If you're looking for art, culture and amusement for the whole family, there is more than enough choice in Sittard and its surrounding area. A few tips:
Art & culture
Museum Het Domein has a great mix of contemporary art, urban history and archaeology. The museum is located in a 19th-century, former municipal school in the historic centre of Sittard. Fans of knights and castles are easy to please in Limburg. There is Hoensbroek Castle in Zuid-Limburg, one of the biggest and most beautiful castles in the country. You can explore more than 40 rooms in the castle and relive the days of damsels and knights. For young and old, with children or without, this castle has lots to experience. Another attraction is the Velvet Cave in Valkenburg aan de Geul, one of the oldest catacombs of Zuid-Limburg. In the castle ruins above the Velvet Cave, you can wander endlessly from the great hall to the defensive towers, from the dungeons to the former chapel and from the artillery room to the underground escape tunnels.
Walking & cycling
There is a lot of natural beauty around Sittard that is quite easy to access, such as Sittard Noord recreation area, Windraak and Limbrichterbos scenic areas. There is plenty of choice in terms of picturesque walking and cycling routes. For instance, you can walk from Roosteren to Sittard station, following a 19-kilometre-long route.
Kasteelpark Born is a zoo located in the gardens of the former Born Castle. This park is home to deer, predators, hedgehogs, tortoises and monkeys and there is a giant playground in the middle of the park where kids can really go wild. Kinderstad in Heerlen has lots of attractions to entertain children for a few hours: bumper cars, merry-go-rounds, slides, a climbing castle, a climbing volcano, a bouncy castle, trampolines, pedal boats and rapids.
