Sun, sea, romance and luxury in abundance on Saba

Paradise on earth does exist and it’s called Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic. You’ll find this five-star hotel on the Antillean island of Saba, the smallest inhabited island of the Netherlands. The hotel’s location is unique: in the hills, 400 metres high, and surrounded by sub-tropical flora and fauna. As the hotel is so high up, you have beautiful views across the capital city, The Bottom, and the Caribbean Sea.

Sun, sea, beach and romance, those are the main ingredients of a holiday on Saba. The luxury Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic has more than twelve spaciously laid-out suites, a swimming pool with outside bar and a fantastic restaurant. According to those in the know, Saba is one of the most beautiful areas in the world for diving. So if you love diving, you simply have to pull on your wetsuit and marvel at the underwater world. If you don’t dive, you can snorkel instead in crystal clear water in the abundance of beautiful coral reefs.

Fantastic places for diving and snorkelling

What shall we do today: diving, snorkelling, lounging, swimming or something else? Here are a few tips to help you with this luxurious problem:

Art and culture
Saba does have a museum: the Saba Museum. It is located in a nineteenth-century captain’s house and gives you a good impression of the island’s history. The collection comprises authentic chairs, engravings, paintings and lace. In the English Quarter there are characteristic, brightly coloured Sabanese cottages. This village centre is where the first English colonists established themselves.

Diving and snorkelling
The most popular diving location is the Saba National Marine Park with more than 36 unique diving areas. Each diving area has its own special underwater world that you can discover, from fairy-tale like coral reefs and historic wrecks to volcanic lava streams. As well as different types of coral such as fire coral, stony coral and brain coral there are also a huge amount of fish types, including the small-spotted dogfish, the tiger grouper and the parrotfish. For snorkellers, Well’s Bay is the place to be!

Nature
The untouched rain forest on Saba is breathtakingly beautiful. You can take fantastic walks through the Saba National Park, an area of some 43 hectares. Mount Scenery is the highest mountain in the Kingdom of the Netherlands at some 887 metres high and the largest place of interest on the island. You can reach the top and enjoy stunning panoramic views via the Mount Scenery Trail, stairs with 1064 steps.

Relaxation
In Queen’s Gardens Resort – Hampshire Classic you can truly relax by the swimming pool with its sun veranda and outdoor bar. You can also have relaxing private yoga lessons and massages.

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Queen's Gardens Restaurant
The term “local produce” has a different connotation in this restaurant than in a restaurant in the Netherlands. Because here, food caught fresher than fresh from the sea is of course an entirely different experience. Prepare yourself, because all the dishes are absolutely heavenly. Would you like fresh lobster or a perfect fish salad? The culinary feast starts here early in the morning with a fantastic à la carte breakfast that leaves nothing to be desired. From scrambled eggs to French toast: everything is available. For lunch and dinner you can also settle down here to enjoy the delicious food, everything fresh and home-made.

Ocean Bar/Lounge
Of course, there’s nothing better than drinking cocktails with a view of the Caribbean Sea and your loved one. The Ocean Bar/Lounge is surrounded by beautiful mango trees of more than a hundred years old. It has fantastic bar stools and comfortable lounge sofas. You can order cocktails, wine, fresh fruit juice, snacks and much more delicious food and drink. You can also enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The bar/lounge is open from 9.00 am and closes at the same time as the restaurant.

“The best service”

Staff make you feel welcome from the moment you step on the property. Beautiful hotel and view. Food and drinks are great but expensive. We went elsewhere for brunch after the first day. I lived on Saba for almost 2 years and booked by Mom and her boyfriend here while they were visiting. If you are visiting Saba I would recommend to stay here but remember that you ARE in the caribbean and there may or may not be cockroaches!

“The best hotel for relaxing comfortably in the beauty of Saba!”

My husband and I spent a week at Queen's Garden in early July 2014 and had the vacation of a lifetime! From the moment we arrived at the resort, we were greeted by Claire and Hidde and settled into our wonderful room. The service at Queen's Garden was spectacular. Duko and the ladies always made sure we had everything we needed (reservations for dinner, towels for snorkeling, etc). Every morning we enjoyed breakfast at the hotel which was always delicious and relaxing. The service team checked to make sure we had plenty to do each day and provided suggestions. We relaxed at the pool some of the time, but greatly enjoyed the beautiful natural scenery of Saba. We enjoyed hiking right from the hotel and made it up Mount Scenery. It is hard to describe the natural beauty of the island -- from the orchids, to avocados falling from trees, Mt Scenery, hiking trails, tide pools, snorkeling, there are so many things to do! Dinner at the hotel in the bird's nest was one of the highlights of the trip. The views from the hotel are amazing. We had one of the rooms with a Jacuzzi which we enjoyed on several occasions. Claire delivered groceries to our room which helped satisfy our snacking needs. The rooms were spacious and comfortable with a beautiful breeze the whole time. The hotel is a short uphill walk from The Bottom where there are a few restaurants. We ate at Angelino's twice in the Bottom for some casual dining. Windwardside has a lot more shops and places to eat. We enjoyed exploring Windwardside. I long for the day when I can return to Saba and stay at the Queen's Garden Resort again - it was the best week of my life! For a couple who enjoys nature and needs to find a place to relax, there is none better than Queen's Garden.

“We felt like royalty!”

This was our first trip to Saba. Claire from Queen's Gardens made making the arrangements for the hotel and scuba diving so easy! Our first impression of the island was the taxi driver that Claire sent for us who gave the full history of the island. Claire and the staff were constantly taking care of us and made sure we always: ate 3 meals a day (even if not at the resort), had fresh towels for diving, and had directions for every hike we were adventuring on. We loved hanging out with Duko at the hotel and in town - what a fun guy! The room, jacuzzi and views were amazing! As a diver, the fact that Queens Gardens partnered with Saba Deep made each day of diving stress free. Saba Deep rinsed and kept our gear each night to dry. The final day of diving, they kept the gear overnight to dry and brought it to our hotel room the next day. We would never be stay anywhere else on Saba after this experience!

“Lovely hotel”

Its been my third time on Saba in about 10 years, not much has changed over the years. Saba is a laid back island with beautiful scenery and friendly people, virtually no crime and almost no traffic. This is the first time I stayed at Queens Garden, it was always a bit too pricy for my taste but I have to be honest it's worth every penny. The staff is very friendly and the rooms and resort are clean and breathtaking. The resort lies on top of a hill and this brings with it some spectacular views, because of the elevation its not as hot as some of the other Caribbean islands. The only thing bad about this resort is the food, it's simple and overpriced. I would recommend going to one of the restaurants in Windwardside, these are amongst the best, just ask around. Queens Garden gives you a unique experience, one you will never forget.
