Purmerend has long been a trading town. For a full 500 years the heart of the town has been the setting for the cattle market. This is still held every Tuesday morning at the crack of dawn. In the background various monuments - such as the former town-hall that now houses Purmerend Museum - serve as props for the old tableau.

In recent years Purmerend has expanded to become the biggest town in Waterland and as result has a choice of facilities for going out, recreation and shopping. This last can be done, among other places in the modern shopping centres of which the town has several.
