Historic city centre of Groningen

Hampshire hotel – Groningen Centre is on the edge of the historic city centre of Groningen. Just a stone’s throw away you will find a host of interesting, fun and attractive things to do. You can shop till you drop, enjoy café terraces and wander through the university city. Other suggestions for a day in Groningen and surroundings:

Museums
It can’t go unmentioned: the Groninger Museum. Be surprised by the special exhibitions and impressive art collection. In Brugstraat there are two historic buildings from the fifteenth century: the Gotische Huis and the Canterhuis. These buildings are the home of the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum, where the history of shipping from the Middle Ages comes to life. To meet your comic strip heroes, you can visit Het Nederlands Stripmuseum Groningen; from Donald Duck to Jan, Jans en de Kinderen; they are all there.

Places of interest
If you walk up the steps of the 97-metre-high Martinitoren, you are rewarded with a beautiful view across the city, and with good weather even across the whole province. The city also has some thirty almshouses, the courtyards of every one being an oasis of peace. The former monastery Prinsenhof is an impressive complex situated in the Martinikerkhof. At the rear is the Prinsentuin, a beautiful renaissance garden full of roses and herbs.

Children
In Familiepark Nienoord near castle Nienoord children can play in the playground, or take a ride on a horse, tractor or scooter. Another fun amusement park for the kids is Sprookjeshof in Zuidlaren. It has a playground, children’s farm, gnome-themed clamber castle and a covered section, so it’s also a great day out if the weather’s poor.

Cycling
The province of Groningen offers stunning cycle trips. A beautiful trip is the Hoogeland discovery route (20 kilometres) through North Groningen. The trip to Hoornse Plas is also beautiful. The hotel has bicycles for hire.

Cosy Grand Café

Grand Café
The stylish Grand Café in Hampshire Hotel – Groningen Centre offers you an extensive international breakfast buffet every morning. Crusty rolls, freshly pressed juices, freshly laid boiled eggs and a cup of coffee or tea for a great start to your day. The Grand Café is also open all day for a free cup of coffee or tea. Prefer a slow start? In the adjacent library you can retire for a while with a newspaper or book.

“Rusty Rally”

City centre but no noise. Window opens out into a wall. Breakfast was excellent - beds were single. Parking was difficult as the road outside was closed due to a fire . Located in the heart of a happening city. Full of energy

“Taking daughter to school ”

Well hotel has the lobby and grounds to die for. Nice view all around and very centrally located. Issues are that the intercom sometimes didn't work and air conditioning goes off at 11pm. Overall nice hotel

“Nice place”

The hotel was nice, the location was great, just outside the city center and with a parking lot in the basement. The bathroom was a little cheap with the show having a plastic floor. Breakfast was a could have been improved a bit, no ketchup and sausages were linked to each other. Some of the chairs in the breakfast area did not have a protection pad and chair legs which made them make an unpleasant sound when the chairs were moved back and forward.

“Quiet and nice hotel in great location”

Came here for a small conference. Nice staff, simple but functioning rooms, good atmosphere. When you are out of the main door, you are by a canal, very close to whatever the city has to offer. I am happy to come back. Good breakfast.

“Good location, professional staff”

Modern building, not particularly attractive from outside but nice inside. Lovely big room with good views of canals and city. Good location with most things within walking distance. Private garage parking available (17 euros per day) but very much needed as street parking is limited and costly. Friendly, professional staff. Tea and coffee in bar available at all times and a good breakfast. No air-con so windows open making it a touch noisy on Saturday night with the revellers returning in the early hours but not too much of a problem. Recommended.
