Discover the many faces of Groningen and its surroundings.

Hampshire Hotel - City Groningen is the ideal base for a weekend exploring Groningen and its surroundings. It is located close to the central station, so easily accessible with all the city's hotspots nearby. You can hire a bicycle at the hotel and explore the city. Cycle through the centre with its historic warehouses, courtyards and buildings, past the Martini Tower towards the Grote Markt and see Groningen at its best.

The Groninger Museum is an absolute must. The museum has a wonderful collection of its own and also hosts special touring exhibitions. The building is an artwork in itself. It was designed by several well-known architects, including Allessandro Mendini.

There is also lots to see outside the city. You could go to Pieterburen, for example, to visit the seal nursery, or spend an afternoon walking on the tidal marshes. Back at the Hampshire Hotel - City Groningen, it's time to relax in the sauna followed by a lovely meal in one of the local restaurants.

The bicycle city of the Netherlands.

The city of Groningen has won numerous awards. Such as ‘Best City Centre’ and ‘Bicycle City of the Netherlands’. You can experience the latter at Hampshire Hotel - City Groningen by hiring a solid Johnny Loco bicycle and going exploring. Visit the historic buildings and pretty courtyards in the centre of Groningen or cycle into the lively night life on the Grote Markt and Poelestraat. What other activities are there?

A really fun museum is the Dutch Comics Museum (Nederlands Stripmuseum). Here you will meet comic book heroes like Suske en Wiske, Olivier B. Bommel and Jan, Jans en de kinderen The Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum is not only a wonderful building to look at, it also has an interesting collection about the history of shipping in the northern provinces of the Netherlands. At the Groninger Museum, the Museum Shop and Mendini Restaurant are worth a visit in their own right.

The city has a lot of wonderful architecture. The central station or Hoofdstation, for example, was designed by Isaac Gosschalk in 1896 In the centre, the Goudkantoor, a renaissance building dating from 1635, and the many historic warehouses on the Noorderhaven are also worth a visit. Examples of modern architecture in the city include the famous Gasunie building and the urinal by Rem Koolhaas.

Not far from the city is the village of Pieterburen. This is home to the world famous seal nursery founded by Lenie 't Hart who takes care of ill seals. The visitor centre has an exhibition and a film. And if you're in Pieterburen anyway, why not take the family walking on the tidal marshes?

By water
Groningen is surrounded by and connected to water. Take a boat tour and experience the city from another angle.

The Martini Tower on the Grote Markt is the city's showpiece. You can also climb the 96.8 metre high tower.

We can offer 3 possibilities. Our private hotel garage within walking distance can be reserved at the hotel for € 17,50 per night (based on availability), you can drive in and out multiple times. An alternative opposite the hotel is the garage from the Holland Casino, for € 22,50 (instead of  45, -) per  uninterrupted night if you buy the drive out ticket at the hotel. A more profitable alternative is a Park & Ride. At 4 of the 5 ‘P+R Parking Lots’ you only pay for the bus to the city centre. The hotel can give you more information and answer further questions.

“Nice city to visit”

We only stayed for one night in Groningen and found it an interesting and friendly city.As we were driving having a good car park is important to us and is high on the list of priorities. The hotels car park is away from the main building about 1/4 of a mile in a secure garage. The rooms in the hotel were a bit on the small side but fine for one night. We did not have breakfast so can't comment on it, but there was free coffee on the landing of each floor as well as in the rooms.

“Good hotel close to both hospital and city center”

Stayed here two nights on a work trip. Staff is friendly. Free coffee/tea in the each corridor. It was nice with the sauna and steam bath after a day of work, but you have to make a reservation for that. I had a double room, because they have single rooms of only 9 m^2. Good room with a nice bed and bathroom. However, the view from the room could have been better, since my room was in the basement. Excellent indonesian (java) restaurant and the casino is very closeby, just as the city center is.

“5* just because the breakfast welcome is great!”

Staying here for a few nights, I enjoyed the superior room. The room was super clean and comfortable and certainly exceeding a 3*rating. The option has a paid parking facility but at walking distance and not at the hotel itself. There is also a public paid parking just in front of the hotel. The hotel is located at walking distance of anything you'd like to do. The staff is very professional and welcoming and I was impressed by the warm welcome at breakfast.. Finally an hotel that cares about their guest in the morning as well! Stay was great. All expectations met. That's why you deserve the max. Thank you!

“Groningen ... Bike City”

Groningen, located approximately 2 hrs north of Amsterdam, is a fantastic city filled with bicycles and scooters buzzing about. Walking or riding a bike is the prefered mode of transportation for the locals, and fun for visiters as well. The Hampshire City Hotel is located in the heart of the city, only a block or so from the main plaza, walking there was an easy 5 minute walk. The Hampshire Hotel is a very nice property, well appointed, with an exceptional staff. The hotel can provide you with an umbrella if it looks like rain, and they also have bicycles for rent, so you can explore the area. The city center plaza has a beautiful church, and has a magnificent clock tower with bells that ring a lovely tune, reminding us of the time. It is bustling with people shopping, eating, drinking, and site seeing. There are many resturants in the area that serve fantastic food and libations. Closer to the Hampshire Hotel, there are also many fine dining choices, where I enjoyed some of the best meals ever. I would recommend the Hampshire City Hotel to anyone traveling to Groningen. The breakfast at the hotel I would also recomend, with fresh fruit, coffee & juice, an assortment of meat and cheeses, crescents , rolls, and eggs. Again, the staff was very helpful... special kudos to one particular staff member, Lucas. He was very personable, and very helpful with local events and attractions during my stay. Thanks to all !! This made my stay at the Hampshire most enjoyable. DH

“Near Holland casino”

Hi, I stayed in Hampshire Hotel - City Groningen in the beginning of September 2016, traveled on business here is my impression of the property. 1/ Check-in - no problem, swift , efficient, no mistakes. Pricing is OK and they always have some special offers and promos, check the official site. Check-out - with a certain glitch : a reception staff lost my payment receipt details, it took 15 min to sort t it out and the impression was spoiled , of course 2/ Rooms are small, as all the previous posters truly mentioned. The exact size is 21-22 sq.m. Very limited pace room for luggage. Mine was on the underground level with zero view and zero sunlight. TV on the wall, safe book. No fridge. Tea/ coffee making facilities are in the corridor, coffee machine is also publicly available... 3/ Room decor, furnishing, bedding etc, all fine, not very stylish, but functional. Cleanness of the room and a bathroom is spot on. 4/ Bathroom with shower cubicle and vanity counter is OK ( metallic sink...LOL), no amenities provided in the room (bathrobes, slippers, shampoo, shower gel, body lotion, soap - nothing - do not forget to bring your own). If you NEED smth you are welcome to ask at the reception. Towels are in plenty, all crispy clean and changed daily. 5/ Breakfast. A WONDERFUL spread for the fruitful start of the day - a selection of cereal (4 choices + 3 muesli), cold cuts, veggies, fruit ( fresh raspberry juice!!!!WOW), pancakes, and of selections of Dutch cheeses. Three or four choices of hot dishes, yogurt ( homemade two choices). Tea or coffee - help yourself. 6 / Internet access is (Wifi) free in all rooms and areas of the hotel, passwords are provided o reception upon check-in. 7/ The area around the hotel is the best part.... Holland Casino is a short stroll from the hotel front door, lots of restaurants nearby and two food supermarkets. Grotte Markt is 5 min walk. Train station is 10-12 min walk. 8/ If you have any question I`ll be happy to answer. Schonefeld
