Best City Boutique Hotel

If you want to relax for a weekend and also enjoy Amsterdam to the full, then a stay in the luxury The Toren - Hampshire Classic is highly-recommended. The hotel was proclaimed “Best City Boutique Hotel” during the 2012 Boutique Hotel Awards; a prize given for the unprecedented service that guests receive 24 hours a day: from a glass of champagne in the room to recommendations for good restaurants and places of interest in the area.

The Toren – Hampshire Classic is in an exceptionally good location. In a 17th Century canal building on Keizersgracht with Anne Frank Huis, Westerkerk, Jordaan and De 9 Straatjes around the corner. The Dam is also not far from the hotel. There are a number of interesting places of interest here: Nationaal Monument, De Nieuwe Kerk with its much-discussed exhibitions, and Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam.

On Keizersgracht with Jordaan around the corner

There is more than enough to see and do to fill an entire weekend in the immediate vicinity of The Toren - Hampshire Classic. The hotel is located on Keizersgracht, a stone’s throw from the convivial Jordaan, Wersterkerk and Westertoren, which features in many tear-jerking folksongs. Tips for great and interesting excursions in the area:

Museums
Anne Frank Huis is literally around the corner from the hotel. If you have never been in the Achterhuis, the place where Anne Frank wrote her diary during the Second World War, then this is the ultimate opportunity. Tassenmuseum Hendrikje on Herengracht is the largest bag museum in the world and has an impressive collection of more than four thousand bags, purses, cases and pouches.

Places of interest
Westerkerk with the world-famous Westertoren is very close to the hotel. You can go in all directions on the Dam for fascinating places of interest. There’s the Nationaal Monument where the Queen lays a wreath every four years on 4 May during the Nationale Dodenherdenking. Here too is De Nieuwe Kerk with its interesting exhibitions and Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam, the official reception palace of the Koninklijk Huis. You’ll find Felix Meritis on Keizersgracht. Apart from being a beautiful, historic building, you can join various lectures, debates, demonstrations and workshops here.

Shopping
De 9 Straatjes really shouldn’t be missed. In these nine small streets there are unique, beautiful shops and you can also enjoy delicious lunch and dinner here. Other great places for shopping in the area are Magna Plaza shopping centre and De Bijenkorf on the Dam.

Children
Towards Central Station on Oosterdok, you’ll find Science Center Nemo. This interactive museum is great for children who like science and who dare to conduct exciting experiments. In Madame Tussauds on the Dam, you can view celebrities from close quarters and even pose for a photograph with some of the stars.

Room service from a fantastic French Head Chef

Room service from a fantastic French Head Chef

The Toren – Hampshire Classic doesn’t have its own restaurant but does have extremely close connections with Christophe’ restaurant. The Head Chef of this renowned restaurant on Leliegracht, around the corner from the hotel, is Jean-Joël Bonsens. This Frenchman used to work in the kitchen of the French top restaurant, Les Templiers in Loiret, and worked for the world-famous Head Chef, Paul Bocuse in Lyon.
What’s special about this cooperation is that you don’t even need to leave the hotel to enjoy Jean-Joël’s cooking. You can place your order via the room service menu and have this served in your room. Should you prefer to dine in the stylish lounge, then that’s possible too. Or you can also book a table in Christophe’ Restaurant itself.

“Perfect for couples”

I chose this hotel based on Tripadvisor ranking - it totally deserves it. Best location in a beautiful quiet neighbourhood, yet walking distance to the main attractions. Small hotel with such a cosey atmosphere. Jacuzzi in the room is so special. Great stuff, literally all of them so nice and polite, reception stuff (special thanks goes to Henry who welcomed us at the arrival), breakfeast and bar stuff, the maids... Next time we go to Amsterdam, would not think of any other hotel.

“Awesome and Convenient”

My friend and I stayed here for two weeks making this our "home base" while traveling Europe. We started in the main hotel and then were upgraded to the larger room with private bath a few doors down. Location was fantastic. The entire hotel staff including bartenders were the best I've ever encountered. Food was fantastic and prices were righteous. Definitely look forward to visiting again, I like this place better than The Avenues or The Art Gallery Hotel.

“Definitely unique”

In a city full of interesting hotels, this one is a notch above. There are definitely some flaws, but overall a very nice hotel with a unique take. First, location. I can't give it high marks on the location because I like the city center, Dam square part of Amsterdam. It is not very close to this area. However, if you are looking for more of a quiet, "quaint" area of the city to stay, this would be perfect. There is some decent shopping close by, but I found that there weren't that many restaurants close. Now common areas are the really unique part of this hotel. I have never been to one, but this hotel is set up as I would think a high class brothel looks like. Lots of old wood furniture, dark lights, heavy wood bar. Not saying it's not nice, but it definitely gives off a vibe. I really liked the smoking lounge, not many places do that anymore and it is a nice touch. The hotel itself is pretty small, so some of the common areas may seem squeezed. Never used the outside areas as it was too cold, but they looked nice. Outside, the hotel isn't that impressive. Couple of houses put together on a canal. And I have to add, it was hard to find the first time around. The rooms stuck with the brothel motif. A lot of velvet and mirrors, with dark purple and black bedding and curtains. We got the biggest room available, and it wasn't that big. Seemed cramped in there, but hotels in Amsterdam are notoriously small, so not too bad a ding there. Service was exemplary. I really think that is an area that they were trying to be known for, and it worked. When the bellman took us to our room, he really went over many things in the hotel and city that were very helpful. Front desk staff, bar staff also very good. The one thing I would say is to use a different tourist map, the one they gave out wasn't very good. Breakfast was above average, but nothing spectacular there. I can't really give top marks on value, as it is pretty expensive for a 4 star hotel. Again, Amsterdam is very expensive for hotels, but this place was not cheap. Overall, a unique experience and a very good hotel, but for the price and location, I don't think I would stay again.

“Beautiful old Amsterdam experience”

I have stayed at the Toren twice recently, both in the main building and the second house down the street. The staff are extremely helpful, polite and motivated to give you a first class experience. The decor is dramatic, reds, black and gold, tall decorated ceilings, jacuzzis, extra large beds and walk in rain showers. Breakfast is good, the bar is delightful, relaxing and chic. We had some midnight noise issues from the rude Canal House hotel bar next door, but between the night manager and the police this was taken care of very professionally and quickly. A great romantic luxury home from home in the centre of old Amsterdam.

“wonderful”

Stayed here for just 1 night bc of my boyfriend's b-day. He works in Amsterdam so I surprised him with a romantic night at the Toren. It was so great! During check-in the woman behind the desk was just chitchatting with me and asking me if I was staying for business or pleasure. I explained to here that my boyfriend's birthday was the next day and that he works a lot. So I planned something during the evening when he is off work. Then Sebastian (also the bartender) showed me around the hotel and my room. When I was heading out for dinner and one y way to pick up my boyfriend from work, someone knocked on my door. When I open it, I saw this huge bottle of Moet & Chardon, strawberries and chocolates! I thought the guy was mistaken and he was knocking at the wrong door, but he explained it was from the hotel. They heard my boyfriend b-day was coming up so they brought champagne! I was so surprised! So nice and thoughtful! Also everything in the room was really clean, I am a neat freak and will inspect every corner of a hotelroom. This was really clean. The bed was great! And we had a wonderful view over the 'gracht' . The bathtub/jacuzzi was unbelievable! I would still like to thank everyone there for giving my boyfriend one of the best b-day's ever!
