Best City Boutique Hotel

If you want to relax for a weekend and also enjoy Amsterdam to the full, then a stay in the luxury The Toren - Hampshire Classic is highly-recommended. The hotel was proclaimed “Best City Boutique Hotel” during the 2012 Boutique Hotel Awards; a prize given for the unprecedented service that guests receive 24 hours a day: from a glass of champagne in the room to recommendations for good restaurants and places of interest in the area.

The Toren – Hampshire Classic is in an exceptionally good location. In a 17th Century canal building on Keizersgracht with Anne Frank Huis, Westerkerk, Jordaan and De 9 Straatjes around the corner. The Dam is also not far from the hotel. There are a number of interesting places of interest here: Nationaal Monument, De Nieuwe Kerk with its much-discussed exhibitions, and Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam.

On Keizersgracht with Jordaan around the corner

There is more than enough to see and do to fill an entire weekend in the immediate vicinity of The Toren - Hampshire Classic. The hotel is located on Keizersgracht, a stone’s throw from the convivial Jordaan, Wersterkerk and Westertoren, which features in many tear-jerking folksongs. Tips for great and interesting excursions in the area:

Museums
Anne Frank Huis is literally around the corner from the hotel. If you have never been in the Achterhuis, the place where Anne Frank wrote her diary during the Second World War, then this is the ultimate opportunity. Tassenmuseum Hendrikje on Herengracht is the largest bag museum in the world and has an impressive collection of more than four thousand bags, purses, cases and pouches.

Places of interest
Westerkerk with the world-famous Westertoren is very close to the hotel. You can go in all directions on the Dam for fascinating places of interest. There’s the Nationaal Monument where the Queen lays a wreath every four years on 4 May during the Nationale Dodenherdenking. Here too is De Nieuwe Kerk with its interesting exhibitions and Koninklijk Paleis Amsterdam, the official reception palace of the Koninklijk Huis. You’ll find Felix Meritis on Keizersgracht. Apart from being a beautiful, historic building, you can join various lectures, debates, demonstrations and workshops here.

Shopping
De 9 Straatjes really shouldn’t be missed. In these nine small streets there are unique, beautiful shops and you can also enjoy delicious lunch and dinner here. Other great places for shopping in the area are Magna Plaza shopping centre and De Bijenkorf on the Dam.

Children
Towards Central Station on Oosterdok, you’ll find Science Center Nemo. This interactive museum is great for children who like science and who dare to conduct exciting experiments. In Madame Tussauds on the Dam, you can view celebrities from close quarters and even pose for a photograph with some of the stars.

Room service from a fantastic French Head Chef

Room service from a fantastic French Head Chef

The Toren – Hampshire Classic doesn’t have its own restaurant but does have extremely close connections with Christophe’ restaurant. The Head Chef of this renowned restaurant on Leliegracht, around the corner from the hotel, is Jean-Joël Bonsens. This Frenchman used to work in the kitchen of the French top restaurant, Les Templiers in Loiret, and worked for the world-famous Head Chef, Paul Bocuse in Lyon.
What’s special about this cooperation is that you don’t even need to leave the hotel to enjoy Jean-Joël’s cooking. You can place your order via the room service menu and have this served in your room. Should you prefer to dine in the stylish lounge, then that’s possible too. Or you can also book a table in Christophe’ Restaurant itself.

“Let me keep this a secret from the rest of the world”

Stayed from August 19 to 22 in the small single room. The room is about 120 sq. ft. on a stairwell and the owners made it very clear on booking it is very small with no view. However, the location is excellent and price is right so I went ahead. And I was not a bit disappointed. The hotel was located near tram station Westermarkt adjacent to the Anne Frank House overlooking one of the beautiful canals of Amsterdam. Check-in was smooth and the reception made me felt like home right away. The room was adequate for a single traveler with all the amenities you can imagine in a 5-star hotel. Noise was a slight issue especially when people are walking up or down the stairs but that was very well muffled with a second door in the room and thick carpeting. Breakfast (in the bar) was delicious with a wide spread served by some of the most proactive servers I've seen. The staff are truly the gem of this hotel apart from the opulent interior. Nothing was too much of a hassle. The management did a good follow up review after my stay for which I gave some minor feedbacks which were responded very well. This is an amazing hotel which one would just like to keep it a secret and enjoy it personally. However, the staff warrants huge compliments and so this is the review for their gracious hospitality.

“Perfect Hotel”

We stayed for 2 nights. A very convenient location. The staff, without exception could not have been friendlier or more helpful. Our room decor was stylish - complete with Jacuzzi bath in the middle! Attractive Breakfast room/ Bar and even a little garden area in the back. Would definitely stay here again.

“Perfect!!!!”

We are traveling on a month long honeymoon through Europe and staying at The Toren a few week ago. OMG!! What an amazing experience. The location is perfect! The staff is amazing!!! The hotel and rooms are beautiful!! The bathtub in our room was the coolest bathtub I've ever seen!! We checked in and Julius was so helpful in suggesting some restaurants, bike rentals, etc. He was absolutely the most helpful person during our entire travels through Europe. He actually cares about food and your experience and so instead of just handing you a list of recommendations (which he has available and was helpful), he talks with you about what you're in to and makes appropriate suggestions. Every dinner we had in Amsterdam was at the suggestion of Julius another staff member at Toren...and every dinner is amazing!! They sent up some chocolates and champagne for our honeymoon. (This was becoming a trend as our first two hotels did this as well). However, the chocolates they sent up were unbelievable. The view looked out to one of Amsterdams amazing canals. The street was quiet at night but we still felt like the city was alive. It's close to restaurants and shopping and such, but you never, ever feel even remotely close to tourist hell. (Our new understanding of "tourist hell" can be quickly spotted by a street vendor selling "selfie sticks".) I can't say enough good things about The Toren. We absolutely loved it and can't wait to go back for a longer stay in Amsterdam. (Oh, just need to slip in that the bed was so comfy!!!) Thank you to all the Staff at The Toren for giving us an amazing few days in your amazing city!!!

“Picturesque Hotel”

The hotel interior is designed aesthetically. Although the floor is light, seems to be wood so it's squeaky when you walk. The room I stayed is a single room. Bed is quite big for the size of the room but still okay. But I do like the toilet, it is very modern, clean and neat. I also like the espresso machine in the room. The staff are very friendly and very helpful. They will guide you if you need help with regards to dining and tour.

“Beautiful hotel with AMAZING staff!”

What a fantastic find. Amsterdam was the first stop on our 6 week European honeymoon. When I was searching for accommodation I was looking for good location and somewhere that was unique. The Toren ticketed both of these boxes. We arrived mid morning so needed to store our bags for a few hours before check in. The girls on the front desk where fantastic and very accommodating. They offered us breakfast and allowed us to get changed after being on such a long flight. After a bit of shopping we headed back to the hotel to check in. One of the staff members showed us to our room and pointed out how everything worked. Our bags had been delivered to our rooms and there was a lovely bottle of bubbles waiting for us! While showing us the room the staff noticed the TV was not working. We were not to fussed but said he would send someone up right away to fix it - which he did. The room was beautiful. Fantastic location. The staff amazing and extremely helpful. What more could you want???
