Historic city centre of Groningen

Hampshire hotel – Groningen Centre is on the edge of the historic city centre of Groningen. Just a stone’s throw away you will find a host of interesting, fun and attractive things to do. You can shop till you drop, enjoy café terraces and wander through the university city. Other suggestions for a day in Groningen and surroundings:

It can’t go unmentioned: the Groninger Museum. Be surprised by the special exhibitions and impressive art collection. In Brugstraat there are two historic buildings from the fifteenth century: the Gotische Huis and the Canterhuis. These buildings are the home of the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum, where the history of shipping from the Middle Ages comes to life. To meet your comic strip heroes, you can visit Het Nederlands Stripmuseum Groningen; from Donald Duck to Jan, Jans en de Kinderen; they are all there.

Places of interest
If you walk up the steps of the 97-metre-high Martinitoren, you are rewarded with a beautiful view across the city, and with good weather even across the whole province. The city also has some thirty almshouses, the courtyards of every one being an oasis of peace. The former monastery Prinsenhof is an impressive complex situated in the Martinikerkhof. At the rear is the Prinsentuin, a beautiful renaissance garden full of roses and herbs.

In Familiepark Nienoord near castle Nienoord children can play in the playground, or take a ride on a horse, tractor or scooter. Another fun amusement park for the kids is Sprookjeshof in Zuidlaren. It has a playground, children’s farm, gnome-themed clamber castle and a covered section, so it’s also a great day out if the weather’s poor.

The province of Groningen offers stunning cycle trips. A beautiful trip is the Hoogeland discovery route (20 kilometres) through North Groningen. The trip to Hoornse Plas is also beautiful. The hotel has bicycles for hire.

“Decent hotel with friendly staff”

After experiencing almost hundred of business hotels across Europe, I can say that this one doesn't disappoint and in some ways, had pleasant surprises too. The staff is super friendly and know their city well. They've a 24hr availability of hot drinks (coffee, tea) and a great sunlit lobby. The rooms are excellent, at times beating some of the better starred hotels in terms of comfort of the bed and cleanliness. Where it fails, as with many hotels these days, is that not even a small bottle of water is made available, even upon first check-in. The hotel room charges aren't that cheap, so providing water shouldn't be a problem. Also, the breakfast price of €15 and the tourist tax (only revealed in the bill) are pretty high. Both of these need to be made transparent regardless of which booking website you're using- not after booking.

“Apartment - Excellent physical facilities but lacking in important things”

I’ve been staying in the 2 room, 2 person apartment at the Hampshire for a bit over two weeks and wanted to write a review before the small annoying things clouded my judgement on the big, nice ones. IMO, there are few things that are OK about this place – they are either very nice or extremely annoying. The physical apartment is extraordinary. It is small but two people can comfortably spend extended time here. It seems to have been very recently updated because things seem nearly new. The kitchen is terrific with an induction stove (4 burner) oven/microwave, coffee maker, dishwasher, and plenty of pots, pans, dishes, utensils, etc. There is a washing machine in the bathroom that works great. Fitness center in the main hotel is small but excellent for a simple daily fitness routine. Last any possibly best – the view from the living room and balcony (with table and 2 chairs) is just wonderful. With this many positive points, what could be wrong? The first and maybe main problem is that the folks at the front desk are very nice but can’t or won’t help. Their response to anything is “I’ll write that down” but nothing happens so writing it down and doing something are two different concepts here. Anyway, here are the things that I have asked them to address and finally gave up: 1) The internet signal that you are supposed to use (the one with the strongest signal) is VERY unstable and only give you internet access randomly and occasionally. After several tries, I could not even find one person at the front desk who understood I was connected to the server but no internet access – they kept telling me the password. Finally decided to use my cell phone as a hotspot and pay for it when I get home but this just isn’t right. 2) When I got here there was shampoo and body lotion in the bathroom but no shower gel. Answer at the front desk was “That is an apartment and you should buy it for yourself at the supermarket.” Really? 3) There is one set of keys to the apartment so my wife and I must coordinate when I want to get into the apartment after work. These are just ordinary keys that you could get duplicates at any hardware store in the US for a couple of $ each. How hard would it be for them to do this? You get the idea – there are just a half dozen little things that are easily fixable to make this place a 5+. Every day you have to deal with no internet and having you wife leave where she is so let you in the apartment drops you opinion of the place. Right now, I’m not sure I would stay here again just because for €110+ a night, I just think soap, keys, and stable internet access should be a given. Two final comments that I don’t think are deal breakers but might be a consideration for some. First, these apartments are in a separate building from the main hotel so there is no control over things like noise. While I’ve been here (April 2017), it is quite quiet during the week but on weekends and holidays, things are noisy off and on until 4 or 5 AM. Second, there is no phone. The fact that I would need to make an international call from my cell phone to call the front desk – and would have to look that number up in an emergency – just bothers me on some level.

“Basic but comfortable apartment”

We stayed in the apartment for 6 people and it was comfortable but a little on the basic side. There is only one bathroom, but it has both a bath and a shower. The apartment was perfectly adequately furnished but an iron and ironing board were missing. When we first asked about this one of the receptionists told us this was normal and that we could bring our ironing across the road to use the ironing facilities there! When we asked a second and more helpful receptionist they arranged for an iron and an ironing board to be brought to the apartment for us. We had the hotel breakfast which was good value and had an adequate choice of food. However, one of the days we had breakfast was a Sunday and it was incredibly busy. There was only one lady working to make the breakfast with one assistant. They were trying very hard to keep up with demand but we could see they needed help. Overall, a friendly and comfortable hotel/apartment in a very good location for visiting the city.
