The bicycle city of the Netherlands.

The city of Groningen has won numerous awards. Such as ‘Best City Centre’ and ‘Bicycle City of the Netherlands’. You can experience the latter at Hampshire Hotel - City Groningen by hiring a solid Johnny Loco bicycle and going exploring. Visit the historic buildings and pretty courtyards in the centre of Groningen or cycle into the lively night life on the Grote Markt and Poelestraat. What other activities are there?

A really fun museum is the Dutch Comics Museum (Nederlands Stripmuseum). Here you will meet comic book heroes like Suske en Wiske, Olivier B. Bommel and Jan, Jans en de kinderen The Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum is not only a wonderful building to look at, it also has an interesting collection about the history of shipping in the northern provinces of the Netherlands. At the Groninger Museum, the Museum Shop and Mendini Restaurant are worth a visit in their own right.

The city has a lot of wonderful architecture. The central station or Hoofdstation, for example, was designed by Isaac Gosschalk in 1896 In the centre, the Goudkantoor, a renaissance building dating from 1635, and the many historic warehouses on the Noorderhaven are also worth a visit. Examples of modern architecture in the city include the famous Gasunie building and the urinal by Rem Koolhaas.

Not far from the city is the village of Pieterburen. This is home to the world famous seal nursery founded by Lenie 't Hart who takes care of ill seals. The visitor centre has an exhibition and a film. And if you're in Pieterburen anyway, why not take the family walking on the tidal marshes?

By water
Groningen is surrounded by and connected to water. Take a boat tour and experience the city from another angle.

The Martini Tower on the Grote Markt is the city's showpiece. You can also climb the 96.8 metre high tower.

“Hotel is ok for one night, while Groningen is such a beautiful town”

Pro: Reception is very helpful. Location is within 15-20 minutes walking distance (with luggage) from Groningen Central Station. About 10 minutes to Grote Market and town centre. Groningen is really a very beautiful Dutch town with very friendly people. Con: Just a basic hotel. Water pressure for shower is low and not enough lighting in the room at night.

Good morning and thank you for writing this review. I am glad you enjoyed the city of Groningen and our staff could be of service to you. I am sorry that the water pressure seemed low, our hotel has a Green Key and this is one of the requirements. We also appreciate your feedback about the lighting in the room, thank you. Have a great day and we hope to welcome you again someday! Best regards, Alex Kaminski - Hotel Manager

“Location is excellent; standard room good for business travel”

My stay at the Hampshire hotel was good. The rooms are clean, the location is convenient, and the breakfast is substantial. I would say that the bar traffic in front of the hotel over the weekend can be a bit loud (my room faced the street) and the room doors are not soundproof at all. Definitely can hear all conversations in the hallway. Things to note are that the standard rooms are a little tight (if you're used to USA-sized rooms the Hampshire feels particularly cramped). It was also a tad strange that I had 2 twin beds pushed together, but the bedding was also for 2 twins (rather than making the bed as a queen). Super thankful that the bathroom counter existed (ladies with makeup bags, you're covered!), but the sink was basically in the bathtub, so maneuvering was a bit of a challenge. Again, it's Europe so these notes are mainly FYIs for folks not used to smaller quarters. If you have two large bags, you'd probably be uncomfortable since there wasn't a great place to put one suitcase, let alone two.

Dear Kait414, Thank you for sharing your review about our hotel. Your opinion is very important to us. We will definitely see what we can do about our "soundproof" doors. If you book a room with a kingsize bed you will get one blanket and if a twin room is booked, you indeed get a room with two separate bedsheets; you can always let us know your preference. When the room numbers are being assigned on the day of arrival, we will first look at all preferences and fulfil them when possible. We are looking forward to seeing your again in Groningen. “Hampshire Hotel - City Groningen”

OK hotel for price/.performance, some minor deficiencies: insufficient illumination of entrance and wardrobe. Slow elevator. Coffee machine not in the room but outside near the elevator. Very friendly employees, great service. Breakfast is ok, but not up to the amount level asked (16 euro). Quiet rooms.

“In the City centre”

Conveniently located in the city centre, this hotel is perfect for exploring the city of Groningen by foot. It is only a 15 minute walk from Groningen Central Station. Staff at the reception desk was very warm and welcoming. Rooms were relatively small and a bit businessly decorated...

“Great experience!”

Overall, the Hampshire Hotel provided a great experience. Their hospitality is fantastic (especially Janine at the front desk) and they have a clean, well designed hotel. The rooms aren't anything special, but the beds are comfy, bathrooms are rather large for what I was expected and the wifi works well (key for an international traveler like myself!). Location is 5-10 minute walk from city center and right on a main street near many restaurants. Breakfast was also just fine with an assortment of breads, croissants, meats/cheese, yogurt and fruit. Also, free coffee and tea on each floor.
