Best City Boutique Hotel

If you want to relax for a weekend and also enjoy Amsterdam to the full, then a stay in the luxury The Toren - Hampshire Classic is highly-recommended. The hotel was proclaimed “Best City Boutique Hotel” during the 2012 Boutique Hotel Awards; a prize given for the unprecedented service that guests receive 24 hours a day: from a glass of champagne in the room to recommendations for good restaurants and places of interest in the area.

The Toren – Hampshire Classic is in an exceptionally good location. In a 17th Century canal building on Keizersgracht with Anne Frank Huis, Westerkerk, Jordaan and De 9 Straatjes around the corner. The Dam is also not far from the hotel. There are a number of interesting places of interest here: Nationaal Monument, De Nieuwe Kerk with its much-discussed exhibitions, and Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam.

On Keizersgracht with Jordaan around the corner

There is more than enough to see and do to fill an entire weekend in the immediate vicinity of The Toren - Hampshire Classic. The hotel is located on Keizersgracht, a stone’s throw from the convivial Jordaan, Wersterkerk and Westertoren, which features in many tear-jerking folksongs. Tips for great and interesting excursions in the area:

Museums
Anne Frank Huis is literally around the corner from the hotel. If you have never been in the Achterhuis, the place where Anne Frank wrote her diary during the Second World War, then this is the ultimate opportunity. Tassenmuseum Hendrikje on Herengracht is the largest bag museum in the world and has an impressive collection of more than four thousand bags, purses, cases and pouches.

Places of interest
Westerkerk with the world-famous Westertoren is very close to the hotel. You can go in all directions on the Dam for fascinating places of interest. There’s the Nationaal Monument where the Queen lays a wreath every four years on 4 May during the Nationale Dodenherdenking. Here too is De Nieuwe Kerk with its interesting exhibitions and Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam, the official reception palace of the Koninklijk Huis. You’ll find Felix Meritis on Keizersgracht. Apart from being a beautiful, historic building, you can join various lectures, debates, demonstrations and workshops here.

Shopping
De 9 Straatjes really shouldn’t be missed. In these nine small streets there are unique, beautiful shops and you can also enjoy delicious lunch and dinner here. Other great places for shopping in the area are Magna Plaza shopping centre and De Bijenkorf on the Dam.

Children
Towards Central Station on Oosterdok, you’ll find Science Center Nemo. This interactive museum is great for children who like science and who dare to conduct exciting experiments. In Madame Tussauds on the Dam, you can view celebrities from close quarters and even pose for a photograph with some of the stars.

Room service from a fantastic French Head Chef

Room service from a fantastic French Head Chef

The Toren – Hampshire Classic doesn’t have its own restaurant but does have extremely close connections with Christophe’ restaurant. The Head Chef of this renowned restaurant on Leliegracht, around the corner from the hotel, is Jean-Joël Bonsens. This Frenchman used to work in the kitchen of the French top restaurant, Les Templiers in Loiret, and worked for the world-famous Head Chef, Paul Bocuse in Lyon.
What’s special about this cooperation is that you don’t even need to leave the hotel to enjoy Jean-Joël’s cooking. You can place your order via the room service menu and have this served in your room. Should you prefer to dine in the stylish lounge, then that’s possible too. Or you can also book a table in Christophe’ Restaurant itself.

“Outstanding!!!!!!!!!”

