The most sustainable four-star hotel in the Netherlands

If you’re looking for a sustainable hotel in the middle of the countryside, then stop looking any further. Hampshire Boshotel – Overberg is the most sustainable four-star hotel in the Netherlands. It’s in a fantastic location on the edge of the forests named; Nationaal Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug and there are many walking and cycling routes in the area. After an active day in the countryside you can enjoy a delicious dinner in the stylish hotel restaurant, with its open kitchen and fantastic view of the forests.

Hampshire Boshotel – Overberg is on the border between the Provinces of Gelderland and Utrecht, in a peaceful, nature environment. It’s an attractive destination for all kinds of events, from a romantic weekend away for two to a business brainstorming session in the forest. For even more peace and relaxation, the hotel has various wellness facilities, such as a sauna, Turkish steam room, solarium and beauty centre. And if you’d like to take you dog with you, then that’s OK too!

Meet a roe deer or badger in the forest!

Meet a roe deer or badger in the forest!

From Hampshire Boshotel – Overberg you can just walk into the Nationaal Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The park runs from the Grebbeberg near Rhenen to the Gooimeer near Huizen and contains woods, heathland, sand drifts and grassland. It's very likely that you'll come across roe deer, foxes, badgers, rare pine martins and unique birds during your walk. Prefer the city? You'll reach Arnhem of Utrecht within a half hour drive. A few tips about the surroundings.

Kasteel Amerongen was built 700 years ago, commissioned by the brothers Henric and Diederic Borre. Today, the castle is a museum with its own collection of art and antiques. In the Militaire Luchtvaart Museum in Soesterberg there are interesting exhibitions about flying and aircraft throughout the year. Prefer trains? Then the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht is highly recommended. For a broader subject, namely the history of the Netherlands, you can visit the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem. The ''inhabitans'' of the museum will tell you special stories about daily life in days gone by.

All big theatre performances that tour the country appears on the stage at Theater De Lampegiet in Veenendaal. Check the programme and book your seat on time.

In the ZOO: Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen there is more possible than just looking at animals. Children can also take part in treasure hunts and experience adventures. Too cool off when the mercury reaches high summer temperatures, try the Henschotermeer natural swimming pool. At Pyramide van Austerlitz the children can play in the playground, bump into each other in bumper cars and take a turn on the carousel.

The Golfclub Anderstein golf course in Maarsbergen offers more than enough challenges. There are 27 holes to play on this beautiful course, situated partly in the Gelderse Vallei and partly on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

Enjoy delicious, organic dishes

Restaurant Boshotel Overberg
The serenity of the immediate surroundings of Hampshire Boshotel – Overberg is also found in the restaurant. From here you have a view of the forest. The open kitchen and crackling open fire also gives the restaurant a special ambiance. The kitchen has a French-Dutch orientation and only uses organic products, including those from the “green” butcher, Ton Molenaar in Amersfoort. You can visit the restaurant the whole day for breakfast, lunch or dinner or for a quick snack.

Brasserie De Holle Boom
Brasserie De Holle Boom is right next to the hotel. It’s highly recommended that you take a bite to eat here; the décor is truly unique. The brasserie is situated in a farm dating from 1886. And there’s a lot on offer: from an intimate à-la-carte dinner for two to a buffet or barbecue for a large group.

“Beautiful surroundings, okay experience”

We stayed five nights in this hotel. It’s supposed to be a four star hotel, but I would give it three stars, and that’s after taking into account the limitations that Covid has placed on the experience (mostly the fact that the sauna facilities were closed and breakfast and dinner was served in the hotelroom). The room was fine, clean and had all the necessary basics. The bed was a bit hard, but we slept fine on it. The staff was friendly, but the service was no more than average. You never get the feeling that their way of thinking is “how can we make the experience for our guests the best it can be”, which seems even more important during Covid limitations. For example, the quality of the food served in the evening was excellent, but there was only one vegetarian dish on the menu and everything was served with the same salad and fries. After a couple of nights you want something else! The breakfast was also of fine quality, but there’s not a lot of different things to choose from, so it feels like you’re having the same breakfast every day, especially if you eat vegetarian. Plus we found out the breakfast is not sustainable, and they didn’t tell us about this, we found out by accident! I think this is really not okay, because their main selling point is being completely sustainable, which is the reason I chose this hotel. I complained about it but got a lukewarm reaction. They also didn’t warn us that if it’s windy you have to close the wooden shutters outside the window, otherwise you’ll hear a loud whistling sound made by the wind. We had to find that out for ourselves and got one night of bad sleep because of it. All in all I would only recommend this hotel if you’re just staying one or two nights, or when the Covid limitations are lifted (so you can get the breakfast buffet in the morning and can eat out if you want to).

“Lovely stay near the forest”

Great stay in a lovely green location. Good breakfast, use of sauna and friendly staff. You can walk right into the forest. Rooms were not as sound proof as we hoped, and a small fridge would be a good addition. Overall we had a great stay and would recommend this hotel.

“Excellent modern hotel in a rustic environment”

Moden clean hotel, with bar and excellent restaurant in a very beautiful country location. Friendly staff and all English speakers. Opt for the breakfast as it includes a nice European twist with a wide choice of hot and cold meats, juices and hot drinks.
