A trip back to Roman times

Hampshire Hotel - Holthurnsche Hof is in the middle of Rijk van Nijmegen, one of the Netherland’s greenest regions. The area’s rich history goes way back to Roman times, which can be seen from the countless monuments. And the countryside is breathtaking. On one hand there’s the riverside scenery between the Maas and Waal rivers in the Ooijpolder and Duffelt nature reserves. On the other, the hills and dales concealing Beek-Ubbergen, Berg en Dal, Groesbeek and Mook.

Try at least one of the eleven walks in the Ooijpolder and Duffelt nature reserves, past curious cows, castles and old windmills. There’s also great walking and cycling through the riparian area and grasslands in the Millingerwaard nature reserve in the heart of the Gelderse Poort, with the Millinger Theetuin making an excellent stop for high-tea or lunch.

Discover the riches of African art and culture in the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal. The past comes to life in the National Liberation Museum 1994-1945. Experience the run-up to the war and the occupation and celebrate the liberation.

A day in the Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen is a true adventure. Walk along with Bamboo Bill or one of the other park adventurers and get to know everything about the animals. Tivoli Amusement Park is a theme park in Berg en Dal with around twenty attractions. Take a trip on the roller coaster, get the creeps in the haunted house, or take a spin on the carousel.

Challenge yourself on the Rijk van Nijmegen golf course. The sloping course provides stunning views in the middle of the countryside and has no fewer than 45 holes.

Sauna & Beauty de Thermen Nijmegen is a spacious sauna and thermal bath complex for ultimate relaxation.

When traveling with dogs, hotels afternoon do not offer the best rooms. This hotel, I would say, the opposite. We had a suite (102) and from the room we could access a big field which connected to a large Forrest. The room was large and where some reviewers complain about the lack of furniture, we very much enjoyed the space of the room. The beds were very comfortable and the shower very pleasant. Breakfast has a good variety of food and the staff is very professional. Only (minor) remark is that the espresso is just a small coffee and could be a bit stronger. In general the staff is very helpful and friendly. The hotel is very well prepared for having dogs in the room. The walking route from the hotel is recommendable, even though some of the markers of the route could not be found. All in all our favourite hotel (at least at this moment) in NL. Highly recommendable for dog owners.

“Business trip to Nijmegen”

I really loved this hotel. Set in wood like surrounding I felt far enough away from the crowds bu close enough for access to the town. Friendly, excellent service from all staff I will definitely stay here again when on business or leisure trips. The food was top class.

“Organizing training?”

Training rooms with a view to the beautiful surroundings. Spacious in the new building or smaller but classy in the old villa. Co-operative staff. Lunch buffet style for all tastes. Trainees love their spacious bed rooms.

“Good, not very good ... watch out for room 222 !”

We stayed in this hotel before and rated it as "very good" and that's why we came back. Alas, our room 222 was below the usual standard. It was cold when we arrived at 10 pm. It has "shine-through" curtains whereas the hall opposite to our window was in full lights all night so we did not sleep so well. The bathroom has a little doorstep that was practically invisible, result: we stumbled several times and my husband injured his hand doing so. The towels were not as soft as we were used to: no fabric softener in the budget any more? We were glad the breakfast was as sumptuous and delicious as usual and the staff still very friendly, otherwise our rating would not have been above "average". It's a pity the management has not contacted us (we left this comment at the desk and were promised they would do so), otherwise this review would not have been written ...

Unfortunately your note didn't reach me, otherwise I would surely contact you and thank you for your remarks. The problem with the light from the opposite corridor will be solved. We are very sorry for all the inconvenience caused, especially the fact that your husband injured his hand. We hope to welcome you back in the future. I will certainly make sure that your next stay will be more than convenient. If you like to speak to me in person, Do not hesitate contacting me. With kindest regards, Peter Vos

“Great hotel with big suite rooms”

We staid here just for a night while visiting the nearby Groesbeek winefest. The hotel is excellent, modern with large suites. We had a room on the ground floor with an outside terras facing first a big lawn and then the forrest. This is the wine area of the Netherlands (yes, we have one too!). The hotel is located in this leasurly undulating landscape with vineyards, and lots of history from roman digs to the canadian war cemetry. Tip; rent a bike, they have normal bikes and electrical bikes, which with the hills might be better. Do book the bike ahead of time, because when we arrived they were not available. Restaurant: the restaurant has a large outside roof terrace, with a great view. Good food and a good selection of wine and beers. Excellent breakfast, with lots of different types of bread, juice, coffee, bacon, eggs and everything else you would expect. And it came included in the price of our room
