Art and culture in Utrecht

Hampshire Hotel - Malie Hotel Utrecht is the ideal base for discovering the cultural treasures of the city of Utrecht. The municipal theatre, Stadsschouwburg Utrecht, is just a seven-minute walk away and there are a number of museums and cultural attractions that are easy to reach on foot or by public transport. A few tips:

Art and culture

The world-famous Rietveld Schröderhuis that belonged to furniture-maker and architect Gerrit Rietveld. This house/museum dates from 1924 and was built completely in line with the principles of the ‘De Stijl’ art movement. Other interesting museums in the city include Museum Speelklok – with its fascinating collection of musical instruments – and the Central Museum, where you can view the world’s largest collection of Rietveld objects.

In the Railway Museum – Het Spoorwegmuseum – at Maliebaan Station, children can ride on the children’s train, take a dream trip on the Orient Express and enjoy an exciting tour along life-sized locomotives. The Dick Bruna House is located opposite the Central Museum. This is where the world-famous Dick Bruna characters come to life: Boris the bear, Snuffy and Miffie. In the Dom Tower on Domplein, there are special guided tours for children. A cruise through Utrecht’s canals is a great day out for all the family.

Close to the hotel, and right in the heart of the Maliekwartier neighbourhood, you can find the best shopping streets in Utrecht: Nachtegaalstraat and Burgemeester Reigerstraat. Besides trendy and stylish fashion shops, you can also find great antique shops, surprising gift shops and interesting bookshops.

Walk through the lively city centre past the 600 year-old Dom Tower, the Oudegracht and Nieuwegracht canals, along the many almshouses and squares and through lovely parks such as Wilhelminapark. Would you prefer to leave the city and spend some time close to nature? Then, a walk through the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug is highly recommended.

“Very nice hotel”

This hotel looks small but it is not, it is cosy, charm and within walking distance from main sites. The area is nice and safe. Bedroom was big one on the first floor and quiet despite of looking to the street. Bed was big and ver confortable. Bathroom was clean and nice, a bit dark but enough light. Staff was nice and helpful. Around the reception there is a small bar (five big chairs?) where one can have the last drink at night and confortable armchairs to read at any time. WiFi was ok. Parking can be a problem.

“Nice cosy rooms”

Hotel in nice and quiet area, internet available in small but nice and warm rooms with an option to open windows and enjoy quiet night. Breakfast basic but good nothing to really complain about. Close by to parks so good option for nice run in the morning.

“Nice, clean hotel w/ friendly staff”

Nice clean hotel with well furnished rooms. Got everything you need, even TV stations in most languages. Very friendly and helpful staff. Walls are a bit thin, therefore only 4 out of 5. Will definitely come back. 10 mins walk to the Utrecht city center - optimally placed to enjoy the city.

“Probably the best in Utrecht”

I don't know why this is rated only 13 of 19 in Utrecht. The location is superb, a quit leafy suburb, but only 7 mins on a bike to the old town. The welcome is friendly and professional. My room was labelled Superior with a balcony. It was indeed very comfortable and with a good size balcony overlooking a garden. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom good too. The only thing missing, was a proper wardrobe. Had I been staying for a week, this would have been a problem. The bike hire is great too. The breakfast is superb (hot and cold buffet), with a real orange pressing machine and very good coffee. The lemon marmalade is wonderful. If I ever return to Utrecht, this hotel will be my only choice.
