Sun, sea, romance and luxury in abundance on Saba

Paradise on earth does exist and it’s called Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic. You’ll find this four-star hotel on the Antillean island of Saba, the smallest inhabited island of the Netherlands. The hotel’s location is unique: in the hills, 400 metres high, and surrounded by sub-tropical flora and fauna. As the hotel is so high up, you have beautiful views across the capital city, The Bottom, and the Caribbean Sea.

Sun, sea, beach and romance, those are the main ingredients of a holiday on Saba. The luxury Queen’s Gardens Resort - Hampshire Classic has more than twelve spaciously laid-out suites, a swimming pool with outside bar and a fantastic restaurant. According to those in the know, Saba is one of the most beautiful areas in the world for diving. So if you love diving, you simply have to pull on your wetsuit and marvel at the underwater world. If you don’t dive, you can snorkel instead in crystal clear water in the abundance of beautiful coral reefs.

Fantastic places for diving and snorkelling

What shall we do today: diving, snorkelling, lounging, swimming or something else? Here are a few tips to help you with this luxurious problem:

Art and culture
Saba does have a museum: the Saba Museum. It is located in a nineteenth-century captain’s house and gives you a good impression of the island’s history. The collection comprises authentic chairs, engravings, paintings and lace. In the English Quarter there are characteristic, brightly coloured Sabanese cottages. This village centre is where the first English colonists established themselves.

Diving and snorkelling
The most popular diving location is the Saba National Marine Park with more than 36 unique diving areas. Each diving area has its own special underwater world that you can discover, from fairy-tale like coral reefs and historic wrecks to volcanic lava streams. As well as different types of coral such as fire coral, stony coral and brain coral there are also a huge amount of fish types, including the small-spotted dogfish, the tiger grouper and the parrotfish. For snorkellers, Well’s Bay is the place to be!

Nature
The untouched rain forest on Saba is breathtakingly beautiful. You can take fantastic walks through the Saba National Park, an area of some 43 hectares. Mount Scenery is the highest mountain in the Kingdom of the Netherlands at some 887 metres high and the largest place of interest on the island. You can reach the top and enjoy stunning panoramic views via the Mount Scenery Trail, stairs with 1064 steps.

Relaxation
In Queen’s Gardens Resort – Hampshire Classic you can truly relax by the swimming pool with its sun veranda and outdoor bar. You can also have relaxing private yoga lessons and massages.

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Delicious fresh lobster, straight from the sea!

Queen's Gardens Restaurant
The term “local produce” has a different connotation in this restaurant than in a restaurant in the Netherlands. Because here, food caught fresher than fresh from the sea is of course an entirely different experience. Prepare yourself, because all the dishes are absolutely heavenly. Would you like fresh lobster or a perfect fish salad? The culinary feast starts here early in the morning with a fantastic à la carte breakfast that leaves nothing to be desired. From scrambled eggs to French toast: everything is available. For lunch and dinner you can also settle down here to enjoy the delicious food, everything fresh and home-made.

Ocean Bar/Lounge
Of course, there’s nothing better than drinking cocktails with a view of the Caribbean Sea and your loved one. The Ocean Bar/Lounge is surrounded by beautiful mango trees of more than a hundred years old. It has fantastic bar stools and comfortable lounge sofas. You can order cocktails, wine, fresh fruit juice, snacks and much more delicious food and drink. You can also enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here. The bar/lounge is open from 9.00 am and closes at the same time as the restaurant.

