a real paradise! Diving is amazing, people are really friendly and the few restaurants you have are really nice! We recommend this resort and Saba to anyone!
