The most sustainable four-star hotel in the Netherlands

If you’re looking for a sustainable hotel in the middle of the countryside, look no further. Hampshire Boshotel – Overberg is the most sustainable four-star hotel in the Netherlands. It’s in a fantastic location on the edge of the forests of the Nationaal Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug and there are many walking and cycling routes in the area. After an active day in the countryside you can enjoy a delicious dinner in the stylish hotel restaurant, with its open kitchen and fantastic view of the forests.

Hampshire Boshotel – Overberg is on the border between the Provinces of Gelderland and Utrecht, in a peaceful, wooded environment. It’s an attractive destination for all kinds of events, from a romantic weekend away for two to a business brainstorming session in the forest. For even more peace and relaxation, the hotel has various wellness facilities, such as a sauna, Turkish steam room, solarium and beauty centre. And if you’d like to take you dog with you, then that’s OK too!

Meet a roe deer or badger in the forest!

From Hampshire Boshotel – Overberg you can just walk into the Nationaal Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug. This hilly area runs from the Grebbeberg near Rhenen to the Gooimeer near Huizen and contains woods, heathland, sand drifts and grassland. It’s very likely that you’ll come across roe deer, foxes, badgers, rare pine martins and unique birds during your walk. Prefer the city? You can be in Arnhem or Utrecht within a half hour drive. A few tips about the surroundings:

Kasteel Amerongen was built 700 years ago, commissioned by the brothers Henric and Diederic Borre. Today, the castle is a museum with its own collection of art and antiques. In the Militaire Luchtvaart Museum in Soesterberg there are interesting exhibitions about flying and aircraft throughout the year. Prefer trains? Then the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht is highly recommended. For a broader subject, namely the history of the Netherlands, you can visit the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem. The “inhabitants” of the museum tell you special stories about daily life in days gone by.

All big theatre performances that tour the country appear on the stage at Theater De Lampegiet in Veenendaal. Check the programme and book your seat in time.

In the Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen more is possible than just looking at special animals. Children can also take part in treasure hunts and experience adventures with real adventurers. To cool off when the mercury reaches high summer temperatures, try the Henschotermeer natural swimming pool. At Pyramide van Austerlitz the children can play in the playground, bump into each other in bumper cars and take a turn on the carousel.

The Golfclub Anderstein golf course in Maarsbergen offers more than enough challenges. There are no fewer than 27 holes to play on this beautiful course, situated partly in the Gelderse Vallei and partly on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

Enjoy delicious, organic dishes

Restaurant Boshotel Overberg
The serenity of the immediate surroundings of Hampshire Boshotel – Overberg is also found in the restaurant. From here you have a view of the forest. The open kitchen and crackling open fire also give the restaurant a special ambiance. The kitchen has a French-Dutch orientation and uses only organic produce, including those from the “green” butcher, Ton Molenaar in Amersfoort. You can visit the restaurant the whole day for breakfast, lunch or dinner or for a a quick snack.

Brasserie De Holle Boom
Brasserie De Holle Boom is right next to the hotel. It’s highly recommended that you take a bite to eat here; the décor is truly unique. The brasserie is situated in a farm dating from 1886. And there’s a lot on offer: from an intimate à-la-carte dinner for two to a buffet or barbecue for a large group.

“Would prefer a more conventional bathroom”

The hotel location was exactly what we had expected: very easy to get to/from Veenendaal-West train station (by bike, in our case). I agree with some reviewers that the overall impression upon arrival is more like a Dutch care facility or a school but the receptionist was perfectly friendly. We stayed in room 107. Finally I understood what numerous previous reviewers were talking about re: the infamous sliding glass door shared by the shower and toilet. Personally, I would prefer a more conventional bathroom. Even when the door is closed, it doesn't close all the way. At least not when the toilet is occupied. Fine if only one person is in the room, and maybe for some couples it won't be a dealbreaker, but we didn't like it. We were only one floor up from the lobby, which has clean, spacious bathrooms that offer more privacy with three stalls with ceiling to floor doors, but it would be nicer to have that kind of privacy in the room itself. Other than that the room was fine for two nights. The bathtub is right there when you walk in, which was kind of funny, but I liked how the wardrobe was built into the one side, and there was plenty of room along the top to put your toiletries, keys, etc. The sink is right there in the room, too. No complaints about the beds, cozy little sitting area at the foot of the bed, excellent lighting options, functional and attractive curtains. No problems with mosquitos, flies or other unwanted guests with the windows open. The road is quite busy, however, so it wasn't quite the escape from usual city noise that we had anticipated with the windows open, but it wasn't terrible. There was plenty of birdsong to balance out the road noise. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the hallway is very hot and stuffy, but fortunately the room wasn't. Delicious organic breakfast with plenty on offer, including scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, yoghurt, berry compote, a choice of bread, cheeses, meats, fruit salad. Yes, the coffee is from a machine, but it was quite decent. Nice selection of teas and three different juices, too. The breakfast room was light, airy, spacious, view of the back lawn, friendly employees. Overall, some quirks but fun to try and a perfectly fine home base for two nights.

Friends getaway
“Clean quiet rural hotel”

We stayed here for 3 nights with a party of friends. The hotel is beautiful, as is the location on the edge of woodland, with cycle hire, walking paths etc. Rooms spotless and comfortable. Restaurant excellent and not high priced. Lots of space to sit outside in the sun and relax.

“A quaint hotel in a green quiet location”

We were travelling on business and had to stay here as the closer hotel to work was fully booked. This was an odd hotel, ok but not very special as others have pointed out. it is clean with a good breakfast. The adjacent restaurant closes at 9pm so not a lot going out there. The oddest thing about the hotel is the shared sliding door between loo and the shower room. if you are a couple and both want to use the facilities, it's going to be interesting! However the staff are helpful and if you want a quite place in a nice green area this might be what you are looking for.

“A very comfortable hotel in a beautifull area.”

The hotel is very basic but also very comfortable. A nice big, extra long, bed, a good bathroom and a very nice view on the Woods of the Utrecht Heuvelrug. The breakfast is simple but very tastefull and with fresh products. This is a hotel where we will return for sure.
