Hotel in the historic heart of Antwerp

All 37 rooms at Hotel O – Kathedral have been designed by one of the best-known architects in Antwerp: Jo Peeters. The result is a unique, contemporary look with special colours and details. The hotel is in an ideal location for a weekend in Antwerp: on Handschoenmarkt in the heart of the historic centre. It is also directly opposite the majestic Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, where old art treasures can be seen.

There are various places of interest, great shopping streets, cosy cafés and hip restaurants all within walking distance of Hampshire Hotel O – Kathedral. The well-known Grote Markt is practically around the corner. After a day of walking, shopping and visiting museums, it’s great to come home to your modern hotel room, provided as standard with free Wi-Fi, flat screen TV and a queen-sized bed with down duvets and luxurious bedding. And then there’s the trendy BAR O, where you can enjoy drinks at the end of the day.

Discover the history of Antwerp

Many interesting places of interest and bustling areas in the historic city centre of Antwerp, are around the corner or opposite Hampshire Hotel O - Kathedral. These include Grote Markt, the 16th Century Antwerp town hall and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal. And there are also many beautiful museums, and great things to do with the children. A few tips:

Museums
ModeMuseum, or MoMu, is located (how fitting) in the heart of Antwerp’s shopping district. This dynamic museum has a collection of more than 25,000 items of clothing, shoes and accessories. Changing and themed exhibitions are composed here regularly. What story does a photograph tell with its images? You’ll learn about this in FotoMuseum Provincie Antwerpen, or FoMu. MAS | Museum aan de Stroom is located in an impressive building in the old port of Antwerp. With permanent and changing exhibitions, this museum tells the story of the city, the river, the port and the world. Famous baroque painter Rubens purchased a building in 1610 which he converted entirely into a home. This building is now a museum, Rubenshuis, that tells the story of his life and work.

Children
One of Europe’s oldest zoos is located in the heart of the city: Antwerpen Zoo. A beautiful, historic place where around five thousand animals live and where there’s lots to see and experience. If the weather turns, you can let the children blow off steam in the indoor playground Pirateneiland. This indoor playground has a pirate ship, climbing and clambering places, slides and games. Aquatopia is also indoors, and is a top attraction with seven wonder water worlds: rain forest, swamp, mangrove, coral reefs, ocean, lab and diving boat. Ecohuis is to the east of Antwerp. In this interactive house you can learn with the whole family how to live in the most environmentally-friendly way possible. You can really take advantage of this.

Special places
Het Steen is a beautiful castle built around 1200. The monument is on the Schelde and is the oldest building in Antwerp. Begijnhof is certainly worth a visit, an oasis of peace in the city with historic small houses, the Sint-Catharinakerkje and a beautiful enclosed garden. The streets around Antwerp central station together form the diamond district, the heart of Antwerp’s diamond industry. You can find precious stones, gold and silver here.

“Central location!”

Quaint hotel centrally located! Right across the church in a central square. The rooms are very small but stylish. Ours had a bathtub and glass walls which could be very sexy but if you're travelling with someone you didn't want to see you naked, could be very awkward! Our window opened out and we could hear the church bells ringing. Downside, the hall way smelled bad and the walls were very thin!

“Perfect hotel for travels that want to be in the midle of the city center!”

As we were staying for one night only in Antwerp, we wanted to be in the midle of everything. Hotel O offers just that; great location (close to sights, restaurants and good shopping) at an afforable price. Still small, with its unique personality. Not too homogenous. We chose the standard room - and that is what it was. Two small rooms - the open bathroom and then a small bedroom. Quiet as it was not weekend (no parties), and our windows were towards a backyard shaft. Clean and safe. The hotel offers a simple, yet good and affordable breakfast (14€). And parking is available close by (public parking house/ garage). Standard room = no view. Upgrade to get view of the square. But "be aware" that if you get a room towards the square it might be a bit noisy (hotel offers free earplugs :) ).

“Fantastic location, lovely people”

The room was very basic, as expected, however the location was fantastic. No coffee or tea making facilities which was disappointing. The staff all friendly and welcoming Beautiful city, lots of restaurants and eateries just on your doorstep. We used the hop on hop off tour service, but stayed on due to poor weather. The castle was very small but worth spending the 15 mins it takes to explore. The cathedral was stunning as well as St Pauls. Beautiful architecture.

“Romantic weekend ”

Lovely and friendly staff and a rather small but nicely decorated room overlooking the square. Having the bath in the middle of the room was a lot of fun, and great views out of the window. It can get a bit noisy though at night or early in the morning but that's the only down point

“Nice but really tiny rooms!!!”

Very friendly team, great location but our room #54 really tiny for 2 people and shows signs of old deco in black to hide many little defects! It is comfort to its minimum... But the location makes it very attractive as you are on the Cathedral's square!