“The Crown Jewel of Saba”

It is true that Saba is the unspoiled Queen of the Caribbean and her Crown Jewel is the Queen’s Garden Resort. I was stunned by the hotel’s beautiful setting, intimacy, amenities and, most importantly, its personal, friendly service. Its red roofs are perched in the hills above The Bottom, Saba’s capital and about 30 minutes from the airport. There are 12 rooms and the three of us stayed in the Queen Suite which had a loft bedroom and en suite hot tub overlooking the ocean and mountains. The owners, Claire and her husband, and their amazing staff, are attuned to every detail of your visit, from greeting you upon arrival, arranging any transport or activity, making sure you have your towels and lunch for your diving trips and serving homemade mango popsicles while you are reading poolside. We did not have time to sample the many tempting spa treatments so will have to save that for next time. The dining experience was over the top. Starting with the European or American breakfast choices to the lunch which boasts the best burgers in the Caribbean and last, but certainly not least, dinner. Their chef creates a new five course menu each week or choose from extensive a la carte items including Saba lobster or Wagyu beef. All our meals were incredible from the amuse-bouche to the trio of crème brulee. Saba is all about the diving and hiking so you will have an active vacation but at the end of the day, you can be guaranteed a friendly welcome when you return to the Queen’s Garden to relax and recharge for the next day’s adventures on this gem of an island.

“Jewel of the Caribbean”

Although Saba is supposed to be the "unspoiled queen" of the Caribbean, you get totally and completely spoiled at Queens Garden Resort. Claire, Hidde, and their incredibly attentive staff, attend to needs and wants you didn't even know you had. Every bite of food we ate at the picturesque restaurant was incredible, and sitting in the tree house of the mango tree was transcendent . The outdoor jacuzzi, which we used 2 to 3 times/day was an added bonus that further set this property into a category of its own. If you want a truly special experience on an unspoiled and remarkable island, Queens Garden is your best choice.

“Shhh...Don't tell anyone...too good to be true!!”

What a gem!! I almost don't want to be too specific with details of our amazing visit because it takes away from the magnificence if everyone knows about it. From Eddie there to pick us up from the airport, the warm welcome once we arrived to the resort, meeting some locals and singing karaoke all night with a few of the med students...to hiking to the top of Mt. Scenery. WOW!!! Thank you Coochie for taking us under your wing and inviting us to experience your friends and family!! Stan, you're the best door guy ever!! ;) Duco, Marcoes, and Emmel thank you for your hospitality and excellent service!! Omar, you really had me going there for a minute... The Godfather...you're funny!! We may be exhausted, but it was so worth it!! Claire, once again thank you!! Give Casper and Max a kiss for me and don't change a thing. It was a personal pleasure and honor to meet you and get to know you. We hope our paths cross again during this lifetime and if not...see you in the next one!! Much love!!

“Where luxury meets intimacy”

A high end stay is usually defined by a certain level of servitude, almost a subservience to the guests as if they are honored VIP's. Saba in general, and in particular QGR are a slight exception to that rule. Don't get me wrong, the service is top drawer and the attentiveness of the staff is extremely detailed without ever being overbearing, but the most pleasant surprise was that we got to know them all as people. A personal, almost intimate connection with the resort was born. If that's not for you, don't worry, I'm sure they will respect your boundaries and cater to your every needs. But for us it was great to know the people who were organizing our days, preparing our food, mixing our drinks etcetera. In particular, if you get a chance to know Duco, you will not be disappointed. He is a consummate professional in the hospitality world, but he's also the kind of character you hope to encounter on your global adventures. Also, the owners Claire and Hedda are some of the finest people you can hope to meet on your travels. Ok, enough gushing about the people, on to the facilities. The setting of the hotel is idyllic, wiht a 12 room resort tucked into a mid-mountain nook with perfect scenery. The rooms themselves are spacious and comfortable, all with great views, if maybe a bit lacking in top level refinements. The inroom jacuzzi's with open air views of the island below make up for any specific lacks the rest of the suite has. The pool is refreshing and comfortable. The spa experience was exceptional. The restaurant was as good as any we had in this part of the caribbean. Keep in mind Saba is not a lavish place so QGR measures the perfect balance of eco-integration with well-appointed comforts. This is not the W or the Viceroy, thank god. This is perfectly Saba. Worth mentioning that QGR is perfectly located for some great romantic hikes around the island, and they are happy to provide you with an excellent picnic lunch. This place is worth a visit.
