Remarkable hotel on Hoornse Meer

For everyone who enjoys a weekend of walking and cycling, Hampshire Hotel – Plaza Groningen is ideal. This hotel with its remarkable exterior is situated in beautiful surroundings on Hoornse Meer. You can hire bicycles at the hotel or use your own bicycle to cycle into the stunning countryside. After an energetic walk or cycle trip, you can take a dive in the hotel’s swimming pool. You can then settle down feeling fresh for a special culinary dinner in restaurant Culinas.

The inner city of Groningen with all its entertainment and culture is within easy reach of Hampshire Hotel - Plaza Groningen. The centre is just a few kilometres’ drive from the hotel. Just wandering through the cultural capital city of the North, you come across countless places of interest. High points are the Martinitoren, the Martinikerk, the Groninger Museum, the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum and the Prinsentuin. You certainly shouldn’t miss the attractive shopping streets, café terraces, cafés and restaurants in this lively student city.

Situated in a nature reserve and close to the city

All you have to do is step outside the hotel and you are in the middle of the beautiful nature reserve around Hoornse Meer. Paterwoldsemeer is also close-by, which means there’s more than enough choice for an energetic walk or cycle trip. The centre of Groningen is easy to reach by public transport and car. In short, more than enough to see, do and experience.

If you take the train to the city, you can’t miss the imposing Groninger Museum building. Come and see it from the inside too! There are continuously interesting exhibitions, and the fixed collection is impressive. Cheerful museums are the Nederlands Stripmuseum Groningen with all its comic strip heroes and Muzeeaquarium in Delftzijl with aquariums full of fish, crustaceans and molluscs.
History Historical heritage can be found everywhere. Highlights in the city centre include the Martinitoren, the Hoofdstation, the Goudkantoor and the Prinsenhof. Some 16 of the province’s original 180 stately homes remain. The most well-known four, Fraeylemaborg, Menkemaborg, Landgoed Nienoord and Verhildersum, are open to the public.

In the covered Apekooi (monkey cage) playground children can, you’ve guessed it already, climb and clamber like small monkeys. They are allowed on bare feet in ’t Blôde Fuottenpaad in Opende.

Each August you can enjoy the Indian Summer during the Festival Noorderzon. For ten days there are numerous shows and (theatre) performances both in the fairy-tale Noorderplantsoen and in the city centre. On the last Saturday in August, the ZomerJazzFietsTour starts. A unique combination of a cycle trip through the Reltdiepdal and jazz concerts in Mediaeval churches and farm sheds.

Enjoy culinary delights and a convivial drink

Restaurant Meerwold
One glance at the menu says it all: this is cooking at the highest level. A terrine of smoked salmon with La Ratte potatoes and saffron mayonnaise, beef carpaccio with truffle tapanade, Reypenaer VSOP fries and fennel crudités; the choice is yours. The Head Chef works with local quality produce as much as possible, such as the Zuidlaardermeer eel. He is continually developing new dishes, which means the menu also changes regularly. Restaurant Culinas is open seven days a week from 7.00 am to 9.00 pm.

Enjoyed a delicious dinner in Restaurant Meerwold but still fancy a last drink? Or maybe its time for early evening drinks? For a delicious drink you can visit the stylish hotelbar. When the weather's fine, you can enjoy sitting outside on the terrace.

“Is an OK”

The place around the hotel is very quite and nice. Me and my wife stayed here for a couple of nights, the price was 120Euro per night. Great wifi. But we were surprised that our room didn't have refrigerator [mini bar] nor kettle to make tea-coffee. The socket were only two-plugins and when we ask for adapter, with three plugins, the Hotel desk manager had to look into what it seems is a collection of cables-charges in a box, which to my disappointment failed to get what we needed.

“nice hotel, bit outdated, at the outskirt of the city”

Having to stay weekdays for my work this Hotel is good value for money, The matras of my bed was a little too soft for my taste. The breakfast was very rich, the parking free. Wifi was not too strong for Skype, which was a pity, also for the kids at home

“Lovely Hotel”

Good value for money. The rooms are quite small but absolutely fine for a place to sleep for one night. The bathroom was clean with a good shower. The bed was perfectly comfortable. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and the meal we were served was exceptional and good value for money. Breakfast was also good with a good range of both continental and cooked breakfast with breads and croissants. We were also pleased that our dog was welcome to stay with us.

“Nice hotel, but a bit outdated”

This is a large business hotel at the outskirts of Groningen. On the up side, the breakfast is very rich, the parking lot is free and can accommodate plenty of cars. On the down side, the room was very small and A/C was all but useless. A few wear and tear sings were clearly visible on the walls and carpets. The mattresses were very soft which, for me, means an aching back the next morning. There was hardly any room for luggage. The hotel operates a shuttle service to the city center and back, free of charge. However, the car is quite small and reservation are required in advance. English seemed to be a bit of an obstacle with some of the receptionists, which made the check out process quite slow.

“2 nights business”

A great looking hotel, and not too far from the train station in town (i even believe they run a curtesy bus from the train station every 20 minutes or so?). Reception where great, even though work in formed me they had booked a room, guess what they didn't.....but it was sorted with a fuss. The room was fantastic, bed as I like it soft mattress. The only down side if there was one (and it wasn't that much of an issue) was the quality of evening meal for the price you pay, it was a little dry and a little bland, but still edible.