I loved everything about this hotel and based on my experience there, it's now my favourite hotel in which I've ever stayed! From the second I arrived to when I left, every single staff person there was beyond helpful and went out of their way to see how my stay was going and whether there was anything I needed. I stayed in a "small single room" which indeed was small, yet I loved it. The room was efficiently laid out which made its small size manageable. It had everything one would need including a small fridge and it was perfect for my 4 day stay. The bed was a bit firm for my liking so I asked if they could do anything about it and immediately they added foam padding which made it extremely comfortable! Before I arrived, I was a bit concerned about the layout of the bathroom because the photo almost made it look like the shower wasn't separate from the rest of the bathroom (which I've seen before); I was relieved to find there was an actual shower stall distinct from the rest of the bathroom. There was more than adequate storage space in the room and bathroom and overall, it was lovely. The breakfast was amazing. So nice to sit in an elegantly furnished room while eating smoked salmon! An amazing selection of other items was also available that was miles above what's typically served for breakfast in other hotels. The hotel itself is located in an amazing area, not far from Dam Square, minutes to the Anne Frank House, yet not immediately within the main tourist zones. It's within walking distance to practically everything and if you don't want to walk, trams are very close by that take you everywhere. It's one canal away from the Jordaan area which is very lovely. The staff at this hotel are the best I've even seen. Clearly, every single staff person there loves working with people and, in fact, they should be teaching others what customer service is all about! They were all so pleasant and helpful and it really was quite astounding to experience this type of service! I can definitely see why The Toren is rated the # 1 hotel on Trip Advisor. Here's just one example of many where they went out of their way.....I wanted to add on a night at a hotel in another city I was visiting in the next week (a large luxury chain) and was having trouble connecting with the person - who seemed to only answer emails one hour per day if that. This had been going on for a few days and I was getting stressed about whether I'd actually have a place to stay. The person at the front desk at The Toren (I wish I knew her name!) actually offered to phone the hotel for me and when she was also getting the run-around and not able to get through to anyone who could make the reservation (really??), she actually kept phoning until she was able to get through to someone who could help. I couldn't believe she had done this for me!! No other hotel would've provided this level of customer service. Because of her, I was able to get the matter resolved and not have to think about it any more. She was just one of the many at the hotel who were welcoming and really made sure that guests were taken care of. The Toren really deserves more than a 5 as far as I'm concerned! I hope to return to this beautiful hotel one day and will definitely recommend it to everyone I know!

“An Absolute Gem of a Hotel”

We spent three nights at the Toren in mid-June and enjoyed every minute of our stay. The hotel is very opulent and beautifully decorated, the bar in particular is gorgeous and a great place to sit and enjoy a cocktail. Our room wasn't big but it was comfortable and very well equipped with a jacuzzi, separate shower, coffee machine and air conditioning. The hotel is in a great location for walking around, with some lovely little shops and cafes nearby. The standard of service from all the staff we encountered was first class and it's obvious that they all take a pride in working at the Toren and want to make your stay with them one to remember.

“Great location, very small rooms”

The good: Location is great in the centre of Amsterdam, close to all the popular tourist attractions. Close to the main tram lines and about 1.8km from the central station. Staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are well equipped. Breakfast was good (not included in the room rate). It's buffet style continental breakfast. The bad: The rooms are tiny! The bath is in the room with a curtain separating the bathroom area. The toilet is very small. The Dutch are the tallest people in the world but they build the smallest toilets! Why? The decor is very dark and arty. Some will like it but others will hate it. The photos on Tripadvisor and their website is misleading. It is much, much smaller than on the photos and much darker. There is no space to put your luggage. Beware when you book and check the room sizes.

“Probably the most charming hotel in Amsterdam”

This is a wonderful boutique hotel located on a canal with terrific service and beautifully decorated rooms. Check the photos. The bed was so great that we asked about the details so we could investigate buying one. The hotel combines luxury with charm. There is an inviting outdoor garden, and a delicious buffet breakfast. It is close to the trams so it is easy to get around the city and not far from the central train station. Highly recommended.

“Absolutely wonderful! ”

If I had to sum up this hotel in one word? Wow! This hotel is just fantastic and was the icing on the cake for our trip to Amsterdam. The staff were absolutely wonderful, they were very informative and helpful, and I was blown away by their English skills. The room was perfect, and matched the pictures on the website to a tee. Buffet breakfast was quite nice and the coffee was on point too. I'd love to stay here again.
