Remarkable hotel on Hoornse Meer

For everyone who enjoys a weekend of walking and cycling, Hampshire Hotel – Plaza Groningen is ideal. This hotel with its remarkable exterior is situated in beautiful surroundings on Hoornse Meer. You can hire bicycles at the hotel or use your own bicycle to cycle into the stunning countryside. After an energetic walk or cycle trip, you can take a dive in the hotel’s swimming pool. You can then settle down feeling fresh for a special culinary dinner in restaurant Culinas.

The inner city of Groningen with all its entertainment and culture is within easy reach of Hampshire Hotel - Plaza Groningen. The centre is just a few kilometres’ drive from the hotel. Just wandering through the cultural capital city of the North, you come across countless places of interest. High points are the Martinitoren, the Martinikerk, the Groninger Museum, the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum and the Prinsentuin. You certainly shouldn’t miss the attractive shopping streets, café terraces, cafés and restaurants in this lively student city.

Situated in a nature reserve and close to the city

All you have to do is step outside the hotel and you are in the middle of the beautiful nature reserve around Hoornse Meer. Paterwoldsemeer is also close-by, which means there’s more than enough choice for an energetic walk or cycle trip. The centre of Groningen is easy to reach by public transport and car. In short, more than enough to see, do and experience.

If you take the train to the city, you can’t miss the imposing Groninger Museum building. Come and see it from the inside too! There are continuously interesting exhibitions, and the fixed collection is impressive. Cheerful museums are the Nederlands Stripmuseum Groningen with all its comic strip heroes and Muzeeaquarium in Delftzijl with aquariums full of fish, crustaceans and molluscs.
History Historical heritage can be found everywhere. Highlights in the city centre include the Martinitoren, the Hoofdstation, the Goudkantoor and the Prinsenhof. Some 16 of the province’s original 180 stately homes remain. The most well-known four, Fraeylemaborg, Menkemaborg, Landgoed Nienoord and Verhildersum, are open to the public.

In the covered Apekooi (monkey cage) playground children can, you’ve guessed it already, climb and clamber like small monkeys. They are allowed on bare feet in ’t Blôde Fuottenpaad in Opende.

Each August you can enjoy the Indian Summer during the Festival Noorderzon. For ten days there are numerous shows and (theatre) performances both in the fairy-tale Noorderplantsoen and in the city centre. On the last Saturday in August, the ZomerJazzFietsTour starts. A unique combination of a cycle trip through the Reltdiepdal and jazz concerts in Mediaeval churches and farm sheds.

Enjoy culinary delights and a convivial drink

Restaurant Meerwold
One glance at the menu says it all: this is cooking at the highest level. A terrine of smoked salmon with La Ratte potatoes and saffron mayonnaise, beef carpaccio with truffle tapanade, Reypenaer VSOP fries and fennel crudités; the choice is yours. The Head Chef works with local quality produce as much as possible, such as the Zuidlaardermeer eel. He is continually developing new dishes, which means the menu also changes regularly. Restaurant Culinas is open seven days a week from 7.00 am to 9.00 pm.

Enjoyed a delicious dinner in Restaurant Meerwold but still fancy a last drink? Or maybe its time for early evening drinks? For a delicious drink you can visit the stylish hotelbar. When the weather's fine, you can enjoy sitting outside on the terrace.

“Nice place if for a midmarket price at most”

Built early nineties as the KPN staff training centre, and at least the standard rooms never got an upgrade from a training centre overnight room to a decent 2017-compatible guest room. Still not bad, with some very good points but also weaker points, as long as for the proper price. Good: very helpful and effective staff (well except room maid, see later). Excellent 4-star bteakfast. Free shuttle to station (needs prebooking). Good restaurant for dinner too. Great location for a walk around the lake, or excursions into city centre. Rooms big enough, but spartanicly equipped: e.g. old TV, smallish bathroom with bad lighting, no coffee/tea making. Not so good: pool area needs a major overhaul. Lockers without keys, no pool towels, messy. Room main left dirty tea cup in the room instead of bringing it back to restaurant. Wifi was fast WHEN it worked but that was hardly longer than 2 minutes, after that ‘SSL problems’ on the notebook which mostly got resolved by disconnecting and connecting again. They have a desktop PC down in the hall for shared use, this might be needed as backup; did not use it.

“Comfortable Stay”

Was on a short business trip. Courteous staff, lovely grounds and loads of greenery all around. Room was clean and comfortable. The dining hall is well appointed & well spaced out. The grounds around have loads of walking space.

“A stopover”

We usually stay in the centre of Groningen. We thought this would be a good alternative as there are lots of walks from hotel for our dog. The area is really nice - woodlands and water. The hotel was ok - rooms are basic. Our bathroom was very nice but we were in an executive room. The food was disappointing. We had dinner in the evening as there were no restaurants nearby. Breakfast was just ok - not a great choice. The outdoor seating was really nice as the weather was so warm.

“Standard Room Disappointing”

A mediocre hotel on its best day. The Good: Overall, the staff we're all very pleasant, helpful, and competent. The beds are surprisingly very comfortable, far better than your average, low to mid level Dutch hotel. There’s a lovely lake with walking/cycling trails and natural areas which can easily keep you occupied for an afternoon on a pretty day. WiFi is quite fast and reliable. Room and facilities were mostly clean, but found plenty of dust in some neglected areas (television, radiator). The common areas (lobby, bar/restaurant and terraces) are quite comfortable and can easily handle larger groups of family and friends. The Mediocre: Dinner in the restaurant is adequate, but nothing special with a very limited menu. Breakfast leaves plenty to be desired - fine if it's included in your rate, but not worth paying for otherwise. The Bad: My room (4027) was quite outdated, tired, and poorly arranged with little closet/drawer space. The bathroom is terribly lit with only a single light above the sink. Even being just above the sink, it's still difficult for a shorter person to see well in the mirror for shaving, putting on makeup, etc. It’s downright dark in the shower and the water pressure quite weak. Toiletries are sparse (no lotions, face cloths) and what is provided in wall dispensers (hand soap, 2 in 1 shampoo) is more like what you’d find in public showers or gyms rather than a hotel room. Towels are thin and certainly of the budget variety. TV is outdated with limited channels. If you're on the Western wing of the hotel, expect your room to be absolutely blasted by the afternoon/evening sun, especially in spring and summer. Make sure to draw your curtains tight to keep your room from becoming an infrared oven. Conclusion: Fine for a night or two if traveling for business or as a stopover if the the price is right, but not much more. As striking as the exterior and lobby areas are, the accommodations are just the opposite with the exception of surprisingly comfortable beds.
