Remarkable hotel on Hoornse Meer

For everyone who enjoys a weekend of walking and cycling, Hampshire Hotel – Plaza Groningen is ideal. This hotel with its remarkable exterior is situated in beautiful surroundings on Hoornse Meer. You can then settle down feeling fresh for a special culinary dinner in restaurant Culinas.

The inner city of Groningen with all its entertainment and culture is within easy reach of Hampshire Hotel - Plaza Groningen. The centre is just a few kilometres’ drive from the hotel. Just wandering through the cultural capital city of the North, you come across countless places of interest. High points are the Martinitoren, the Martinikerk, the Groninger Museum, the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum and the Prinsentuin. You certainly shouldn’t miss the attractive shopping streets, café terraces, cafés and restaurants in this lively student city.

Situated in a nature reserve and close to the city

All you have to do is step outside the hotel and you are in the middle of the beautiful nature reserve around Hoornse Meer. Paterwoldsemeer is also close-by, which means there’s more than enough choice for an energetic walk or cycle trip. The centre of Groningen is easy to reach by public transport and car. In short, more than enough to see, do and experience.

If you take the train to the city, you can’t miss the imposing Groninger Museum building. Come and see it from the inside too! There are continuously interesting exhibitions, and the fixed collection is impressive. Cheerful museums are the Nederlands Stripmuseum Groningen with all its comic strip heroes and Muzeeaquarium in Delftzijl with aquariums full of fish, crustaceans and molluscs.
History Historical heritage can be found everywhere. Highlights in the city centre include the Martinitoren, the Hoofdstation, the Goudkantoor and the Prinsenhof. Some 16 of the province’s original 180 stately homes remain. The most well-known four, Fraeylemaborg, Menkemaborg, Landgoed Nienoord and Verhildersum, are open to the public.

In the covered Apekooi (monkey cage) playground children can, you’ve guessed it already, climb and clamber like small monkeys. They are allowed on bare feet in ’t Blôde Fuottenpaad in Opende.

Each August you can enjoy the Indian Summer during the Festival Noorderzon. For ten days there are numerous shows and (theatre) performances both in the fairy-tale Noorderplantsoen and in the city centre. On the last Saturday in August, the ZomerJazzFietsTour starts. A unique combination of a cycle trip through the Reltdiepdal and jazz concerts in Mediaeval churches and farm sheds.

Enjoy culinary delights and a convivial drink

Restaurant Meerwold
One glance at the menu says it all: this is cooking at the highest level. A terrine of smoked salmon with La Ratte potatoes and saffron mayonnaise, beef carpaccio with truffle tapanade, Reypenaer VSOP fries and fennel crudités; the choice is yours. The Head Chef works with local quality produce as much as possible, such as the Zuidlaardermeer eel. He is continually developing new dishes, which means the menu also changes regularly. Restaurant Culinas is open seven days a week from 7.00 am to 9.00 pm.

Enjoyed a delicious dinner in Restaurant Meerwold but still fancy a last drink? Or maybe its time for early evening drinks? For a delicious drink you can visit the stylish hotelbar. When the weather's fine, you can enjoy sitting outside on the terrace.

“A nice week at the Hampshire”

Very nice Hotel in a nice and easy place to get to. The room was very good but, for me the bed was too hard and well worn and talking about well worn the excellent bathroom was let down by the pathetic towels, they really were bad. The breakfast was excellent and very high quality, the evening meals too were very good and the draught Heiniken was excellent. I would return if need be. One strange thing was the room rate, I stayed for 9 nights and they charged 9 different rates, ranging from 60 euro to 160 euro for the same person in the same room, very strange and not easy to reconcile on expenses.

“Very Good Value”

Very good value for the money. Restaurant was excellent. Rooms nice. Staff friendly and helpful. We had twin beds. One was very soft and the other very firm. Good location on a canal with walking path. About a 40 minute walk to town.

“Nice hotel, located in unique area of outstanding natural beauty and still on a comfortable distant of city centre.”

Modern, clean and nicely located hotel. Rooms are complete but not very spacious. The restaurant on the other hand is something you could expect in a 5 star hotel. Super food and pleasant service. Breakfast was outstanding in a very calm and relaxed atmosphere. Must stay if you want to visit the Groninger Museum or the old city center. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus to those destinations. We will come back..

“Visting Groningen our second best (couintryside) city after Maastricht”

We booked the Hampshare Plaza hotel, because they are ideallyu situated at the border of the (student) city of Groningen.and quite close to the Germanborder. It is only 20 minutes by Car. Groningen has loyts of fine restaurant and bars, the atmosphere is just great. The hotel is absolutely surprising. On arrtiavl staff is welcoming you with open arms. Most people are locals and locals in the North of Holland are great people. Our room was fine, bed excellent, nice bathroom, internet, wifi everything available. We didn't miss a thing. In two words: Most advicable..
