A weekend break in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Hampshire Hotel – City Terneuzen is the ideal address for a weekend break in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Thanks to its central location, there are plenty of options. You can walk or cycle in the nature areas. Cross over the Belgian border to absorb the culture in Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges. And back to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen to explore the fortified towns of Hulst and Sluis.

The centre of Terneuzen is easy to reach by car or bus from the Hampshire Hotel – City Terneuzen. There are some lovely walks through Oud-Terneuzen, whose rich history is reflected in the old houses and streets, the arsenal building and the sixteenth century fortifications. At the Portaal van Vlaanderen, you can view the famous lock complex of the harbour city from nearby. And on Scheldeboulevard, you have a wonderful view over the Western Scheldt.

Peace, the beach and culinary hotspots

Zeeuws-Vlaanderen stands for peace, sea and beach. It is an area with lots of history, which is reflected in fortified towns like Hulst and Sluis. The many culinary hotspots add to the atmosphere. The municipality of Sluis alone has numerous exquisite restaurants. For example, Oud Sluis (3 star), La Trinité Sluis (1 star) and De Kromme Watergang (1 star). As you can see: this is the place for gourmets. But the surroundings of Terneuzen also have lots to offer nature lovers. In various nature areas, you can take long walks or cycle tours. Other tips:

There are some lovely walks trough the town of Terneuzen. Past the Arsenaal (military building dating from 1833), the Willibrordustoren, the (old) Town Hall on Noordstraat, the Moffenschans (sixteenth century farmhouse) and the Monument De Vliegende Hollander.

At the Portaal van Vlaanderen, you can view the sea lock complex of Terneuzen. In the months of July and August, there are daily tours here. In Vlissingen, there is the lovely muZEEum, where you can experience the significance of the sea in the stormy history of Zeeland. Historisch Museum de Bevelanden is the treasury of the cultural heritage of North and South Beveland.

On a rainy day, the children (and adults) can enjoy the indoor play paradise de Toversluis. Also fun: the subtropical swimming paradise Scheldorado. For a meeting with kids' heroes K3, Bumba and Mega Mindy, you can visit one of the Plopsaland theme parks in Belgium.

Every June, Terneuzen celebrates the Havendagen, focusing on the harbour and the water. Markets, live performances and a fair are always part of this festivity. The big jazz festival Schelde Jazz is also held in June.

Half an hour's drive from the hotel are the most famous sandy beaches of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen: Groede, Nieuwvliet and Cadzand.

“Standard three stars - nothing more, nothing less”

To be fair, there's nothing wrong with this hotel nor its staff. If you are looking for a decent room, a good bed and a nice shower, then you are at the right address (not cheap however, but hey, you are in The Netherlands). But, if you want some personality, an extra touch of hospitality, a hint of an additional effort to make your stay unique or unforgettable, then don't come here. How can I put it? It's probably best to be compared with a basic rent a car: It does the job with all the required basics, but it doesn't do or give anything more than just that.

“Good value for money”

This is an excellent "on the go" hotel. We did not really explore the surroundings, but I don't think there is much to do from a touristic point of view. But we stayed here for 1 night when we visited Belgium. The room is good value for money. It's clean, spacious and has a nice restaurant with a good breakfast included. We were not able to have dinner at the restaurant as it was full. Check-in and check-out was fast and staff is friendly. The shower is spacious and clean. In front of the hotel there is a big parking lot. Neighbourhood seems OK and safe. All in all a positive experience.

“Large rooms”

This Hotel has very large rooms with living room/kitchen and bedroom area. Clean and comfy beds. Breakfast and bar was also ok with eg pool table. However, is it clearly a business hotel as the place is not very charming or offer any nice suroundings.

“stay in Terneuzen”

Good hotel, good facilities, kind personnel. Got a free upgrade to a suite! That was nice. Got there by public transport. The hotel is not visible from the bus stop, that could be better. Breakfast was simple but sufficient. Room rates are good, not too high.

“Decent Hotel with some Odd Peculiarities”

I recently stayed here on business. The employees were very nice and I really wanted to love this place. But I could not... 1) The location is City Terneuzen. This is key because you are essentially surrounded by apartments and homes. You are not on the water or close to anything touristy. This is a strictly functional hotel. 2) The restaurant food was good and I ate there several times. The big downside is that they do not have room service. This means you are forced to eat in the restaurant and can't go back to your room and relax after work. This lacking amenity alone would prevent me from staying here again. 3) They do not leave you any shampoo, conditioner or bar soap - so you have no way to wash your hands after you go to the toilet. 4) There is no AC. I found it hot in the room during September, I can’t imagine how hot they get in the summer. 5) The room was REALLY DARK. Except for a small reading light on the bed wall, the only lighting is sconces on the walls. This means all the light is indirect. After the sun went down, the room was so dark I could not work on my computer. 6) You need earplugs. The walls are thin and you can easily hear the rooms around you. Also, you have to open the doors to cool off the room, so you get all the noise from the carpark. 7) The beds are really soft 8) No Shelf in the shower to put your shampoo, soap, etc. 9) The bath vanity had no room to put anything Overall the stay was fine, but just too many drawbacks to return unless it was the only place available again.
