Lovely walks and fantastic cycle routes

Zeeland, and the island of Schouwen-Duiveland in particular, is the ideal destination to enjoy a long weekend walking and cycling. There are beautiful nature areas near the hotel, like Krekengebied Ouwerkerk, the woods of Schuddebeurs and the Prunje, the oldest polder of Schouwen-Duiveland. Lovely cycle routes include the Caisson route and the FIKS Theme route “Victory over the water”. More tips:

One of the showpieces of the Stadhuismuseum in Zierikzee is the Darinkdelven panel dating from 1540, showing salt extraction in medieval times. Here, silver works, old maps and paintings enable you to delve into the history of Zierikzee. In the centre of Burgh is a classic school building dating from 1843. In this building, you will find museum De Burghse Schoole with an authentic classroom from 1920, including wooden benches, slates and chalk. It all started at the Blikmuseum De Blikvanger in Renesse with one tin, found in the rubbish. The collection now comprises over four thousand tins.

The Zeeuwse Rozentuin near the village of Kats is a beautiful landscape garden featuring thousand types of roses and hundred different clematis. In order to optimally enjoy the Eastern Scheldt and spot harbour porpoises tot he fullest, you can take a trip on the sailing ship Scaldis. For birdwatchers a must-see: don't miss the rich bird habitat of Plan Tureluur along the south coast of Schouwen-Duiveland.

Two fabulous 18-hole golf courses are less than a 30 minute drive from the hotel: Golf club Grevelingenhout at Bruinisse and golf club De Goese Golf.

In Deltapark Neeltje Jans, you can spend a day enjoying sea animals and stormy attractions and learn more about the delta works. If you really want to thrill the kids, visit Prince Helicopters heliport for a helicopter flight. Get your boots on and step into the mud at the two nature reserves of Dijkwater and Tureluur. Excursions are regularly organised in these beautiful nature areas, visited by many coastal birds.

Cooking with top products from Zeeland

Restaurant Hampshire Hotel - Hostellerie Schuddebeurs
For over twelve years, chef Bart de Bree has headed his ambitious kitchen team. He knows exactly what he wants. Bart de Bree: “A good meal starts with a product of exquisite quality. We apply a high quality norm and impose strict standards on the products. For example, they should preferably be Dutch products. And many of the dishes on the menu come from Zeeland.”
Bart's creations using Eastern Scheldt lobster are legendary. In the season, you can try the most delicious dishes featuring this lobster in a starring role. You can order à la carte or choose one of the set menus, with or without wine suggestions. If the weather is fine, you can enjoy lunch or dinner on the bustling terrace surrounded by nature.

“Comfortable and relaxinf”

Stopped here for one night organised by bike tour company. The check in experience was lovely; the host took us up to our room and clearly explained the area. There was a fridge and tea/coffee facilities in the room. Unfortunately there was no air conditioning and only a small fan so the room was hot. It would’ve been nice to have some cold water in the fridge for this reason. Some staff were very helpful and polite, others were less so - when we asked for cold water the waiter was quite rude and took our bottles and filled them in front of us from the tap. Breakfast was fine - cereals, yoghurt, fresh fruit, juice, tea, coffee, bacon, eggs, bread, cold meats and cheese. However very limited selection for vegetarians and vegans. The other guests were from an older demographic, we in our 30s were by far the youngest there. The hotel is in a beautiful location however very remote. It’s a 15 minute cycle to the nearest town (Zierikzee) which was well worth a visit. Lunch and dinner menu looked lovely but expensive and again very few options for vegetarians.

“Great location in the country”

We were part of a group staying here. The food was very good. The service was excellent! The staff here are very attentive. We really enjoyed our room which had a view to the back gardens and other separate buildings where there were other guests. The room was small but was very cozy. It had a picture window that was hinged in the middle so there was lots of air flow and fresh air available. With quiet and the trees outside our window it was like sleeping at a cottage.

“The cook, the restaurant and a hotel”

We were fortunate to discover this location in the middle of Schouwen-Duiveland near Zierikzee. Family members have visited this location already a couple of times and convinced us to have a family reunion. We came in early on a cold chilly day (-5° C) and were welcomed by the lady of the house. We were directed to our suite, which is in another building, back in the garden. Bummer! The building has not the same charming look & feel as the main building. It's the kind of bungalow buildings from the 70's. Nevertheless we entered a spacious suite with bedroom, bathroom and very large living with a view on the garden and a terras. Privacy is OK although not 100%. The interior was descent but outdated and could use an extreme make over, unless you want a vintage experience. Unfortunately we had a cold room. Personnel was kind to point out that they had some issues and did everything to increase the heat. Too little too late! Our late afternoon was "refreshing". The other family guests came in later and experienced the same chilling experience. But we came for a nice dinner and boy oh boy we were satisfied with with we saw on the dishes, what we tasted and what we drunk. A culinary masterpiece with lobster as the main dish. Delicious, light with good wines om the wine chart and charming personnel. So overall, I think we got a little bit unlucky with room, but it didn't spoil our stay. Worth visiting when in the neighbourhood and excellent location to visit Zierikzee which is a lovely Dutch town.

“We couldn't have chosen a better place”

We were looking for a relaxing and romantic week end away in Netherlands and we couldn't have chosen a better place!! The Hostellerie is placed in a very picturesque small village - I would advise a walk around in the morning, as it's really cute (and small). It is about 20 minutes from the beach and 40 minutes from Middelburg. it is in the middle of beautiful nowhere dutch countryside. The Hostellerie is very traditional, clean, and beautiful, hidden in a fantastic garden. The service is great, with the maitre and sous-maitre being excellent. They are friendly, super knowledgeable and very attentive. We arrived a bit late, but they still offered us a great fish salad. The dinner the night after was stunning (thanks Chef!) and their wine list is pure quality. I would definitely recommend it!
