Best City Boutique Hotel

If you want to relax for a weekend and also enjoy Amsterdam to the full, then a stay in the luxury The Toren - Hampshire Classic is highly-recommended. The hotel was proclaimed “Best City Boutique Hotel” during the 2012 Boutique Hotel Awards; a prize given for the unprecedented service that guests receive 24 hours a day: from a glass of champagne in the room to recommendations for good restaurants and places of interest in the area.

The Toren – Hampshire Classic is in an exceptionally good location. In a 17th Century canal building on Keizersgracht with Anne Frank Huis, Westerkerk, Jordaan and De 9 Straatjes around the corner. The Dam is also not far from the hotel. There are a number of interesting places of interest here: Nationaal Monument, De Nieuwe Kerk with its much-discussed exhibitions, and Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam.

On Keizersgracht with Jordaan around the corner

There is more than enough to see and do to fill an entire weekend in the immediate vicinity of The Toren - Hampshire Classic. The hotel is located on Keizersgracht, a stone’s throw from the convivial Jordaan, Wersterkerk and Westertoren, which features in many tear-jerking folksongs. Tips for great and interesting excursions in the area:

Museums
Anne Frank Huis is literally around the corner from the hotel. If you have never been in the Achterhuis, the place where Anne Frank wrote her diary during the Second World War, then this is the ultimate opportunity. Tassenmuseum Hendrikje on Herengracht is the largest bag museum in the world and has an impressive collection of more than four thousand bags, purses, cases and pouches.

Places of interest
Westerkerk with the world-famous Westertoren is very close to the hotel. You can go in all directions on the Dam for fascinating places of interest. There’s the Nationaal Monument where the Queen lays a wreath every four years on 4 May during the Nationale Dodenherdenking. Here too is De Nieuwe Kerk with its interesting exhibitions and Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam, the official reception palace of the Koninklijk Huis. You’ll find Felix Meritis on Keizersgracht. Apart from being a beautiful, historic building, you can join various lectures, debates, demonstrations and workshops here.

Shopping
De 9 Straatjes really shouldn’t be missed. In these nine small streets there are unique, beautiful shops and you can also enjoy delicious lunch and dinner here. Other great places for shopping in the area are Magna Plaza shopping centre and De Bijenkorf on the Dam.

Children
Towards Central Station on Oosterdok, you’ll find Science Center Nemo. This interactive museum is great for children who like science and who dare to conduct exciting experiments. In Madame Tussauds on the Dam, you can view celebrities from close quarters and even pose for a photograph with some of the stars.

Room service from a fantastic French Head Chef

Room service from a fantastic French Head Chef

The Toren – Hampshire Classic doesn’t have its own restaurant but does have extremely close connections with Christophe’ restaurant. The Head Chef of this renowned restaurant on Leliegracht, around the corner from the hotel, is Jean-Joël Bonsens. This Frenchman used to work in the kitchen of the French top restaurant, Les Templiers in Loiret, and worked for the world-famous Head Chef, Paul Bocuse in Lyon.
What’s special about this cooperation is that you don’t even need to leave the hotel to enjoy Jean-Joël’s cooking. You can place your order via the room service menu and have this served in your room. Should you prefer to dine in the stylish lounge, then that’s possible too. Or you can also book a table in Christophe’ Restaurant itself.

“Decadent”

Beautifully decorated, lavish hotel. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff and the best gin and tonic I've ever had by the Portuguese Barman. Spectacular views and location is close enough to walk to most of Amsterdam's attractions.

“Three days at The Toren”

Three days at the Toren at the end of a European River Cruise with my wife. The hotel is a small boutique hotel in a great part of Amsterdam. The staff are exceptional-except for the bellhop from Portugal who was uncomfortably familiar, asked too many personal questions and seemed to want to establish more of a relationship than I am used to from a hotel staff. Otherwise, the room, service, front desk, bar and breakfast were perfect. Exceptional ambience and attention to detail. We will certainly stay there again if we are in Amsterdam. We were in room 108 which is not huge but really nice. Wi-fi was free and very fast. Front desk staff are exceptional.

“Fabulous attention to detail.”

From our limo pickup arranged through The Toren through to checkout all our every requirements were met. Wifi is free and speedy through out the hotel. Cocktails are beautifully prepared. The guest are varying form business to general holiday people. The location was perfect and you are able to walk everywhere with a 15 minute stroll. There are some beautiful restaurants with in two minutes walk. I cannot praise this gorgeous best kept secret enough. Thank you and we hope to see you again !

“If Prince threw up in Amsterdam...”

Where to even begin with this hotel. I've stayed in the Netherlands a few times and so I have a familiar sense of dutch style and dutch hotels. This place is really one of kind...and I'm not sure (a month later) if I mean that as a positive thing. First, the decor is something that makes you feel like you are in a brothel, in 1970s, perhaps run by Elvis. That being said, the room we stayed in (it was purple and there was velvet) was about average size for a European hotel. Small for an American hotel. There is a really nice bar in the hotel that is good for sitting and relaxing after a long day of walking, shopping and just generally being out on the town. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly as the hotel is in a weird location not super close to any of the main tourist, or shopping areas (maybe the 9 streets). I don't think I'd stay here again, but it's not a bad deal if perhaps you are a young couple or maybe really, really into the color purple. There is a lot of that.
Owner Response of The Toren - Hampshire Classic
Dear Guests, As the owners of the The Toren we are saddened to find this review. We feel badly that this guest was perhaps not informed or aware of the unique design and atmosphere at The Toren. On a positive note we are glad to know this guest has enjoyed our bar area and the service of our staff. We clearly see that our décor was not a match for this guest and we hope to learn from this and find out how this has happened. We always do our very best to represent the hotel very honestly and clearly on our own website as well as photos that can be viewed on Trip Advisor. We have attempted to contact this guest to find out what may have gone wrong in the booking process causing any confusion or lack of clarity regarding our unique, romantic, theatrical and lush decor which has won many awards for design. The Toren is indeed a one of a kind hotel, the atmosphere is by no means standard or conservative. We hope to learn where the miscommunication occurred about the design of our hotel so that other guests may not have this feeling. We only wish for our guests to be in total comfort and to be well informed of all details of the hotel including; room types and sizes, design, décor, atmosphere and our prestigious location which is all available on our website. The happiness of our guests is the most important to us, we strive to meet or exceed all expectations. We are glad to read that this guest has found the staff to be excellent and has enjoyed the bar area. Had we known this guest didn’t like the décor of their room we would have happily offered a room with a brighter design theme. Each of our rooms is unique and has its own charm, we do our best to match our guests with a room that fits their needs and desires. Additionally, our hotel appeals to guests of all ages wishing to enjoy a unique and memorable experience. The majority of our guests range in age from 35-50. If the hotel was at fault for this guests dissatisfaction then we deeply apologize and will take all measures to make things right. With our Warmest Wishes we remain, Eric and Petra Toren Owners or The Toren Hotel
